Non-Wiimote controls limited for Mario Kart Wii
Fans of alternate Wii control schemes were obviously psyched when it was revealed that Mario Kart Wii would support a variety of control methods, including the Wii Classic Controller and Gamecube pad. But those fans might want to scale back their expectations, as an updated game fact sheet (posted on Nintendo's press site) claims that players who don't use the Wii Remote schemes will not be able to perform "certain moves" and "some maneuvers."
What maneuvers exactly? We're not quite sure, but the new mid-air tricks probably aren't among them -- A Link to the Future notes that an IGN preview specifically mentions Classic and Gamecube controller users can hit the d-pad to perform those. We find it hard to imagine that the plethora of joysticks and buttons on the alternate control schemes can't replicate the controls of the somewhat button-free design of the Wii Remote. Could this be an effort to encourage more use of thepractically useless 'extremely useful' Wii Wheel? You'll know as soon as we do.
From the fact sheet:
Control: Mario Kart Wii is compatible with four different control schemes, so players can customize how they want to play:

From the fact sheet:
Control: Mario Kart Wii is compatible with four different control schemes, so players can customize how they want to play:
- Wii Remote Controller (with or without Wii Wheel): Steer by tilting the Wii Remote left and right. Or snap the Wii Remote into the Wii Wheel to transform it into a steering wheel for an intuitive, motion-based control scheme.
- Nunchuk Controller: Steer with the Control Stick on the Nunchuk and use the Wii Remote to accelerate, perform tricks and drift.
- Classic Controller: Mario Kart veterans can let their thumbs do the driving with the Classic Controller. However, players cannot perform certain moves with this control scheme.
- Nintendo GameCube™ Controller: Experienced Mario Kart fans may also enjoy this familiar scheme, although some maneuvers cannot be performed.

Your jokes are limited and pathetic..... You need new material.

Shag and I always take opportunity for personal attacks towards each other.
Shagittarius @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:51AM
Considering my mom is 80, incontinent, and smells like urine and roastbeef and you find her unlimited fun, I think I can understand why you like the wii as well.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:53AM
Ok... this reply chain is a little too weird...
Maybe we should change subject now.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:55AM
What are you, like 50 years old Shag?
Oh wait, you were making that up.
Roast beef? Really?

My pussy smells like fish.
Anticrawl @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:10PM
Smells like fish! Ooo Samfish, cut me off a piece of that tuna pie baby.
playwhutyalike @ Apr 2nd 2008 7:47PM
Bedridden? I thought she was just lazy. Oh, you can thank me for the urine smell, your mom's a freak.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:35AM
It's been confirmed by several sites since yesterday. It was a mistake on Nintendo webpage...
The features missing are motion for the tricks (obviously)... you need to press the D-Pad on the Gamecube controller in any directon while in mid-air).
And other missing feature is the IR Pointer for menus.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:37AM
And the wheelies... with the Wii Remote you just move the remote forward...
With the Gamecube controller you just move the analog joystiq forward.
Jhongerkong @ Apr 2nd 2008 5:22PM
you mean, joystick.
what kind of stupid person would use joy...
ill shut up now :)
baby sea tuna @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:38AM
Can I still win a race without air-tricks? If so, I don't give a fuck, I'll be using my Wavebird.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:40AM
Theres still lots more that can be done with Wii that devs are either too lazy to put in, or just can't.
Yahzee made a good point when reveiwing Zack and Wiki, sometimes obvious commands are ignored, other times commands that would be cool are ignored. Wii boxing for example has no uppercuts, roundhouse punches etc ¬_¬
Nigeria: Cody ChesnuTT Defense Force @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:55AM
Wii boxing does have uppercuts, haymakers...
I've done it, as have most of the people I've played with.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:21PM
Hmm, need to see that for myself, last time I played it, I was struggling like crazy to get a decent upcut in :(
Lonecow @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:41AM
Screw the haters, I'm using the wheel.
Only tools and Sephiroth fans (same thing) don't use the wheel imo.
;)
Nigeria: Cody ChesnuTT Defense Force @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:43AM
This is a great idea.
For people like me, who are playing their first console Mario Kart, it will be a great leveller for online play. Assuming you get some sort of boost or bonus from these "certain moves", it would seem everybody will have an equal chance at winning.
Getting pwned by some 13year old with all the time in the world isn't that fun. This control limit seems like a good idea.
This game is going to be so cool and it's only a week or so away.
Jeff @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:44AM
Seriously, every time I'm about to buy a Wii, some other stupid thing about Nintendo comes out.
$250 for Brawl and Mario Kart and eventually a decent Mario Party isn't that bad. I expect nothing more from a Nintendo console. It's the way it has always been.
But fuck the wii-mote. I had full intentions of getting a classic controller with modded handgrips and a gamecube controller if I ever buy one.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:47AM
It's a Mario Kart game! What moves do you think you are going to need?
There are no missing moves. It's a misundestood. Yes, there are some missing features, like IR Pointer or motion, by the fact that the Gamecube or Classic controller doesnt have motion or IR Pointer.
Jeff @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:00PM
So you're saying that by using a different controller I will receive no reduced functionality whatsoever?
Meaning I can do all of the same things, I just won't have motion BS?
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:06PM
Exactly.
There are several full reviews, because this game is going to be released next week in JP and EU.
There are no missing moves... just missing motion "features", but are replaced with buttons. And the missing IR Pointer, obviously, but thats just to navigate the menus.
Mario Kart only needs a button for accelerate, brake, throw weapons and power slide. And now, in this version, they only added the mid air stunts. When you are in mid-air, you just need to press any direction in the d-pad with the Gamecube controller, or shake the Wii-Remote.
Anticrawl @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:08PM
If you gotta be a fanboy you best be a well-informed fanboy. Thumbs up Fernando.
Curmeo @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:46AM
shame on you Nintendonald's. just when i thought you couldnt possibly gimp Mario Kart Wii any more, you surprise me again with your new Nintendonald's ways.
first you take out snaking (instead of leaving it as an optional online mode) and now this?
that $15 plastic piece of shit wheel should be waggled up Iwata's ass for prioritizing the casual/non-gamer over the hardcore gamer.
Worst Review Ever @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:53AM
Isn't it funny when Curmeo acts like a disenfranchised Nintendo fanboy?
Markez @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:57AM
No, usually I just go 'oh, that loser again' and move on.
Jeff @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:02PM
I actually think it's sad that someone who clearly loved and respected Nintendo very much is forced to feel this way.
I mean, anything Nintendo does has to be an improvement over last-gen, but its the REAL gamers who are going to keep on buying games after Wii-fit is done and every soccer-mom has Wii sports. They can't abandon us completely.
lol @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:20PM
snaking and vanilla-style matches killed Mario Kart DS.
I'm glad it's gone.
I hated playing race after race on Delfino Square because that was THE snaking stage. So annoying. It's just like when I go to play people in Brawl, and I'll get 20 consecutive matches on final destination, because EVERYONE wants some watered down, blah, plain-jane stage in the name of being "hardcore".
Save that shit for tournaments.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:25PM
I love Final Destination stage =(
Mills and Boom @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:32PM
I'd like to know the comparison to Macdonalds. I've lost more calories playing Wii games than PC, DS, GBA (list goes on...).
Wouldn't a smarter person try to shoehorn in a Jamie Oliver reference since he's healthy but some people have a giant rage against him?
If anything isn't the 360 the Macdonalds console since there are no motion controls (STFU about that camera, stretch-your-arms-out game)? Hmm hmm?
Jacksons @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:57PM
@lol
You're spot on there. Playing Brawl on final destination without items is like playing Bioshock without plasmids. It's removing the game's most unique aspects.
TwEE @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:44PM
Hey Curmeo buddy.. Have your parents considered getting you therapy? Or if on the very slim chance you are an adult, have you?
Your Nintendo phobia must be stressful for you and your loved ones.. But remember as weird and detached as you must feel right now you are not alone.. There are others like you.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjxOt2u2BGM&feature=related

