Do you remember when the Wii's Virtual Console service was more classic library and less classless landfill? This week's dump sees players scrounging for a sports title and shelling out dough for a cookie-themed puzzler.
Yoshi's Cookie (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Help Mario align matching types of baked goods in this puzzle game with a cruel reward -- successful maneuvers make the cookies disappear!
Bases Loaded (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Swing away with "one of the most popular baseball games on the NES." So, yeah. It's baseball. Do you really need an elucidating paragraph on that? (Oh, alright.)
...I think I'm going to avoid any further VC joystiq articles because I feel I'm going to say something negative. And the internet clearly isn't the place for negativity.
But I would like to say that the VC has been sucking some bland balls recently. Real bland balls.
Yes it was a great game for the NES, but by today's standards it's horrid. You can pick up last year's 2k game or the still great MVP baseball 2005 for about $5 now instead of spending it on this game.
I have to agree VC has been aweful! It was 3 games a week now only 2, and the 2 they come out with are usually just garbage. Nintendo should use their voting channel to pick what games should come out every week. BTW Cody Chesnutt is amazing!
I can't help but wonder if this is still intentional Brawl sales inflation. If so, that's truly unfortunate for two reasons: They might do the same thing in the coming month for M. Kart, and moreover, Brawl will be selling like crazy for the entire Wii life-cycle (see Melee if you don't believe that). In support of this theory, VC titles tend to come in good or bad clusters. For instance, 2 weeks or so before Brawl dropped, Lords of Thunder AND Harvest Moon came out in the same week. And since then, nothing.
I loved Bases Loaded back in the day. I even kept my own score sheets because I'm a stat junkie. Baseball games are about the only digital sport game I bear playing these days.
Yoshi's Cookie is one of my all-time favorite games! The one-player mode is pretty bad, but the two-player mode is amazing.
Rondo of Blood and MUSHA were recently announced in other regions, so hopefully they'll come out here soon and people will stop complaining. In the mean time, I'm enjoying Lords of Thunder and still haven't gotten Alien Soldier or Sin and Punishment, so I don't mind a chance to catch up on backlog.
Bases Loaded was actually pretty impressive for its time. It's too bad that video doesn't show two of the coolest things about it; home runs, and the fights that break out after a couple of beanballs. My friends and I played the crap outta this, and it was pretty much our go-to baseball game until Tommy Lasorda came out on Genesis.
I'm still waiting for a baseball game that actually lets you clear the dugout and start a fight Major League style. I'm trademarking this so prepare to pay up Sony or 2K, bitches.
Actually, the Gameboy and GameCube versions are four-player, and the Super NES version maxes out at two. While the CPU battles and puzzle mode are nice additions, I think the Super NES version is the worst because the extra animation makes the controls less responsive.
Huh, really? Could've sworn it had 4-player... Maybe I am confusing it with the Nintendo Puzzle Collection version, 'cause I could've sworn I had played a 4-player version on a TV, not on a Game Boy. Ah, well.
Yoshi's Cookie was a classic. Fans of this and other classic video games might want to scope out http://www.ClasVena.com :) There's plenty of postings on old skool games.
What about the original (SNES) Super Mario Kart? Maybe they'll put it on VC the same day Mario Kart Wii comes out. Even though I preordered the Wii version, I'd pay eight bucks for the original in a second.

Hey now, Bases Loaded was a great baseball game back in the 'day.
Though personally I'd prefer to see Bad News Baseball on the VC instead. Rabbit umpires FTW.

So, can we pretty much give up any hope of more than 2 VC games per week?

5 bucks is still too much IMO for anyone that owns a standard PC and enternet connection.

Why the NES version of Yoshi's Cookie, and not the superior Super NES version? That version had 4-player mode!

They should freaking release the original Smash Brothers already. All three on one console would be amazing.
