Analyst: Wii, GTA IV, game industry all winners in '08

Hudson Square Research analyst, Daniel Ernst, dropped a big ol' report today with ~~huge guesses~~ thoughtful analysis about what will happen in the game industry during 2008. First up, he claims the industry as a whole is ready to challenge the film industry for dominance. Next, he believes the Wii will outsell the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined this year and, finally, that Grand Theft Auto IV will become the top selling game in '08 with 13 million copies sold (not too far off from Pachter's prediction).

GameDaily has three separate stories on Ernst's epic predictions on the game industry's near future. The report makes other claims about Wii Fit selling around 10 million units and features interesting tidbits about DS games costing less than a million dollars to develop. Epic predictions are epic...

...though, I still believe if you're going to buy a new console it might as well be a DS or PSP. The 360 looks tired - as in, same old experience from the last generation. To an extent, it's a similar case on the PS3. And the Wii doesn't have many "Wii" games.

The handheld games, on the other hand, look really exciting.

I agree with the analyst. I'm having the best gaming time with the Wii and GTA4 sounds good enough for me to purchase a whole console for.

Idk if i can agree with the wii predictions....... as much as i do love my wii...i dont really see it doing as well this year as it did last year...i think the hype might be dieing down...but thats just me i guess

Agreed, someone had to say it. If you're not playing against people you've linked to it's lagtastic sometimes. But cmon, Tuna, typically turns out that the majority of any systems catalog is garbage.

What a risky set of predictions.

Of course, there was something on Drudge about two weeks ago about how video game sales were on par with box office receipts, so that's not a big shock.

The Wii is still in short supply, so I don't think that they will, in the U.S., match both 360 and PS3. One thing I'm hearing is that it's fun for a while or with parties, but (mostly) guys want their 360 or PS3 for the serious games (due to the number of HDTV sales increasing).

And it's like a no-brainer that GTA IV is going to sell. Combine the graphics available now with the abilities of the consoles now, and 12 - 15 million copies is not unreasonable for this game. I'm not a big fan of the GTA series, but I'm planning on picking up a copy just because this one looks like fun. (And it'll fill the time for pointless violence and destruction until the end of August when Mercs2 finally comes out.)

He's not wrong. The only time my Wii even got turned on is when I had a bunch of people over...I mean, before Rock Band existed. And that was still 10x more than any of my Wii-owner friends have played theirs.

So yeah, the hardware itself will continue to sell well, but the attach rate will continue to be abysmal, and a lot of the machines will keep collecting dust...at least until millions of old ladies and fat suckers decide to blow $90 on Wii Fit this summer.
