April Fools' Alert #13: 3D, physics-based Tetris on WiiWare
The problem with all of these April Fools' shenanigans is that some of the fake games, peripherals and features people dream up are actually quite awesome. Case in point is this first-of-April report on the WiiWare version of Tetris which, according to a conveniently broken-linked Famitsu source, will feature 3D manipulation of the pieces in what looks to be a mélange of Jenga and EA's Steven Spielberg's Boom Blox.
We get the joke ("what a hilariously awkward take on such a hard-to-mess-up gameplay formula!"), but we have to admit we're intrigued by the potential of taking Tetris in a new direction. Nintendo had previous success with its alternate Tetris modes in the Nintendo DS version of the game. Maybe a physics-based iteration of the tetromino-tilting title isn't such a crazy idea after all.

So are you the anti-fernando?
Schmobu @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:31AM
these graphics could exist on a gamecube original. I should know I'm a graphics artist

3D Tetris,I thought that died with the virtual boy.
Meanwhile try Phun.
StrangeBum @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:12AM
My younger brother recently discovered that while waiting for Crayon Physics Deluxe. I got him hooked on the original Crayon Physics beta thing.
I haven't played it myself yet, but Phun looks...well, yeah, fun.

Isn't 3-d tetris one of the only games the video game nerd did like on virtual boy?
Kuuma @ Apr 1st 2008 11:34PM
What kind of prank of this? It's not mean or cold-hearted.
That looks like a cool game that no one would get excited about.

tetrisphere?
adolph_vega @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:25AM
that actually sounds cool, with some head tracking it could kick some serious ass.
to bad its fake

Interestingly, there are two new tetrominos made possible by using cubes instead of squares. Three cubes make a corner, and then the final block can be added on the top or the bottom of one of the sides. That makes nine possible combinations.

a man can dare to dream one day a year....then just as swiftly see his dreams snatched away...

Tetris would not work in 3D. At all.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:39AM
Point made, I mean, how would you turn the shapes, see the middle, rotate the screen, all while trying to get a completly flat surface? lol
Jack (SFC: 4983 4617 3409) @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:08PM
I remember a PS1 game that was almost exactly like this. It was a top down view Tetris. But of course it was an actual "Tetris" titled game. Does anyone remember the title of it??
Martez @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:16PM
This reminds me. Nintendo REALLY needs to put Tetrisphere on the VC. REALLY.