moving on...
SR388 @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:55AM
Curmeo remove Sony's cock from your throat! Has anyone scoped how much Nintendo bashing this troll has done in nearly all of his posts? Why do you and Shagi feel so threatened by Nintendo?
Markez @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:59AM
Well at least Shag isn't an utter dbag like Curmeodonalds.
Plus Shag's mom smells like roast beef, and I'm guess like old mayonaisse as well.
And Shag, -1 for the smells like roast beef comment. Not because I didn't laugh, I did, but because, well just because, ewww. Alright yeah I laughed quite a bit, +1 instead.

rc @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:07PM
Isn't it funny as hell that the Wii was all pimped for it's controller and everyone wants to play all it's biggest games with the gamecube controller and it's barely more powerful than the gamecube. So basically, the Wii is a gamecube with great marketing and a waggle peripheral for a few games.
Nigeria: Cody ChesnuTT Defense Force @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:10PM
Oh, my. What a boringly, trollish comment that was.
You didn't even try. No effort.
You need a gimmick. Curmeo has Nintendonald's. What's yours? Shall I help you create one?
samfish @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:27PM
Burgertendo?
no, that's Microsoft.

I think we all believed at some point before the Wii came out (and when we first got to play one) that Nintendo had something that would be revolutionary and would change the industry forever. They of course have left a big mark, but it turns out not for motion-control, but for selling to millions of people who view it and Wii Sports as a single, hot new toy. Really, that's fine, but I think what no one expected was for waggle to fall from revolution to novelty to something a lot of people don't want to mess with, preferring the normal Gamecube pad instead.
Maybe the technology is just ahead of its time? Maybe with Wii 2, you'll physically point at the screen instead of "finding" the cursor at the sensor bar. Maybe gesturing will be 100-percent reliable. Would these things spur on the revolution we all thought was here, or is motion-control destined to never fully replace buttons? I don't know.
Mr Khan @ Apr 2nd 2008 4:34PM
The revolution just wasn't as life-changing as we expected it to be
But the remains will be felt. If anyone winds up using that awkward dual-analogues scheme for FPS's next generation in lieu of some sort of pointer tech, I will be very surprised
The waggle (shake Wiimote to do "x") sort of thing isn't, but the tilt and the pointer have made their mark, quite well
WiNG @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:11PM
There is ONE SPECIAL FUNCTION that the non-wheel control schemes can't replicate:
Making you look like a moron.
