I think they should bring back a cheap model (like the 20GB). Just the essentials for a cheaper price. The 20GB was down to $350 when they discontinued it (not sure if that was MSRP, or just what retailers were selling it for).

But I think they could please a lot of people by offering a 20GB unit, lose the card readers, 2 USB, no wireless, keep BC. And sell it for 50 bucks less than it was at $299. After all, the unit (60GB?) originally cost $800 to produce and now they're down to $400 or something, so take another profit loss and get more into homes. That's what I love about Sony over other hardware makers. They make good hardware and sell it to me at a loss.

How low can we get with these specs-speculations.
How about a $250/$300 ps3 with
20gb hard drive, BD-ROM only drive (no dvd/cd), Wifi but no ethernet, 2 USB ports, HDMI and AV Multi ports, and no backwards compatibility
Comes with composite cables, a sixaxis, and some psn games.
Call it the PSiii.

I bought the 40g thinking I wouldn't neet backwards compatibility. Should have bought the 80g when I had the chance. Unfortunately it was Christmas time and had more shopping to do. If Sony manages to do an Xbox Originals type thing and allows me to download say God of War 1 & 2 I'd be pretty happy.

Removing BC was not a smart move in my opinion (and probably most others). Because a lot of people don't know what a great library of games there are for PS3. They'd take the plunge anyways based on future promise coupled with BC. But it's unfortunate they just believe the knuckle-dragging trollers who keep saying "PS3 has no games".

But anyways, I choose to believe the rumors that Sony has plans to implement full emulation on the 40GB. It makes sense anyways if you look how they had EE + gfx chip in the 60, then went to emulated EE. The next logical step is to emulate the gfx chip.

Sony mis-judged the market?
Unbelievable.

THE ONLY and I repeat THE ONLY reason there was any demand for the 80GB model is because it's the only one that's backwards compatible. If the 40 was BC, no one would give a rats ass about the 80. The sad part is that I can buy a 40GB PS3 and an ACTUAL PS2 that will play everything (not just emulate it) for less than the cost of an 80GB PS3.

Agreed.

Since the PS3's SATA hard drive can be swapped out... as long as you've got either the 60 or 80GB version, you could do anything the other PS3s could do, but with more space added if the user desired it. So you literally could have a 500GB drive internally.

...or simply USB-plug in an exteral. Either way, a nice way to backup savefiles and data(yes, the PS3 has that option).

I can honestly say I've only played 1 regular xbox game on my 360 since I bought it last year. I have no desire to play any of them at all at this point, I just had a free day, and started Vice City randomly.

I still don't get the appeal of xbox/ps2 games at this point in the video game cycle. Unless you're some budget gamer who only buys $10 games, at which I ask, why do you even have a PS3.

Let's say a big franchise game with a number 3 or 4 after it like God of War, Metal Gear, or Resident Evil is coming out...most people would probably like to replay the series first. Now if you could do that without having to dig out/plug in an old machine, why wouldn't you? GoW: Chains, made me want to go back and play the first 2, and I plan on playing the shit out of some Metal Gear before the new one comes out.

Plus, PS2 had a bunch of great games for it, while PS3 has about 5. Once you're done with those, what the hell else are you going to play? ...I mean, besides 360...

The appeal with any game not on a current gen system, is that good games are good games. I don't really play too many, but I still dig popping in Shadow of the Colossus, Ratchet & Clank, Katamari, Pikmin, or Chibi-Robo (yeah that's right I said it) every now and then.

Um Markez, Pikmin is for the Gamecube. : )

The 80gb besides having software BC, also has built in memory card readers to read compactflash, memory stick and SD cards. Thats useful at least to me.

Also has 4 USB ports vs 2 in the 40gb.

The 40gb has less vents than the other systems and requires the least power as well, obviously because of the removed components like BC and card readers.

Another reason is that SD consoles look pretty awful on HD televisions. By playing PS2 games on the PS3, you can get them scaled correctly (after new firmware -- hah!) running on an HDTV-native cable. I really, really like running PS2 games on the PS3, rather than on my original machine. And... that's without rumble.

