Quake 3 Arena ported to iPhone/iPod Touch
Advertisements have shown us that the iPhone is a tool with a wide array of functions -- YouTube perusing, calamari ordering, and astronaut deafening, to name a few. But no commercials have warned of the iPhone's (and the iPod Touch's) sinister, newly implemented abilities -- fragging, railgunning, and gibbing. We speak, of course, of the handheld's recently developed Quake 3 Arena application, which uses the device's touch screen and accelerometer to crudely recreate that warm, familiar mouse-and-keyboard feeling. Just thinking of the possible on-the-go LAN parties we'd be able to hold is making us consider finally trading in our Zack Morris phonebrick for Apple's sexy cellular device.

bigsofty @ Apr 6th 2008 9:10PM
Waste of time, control is terrible... use the touch screen and break it within 5 mins...
Shignami @ Apr 6th 2008 1:43PM
Wha? I have a friend who did this on his Sprint HTC touch phone a month ago.
michael @ Apr 6th 2008 2:20PM
so? in the end...he still has an htc touch
Arno @ Apr 6th 2008 1:57PM
Haha, I'd hate to have to play against *anybody* online who's using a PC with that thing.
Instant death!
Poisoned Al @ Apr 6th 2008 2:02PM
Interesting. Pointless, useless and a huge waste of time, but interesting none the less.

sry, it just struck me as odd, like why the guy that did this.....did this...
Jeff @ Apr 6th 2008 2:48PM
nevertheless > nonetheless
The former is used by Luke Skywalker.

PROTIP: Poisoned Al is an anti-iPhone troll. No feeding.
Poisoned Al @ Apr 6th 2008 3:19PM
The thing is liquid, no body cares you fucking grammar nazi!
*wait's for the corrections for this post*
Poisoned Al @ Apr 6th 2008 3:35PM
Just because I think people will buy any old shit if you put it in an pretty enough box, doesn't make me a toll. The iPone is just the epitome of style over substance. But who cares if your phone has a horrible interface, a shit stills only camera, 2G tech and is horrifically priced? It's SHINY and has an Apple logo on it! WoooOOOoooo!
Besides all that, this is still pointless. Quake 3 on ANY phone would be unplayable. Someone should have told Nokia that.
Mills and Boom @ Apr 6th 2008 3:54PM
lol Poison Al refuses to think the iPhone is the best phone on the market. He's probably one of them people who hates something because it's popular. I'm right.
Bet he still swears by his Creative Jukebox LOL
el serpiente @ Apr 6th 2008 4:11PM

mko @ Apr 6th 2008 4:21PM
damn it. The iPhone is cool, if you've used it you know the interface is top notch. It is missing a few things, but I'm glad it came around to give other mobile phone makers a kick in the pants. Now the innovation starts in all companies! It's good for the consumer no matter what your fav manufacturer is.

Just trying to lighten up the mood in here a bit, nothing more. I'm neutral on the subject.
Mills and Boom @ Apr 6th 2008 5:18PM
Quick switch your sarcasm detectors to off!
Oh wait!
el serpiente @ Apr 6th 2008 6:29PM
Why is it that whenever someone is called out for saying something stupid, they all of a sudden claim it was "sarcasm"?
Mills and Boom @ Apr 6th 2008 7:22PM
If you haven't noticed yet I just troll around... I'd give you a medal but I'm all out at the moment.
But if you take a troll seriously then sheesh! Hope you don't cry yourself to sleep!
rTwelve @ Apr 6th 2008 7:41PM
Wow, let's take my rants on fanboyism/trolling (360 vs PS3 vs Wii/PC vs Mac vs Linux) and apply them here, oh wait, tl;dr.
I don't care if the iPhone is not _the best_ phone on the market, the fact that you have people like Poisoned Al running around spouting off about crap he doesn't know about and refuses to look into because it has a certain logo on it is just as stupid as these stupid trolls going "LOL WII SPORTS MACHINE" and "HAHA 6 PEOPLE USE PSN"
Seriously, style over substance, are you that dense? The iPhone OS is NOT a horrible interface (in fact going through pages of clicks and left button menus could be considered equally crap). I concede the point about 2G, as well as other miscellanea like stereo bluetooth, of course this is Apple's first phone so we'll see about that.
But the iPhone can call, text, sync calendar/contacts, play music, video --actually everything an iPod can do--, go online, check youtube, mail, maps, weather, stocks more conveniently than a webpage, download music online, take notes, email those notes to yourself, browse the itunes store, take pictures, email pictures, etc. that's not counting jailbreaking (which is pretty effortless these days) and the upcoming sdk, which will improve its usefulness many times over. if the thing looks like some ugly kyocera phone that would still be appealing.
and i can turn around and evangelize over a nokia pohne, or some winmo htc phone, but that's not the point.
the point is YOU ARE A TROLL and a troll is someone who seems to have a personal vendetta against a company... why do you hate apple so much? you should embrace the iphone, look what it's done for competition... you've got phones now like voyager, and htc touch, and upcoming ones like the samsung instinct and the verizon lg vx9700... these carriers and manufacturers would not have cared enough to make them had it not been for what apple made.
tl;dr: so if you have nothing good to say don't post.

rTwelve @ Apr 6th 2008 7:42PM
oh, and mills and boom, trolling is never okay. not even the people pretending to troll like howl pendragon are funny.
Mills and Boom @ Apr 6th 2008 9:01PM
I know, I'm sorry.
But really now. Why do we never hear well reasoned critique on the iPhone? More often than not it's just some stark raving mad balloon going having a little sob.
Apple's first ever mobile phone and look at how well it did in the US (not here since Europe has much better data options than Edge). Feature wise it's only missing a couple of features which can be added via software updates. And hurry up 32gb. Soon as thats out I'll be ditching my 80gb iPod so hard it'll make the anti-Apple crowds head spin all over their Creative Zens.
el serpiente @ Apr 6th 2008 9:35PM
Why is it that whenever someone gets PWNED, they all of a sudden claim they were "just trolling"?
Poisoned Al @ Apr 6th 2008 11:18PM
You're right Twelve, it was too long and I didn't bother to read it.
Sleepy time now.
zzzz
Mr Khan @ Apr 6th 2008 2:53PM
I wouldn't call it pointless if it were adapted for network play, but its neat as it is anyway
OOC: How important is processor speed for laptops? The best deal on a laptop I can find (more RAM, more HDD Space, more included software that i actually want), but it has the worst CPU clock out of all of 'em, 1.6 Ghz compared to 1.7 and 2.1 for the same price, but nobody else is offering 2 GB of RAM, they're all after 1 each
Raikage (LDF CRAB BATTLE!!!) @ Apr 6th 2008 3:28PM
I'm no expert... but...
You can always upgrade RAM and your Hard Drive whereas (
Mills and Boom @ Apr 6th 2008 3:18PM
I love Quake and I love my iPhone but never the 2 should mix. iPhone would need much more than a touchscreen and gyroscopes for fluid play.
nightmare452 @ Apr 6th 2008 3:24PM
once again: I pick Prisoner from Halo 1
Thx

Seriously impressive, but is it really going to be any fun with those controls? Awkward, not to mention imprecise.
jason @ Apr 7th 2008 9:05AM
This has been done before. Quake and Quake 2 (OpenGL!) have been out for s60 for a while now. TV out on my N82 and wii controller Mobipad software it runs and plays quite well. See for yourself (not my video):

In theory this sounds cool, but watching him use iWaggle looks annoying as hell. No thanks, I'll wait for Quake Live
