A true waste of time would be to read Whittel's books IMO.

What a dumb uneducated jerk.

I don't know about the teen pregnancy thing, but playing TOO MUCH video games i can see being compared to drugs. For quite a few (probably many here at this site), it consumes your lives... and unlike having family, love, devotion to a good cause, education, even work that takes 30+ hours a week of your time...30 hours of gaming is in fact a total waste of time and probably should register that self-evaluation is necessary.
For those using drugs or video games as a casual means of escapism that doesn't deride the important things in life...good for you. Both are harmless when used properly.
I agree with many here that video games are more like books and movies. BUT, you're missing the point. Watching movies for 40 hours a week is in fact a personal issue and a total waste of your time. Watching a movie or two a week or playing a game for 30 minutes before heading to sleep...what's wrong with that?
Anecdotal evidence warning ;-) -
I got a roommate that's 40 something, single (at this rate for the rest of his life), unhappy ... and plays warcraft all night long for 60+ hours a week. He might as well be on drugs...same difference. Entertainment became an inhibitor to him.

While that is completely true, and nobody is arguing that video games can't screw up your life...the two examples he used could very well screw up your life from just one use. Obviously, anything without moderation is harmful. In the article he mentions overdosing on mud and rain and wind or whatever, but if you spend every waking hour standing out in the rain, that isn't beneficial either. It'd be different if he was specifically targeting 10 hour marathon MMOers, but he's complaining that he'll never buy a "Nintendo" (whatever that is) for his kids becuase it'll automatically devour their lives. He's a twit that doesn't seem to understand that there's a difference between 10 hour per day addicts and people that play their "Nintendos" a few hours per week. It's fear of the unknown. It's not unlike people that refuse to go anywhere near a slot machine because as everyone knows, you'll be instantly addicted.

Jeez, the Brits seem worse than us Americans.

And they don't even have the massive amounts of fundamentalist religious nuts, social progressive a$$hats, and irresponsible adults that complain about video games in the U.S.

BTW Samfish, where do you get your inappropriate Peach and Daisy images?

Plus, Joystiq probably won't appreciate me telling folks where to get porn.

But the website's background is green, if that helps.

To be honest, he's entitled to dislike video games. Lots of people don't like games. I have no malice against someone who doesn't like games, even if they've never played so much as Nibbles on their cell phone.

Where he crosses the line is in comparing them to major, truly life-wrecking vices. I like games, and I'd like to think that my liking games and playing them fairly often does not lump me in with addicts or unplanned mothers.

Then again, ever since that British report came out utterly cutting the legs out from under each and every argument heretofore used against gaming, I suppose we really should have seen the increasingly irrational, paranoid, ultra-conservative-to-the-point-of-making-Amish-look-progressive arguments coming.

In a way, i completely agree with you john and I also appreciate your level-headed-ness with people that disagree with you.
What I kind of disagree is with your thought that you can't compare the addiction to games with the addiction to other things. Although, it is strange. You almost have to reevaluate the definition of addiction.
Video games are proven NOT to alter the brain like a true addiction does. I feel video games (particularly mmos) are an addiction much like owning a dog is an addiction. You "feel" like you "have to" take care of that dog everyday...for as much time as it needs. Much like your mmo character needs to be leveled up and taken care of in a competing with the Jones' way. Of course, that's all illusional. Your character isn't real...it doesn't need your attention. So, is that illusion considered an addiction? I don't know...from what I've seen from many people it is.

What do you mean exactly when you say "alter the brain". Playing video games or enjoying any hobby for that matter, releases various chemicals in the brain which would alter your state of mind. So I'm not sure what you're saying has been proven.

@ Jack,
If you look at what alcohol does to the brain, it actually rewires the brain to need alcohol. Thus...true chemical addiction. Nicotine is the same thing. That crap creates a vicious cycle in the brain. People know cigarettes kill, and yet CAN NOT stop.
Video games certainly causes your brain to react in many ways and potently...many games are essentially a brain busting booster. Constant problem solving and psuedo-feelings of disaster make your brain feel like it's in a rollercoaster but not moving. Yet, it never rewires your brain to REQUIRE more. That has been proven. You may want more...but it's no nicotine.
But you create a good point...people in a non-chemical way get addicted to adrenaline. There's a name for those kind of people...adrenaline junkies. Maybe gamers and adrenaline junkies have more in common than you might think.

You're absolutely correct in saying that being a gamer is just as much an addiction as being a dog owner: Neither one are actually an addiction in any single sense of the word whatsoever.

An addiction is a physical and psychological compulsion to do something, beyond normal responsibilities or reason. Robbing a bank to shoot up is a sign of addiction. Robbing a bank to feed your dog is... well, it's a sign you might have some pretty screwed-up priorities, but it's a sign that (grand larceny aside) you have a sense of responsibility.

Another way to look at it is, why do parents let their kids take care of pets if it's an addiction?

@ Jack again

To help you picture the difference between a true chemical addiction and an addiction.

100's or even 1000's of people die every year while in the process of getting OFF heavy drugs. Why? Because their brains think they need those heavy drugs to live... and the brain literally kills itself when it doesn't get what it needs, which is killing them anyway.

@ John

Yeah, I definitely see what you mean. But i'm looking at it a little differently. YOu're definition of addiction is "An addiction is a physical and psychological compulsion to do something, beyond normal responsibilities or reason." That seems like a fair definition to me.
But the difference is simple. A dog is real. It actually needs you. A game doesn't love you, doesn't need you to feed it, etc. So, does that illusion define the "compulsion to do something, beyond normal responsibilities or reason?" There is no real reason to take care of your sims character for 30 hours a week. There is no responsibility...it's an illusion.
I'm not sure to be honest if i truly agree with myself of with you. I'm kinda torn, its just something I think about.
I KNOW my roommate is addicted to warcraft...but why? I can't add it up properly.

for me gaming is completely necessary. I work hard and after I work hard I need something to relieve some stress. One day that's t.v. another its video games, music, or friends. On certain days I may just want to play video games and that's it. If that classifies as an addiction I'm fine with that.

I wonder what his stress relief is so someone can claim that's a waste of time and see how he reacts.

For me videogames are there either to make me happy or angry depending on my Lag in Halo 3 or TF2.Yeah they are great to relieve stress especially since I work in Tech support.

Sincerely I rather do sports but there is no where to do them, all local parks are closed and every green area is now an office building. Gyms are way too expensive and the gym pool looks kind of grim.

Um, yes heroin will almost certainly screw up your life if you use it habitually, as it is incredibly addictive and deadly.

However, a great many people's parents were teenagers when they had them. Teenage pregnancy is not, per se, a life-destroying event. It depends on the person, their level of education, whether the father contributes, and what kind of support they get from their families and friends.

Nor does being a teenager automatically make you "unfit" as a parent. And conversely, there are a great many douchebag adults on this planet who have kids and treat them like total crap.

I would not compare teenage pregnancy to heroin any more than I would compare heroin to video games.

Editorial writers are devil spawn! Moreover they are excessively lazy and make stuff up, but that's only a cover for the real truth... they don't really understand the language that they use. Yup, they just throw words together and run with the article that provokes the worst response.

Of coarse I've never been an editorial writer, but why should I want to walk a mile in their shoes? That would be like being a prostitute or a drug dealer for a week just to try it out.

;)

But to be fair, there are plenty of things that YOU wouldn't want to try isn't there? I'm sure Mr Whittell has reasons that fuel his phobias, but his analogy is still worthy of mockery.