Of course, I'm still kinda pissed that they said they're not working on a software PS2 emulator. That would allow goodies like native HD resolution and anti-aliasing, and we wouldn't have to suffer from controller disconnects all the time.

BC is about convenience for those of us who don't want to or have time to spend 20 minutes switching cables just to get crap picture quality. I love my 60GB, and I will be very unhappy if it breaks and Sony can't fix it due to a lack of parts. Yes, I still have a PS2, but I really don't want to use it.

The MG4 package is great and all, but they need to release a new dualshock SKU this month before GTA4 hits.

Its too bad the 40gb is the only one that comes in various colors, like white and silver (albeit Japan and Asia only for now). : (

Give it some b/c to make it competative. I wouldn't look at a PS3 until it can play PS2 games again.

Good. Now that Sony realizes that people actually WANT backwards compatibility... can we get someone working on some patches so my goddamn games don't crash??

Sounds like the 360 will beat them in the newest months numbers so they are pulling the same early warning stunt microsoft did recently.

Finally, now I have nothing to worry about when I'm looking for the 80gig model very soon.

Yes, I'm actually gonna get Playstation 3 before the Wii becuase the Wii is hard to find at the moment. That and I like motorstorm.

Underestimated??? LOL, -No.

What sony DID underestimate was the few on the fence wanting a ps3, but was waiting on a price drop and games. Once they dropped the price and removed b.c., the few bitched. -so now they want to turn around and re-release the 80gb. its not the size of the hd people are whining about, it's the b.c.

Btw, the ps3 aint moving in the states like people think, thats why sony is doing this.. I still see 80gb, 60gb and 20gb around my way in NYC. Still no Elites though.. The Wii pops up, then the next day its gone, but the ps3 is always around.

Right... I'm a new PS3 owner. In fact my first console since the N64, so please go easy on me...

Is the 40Gb REALLY that bad? Now I'm not trying to defend Sony here, last thing I am is a Sony fanboy, I'm just a noob who's fairly happy with my PS3 and trying to work out if I've really been conned like everyone says. So before you tell me how terrible it is, let's address the issues I know about...

1) Backwards compatibility. Doesn't really matter to me. I have no PS1 or PS2 games, and between PS, PS3 and my friends' Xboxes and Wiis I have enough games to play already...
2) USB ports. Hasn't been a problem yet. If I do need extra ones... can't I just use a hub?
3) Memory card readers... not a problem, I have USB adaptors all over the place.
4) Hard drive size. Yes, 40Gb is small. But as far as I'm concerned, 60 or 80Gb is also tiny. If/when I upgrade the hard drive it will be to something with two zeros on the end, so the 40/60/80 difference doesn't mean much to me.
5) Vents/cooling... may be an issue. I had one crash playing Burnout Paradise after a couple of hours that may have been caused by overheating... but then I've also played constantly all night with no problems.

So apart from those (and if I've got anything there wrong) is there anything else fundamentally wrong with the 40Gb PS3? Again please don't attack me for being a fanboy or trying to defend my purchase, I'm just trying to find out the facts.

i got a 60 gig at game stop apr 11. call of duty guitar hero the works. 60 gig just because of BC. 449.99 US for the system 60$ for call of duty 4, and i cant complete a full mission without the thing locking up on me, or online.

60 gig is so hard to get ahold of i cant get it replaced even though i got the warranty, possibly when the 80 gig comes out, i could upgrade to that, ive exchanged COD4 3 times they all lock up randomly its so annoying. any idea when 80 gig will be out in US and the price of it? ive got an external power air flow cooler running, a usb air flow cooler too so i know the system isnt getting hot. i dont know what the heck to do.

sell my 60 and get an 80? ask gamestop to exchange and ill cover the difference? decisions decisions.

I am thinking about getting the PS3 but I am a fan of the backwards compatibility feature. Has anyone heard any rock solid info that the 80gb MGS package will have the chip set that allows BC or will it run on the same chip set that the current 40gb model has. Is it possible that Sony is going to take the same approach that MS did with the classics selection on the 360 Marketplace?
