So MS is prototyping some ideas, and someone from the inside leaks it. It doesn't surprise me.

Maybe they're planning on selling it as a peripheral to some game. Package some cheap plastic with cheap plastic with a B or C grade game and its something to help diversify the profits for a game publisher.

This isn't going to be anything major. At best, it'll be something a few games may plan on using, but they'll all be packaged with it because they cant assume people'll would honestly adopt a peripheral without a game attached unless it was shipped with the system they bought.

Don't do it, M$..

One big reason why I don't play my Wii is that everything I own has motion control and I get bored of it. I wish the expanded on the arcade control. Give it rumble and I'm good to go.

I think a Wiimote type device would be great for the 360. As much as I used to love Nintendo, they have a unique controller that could be used for a number of game types... strategy games being a big one, as well as Adventure games. Anything that makes the possibility of Starcraft or Grim Fandango a possibility on a console, I'm all for.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this supposed leaked photo looks like nothing more than the Xbox 360 buzzer for the trivia game Scene It! Check it out:

Good. Well, unless they're going Sixaxis-style with motion controls and no pointer, because that would be useless. I don't give a shit about motion controls, but bring on the pointer function. It's a superior interface, period. Let's just skip over all this pretending-to-be-original nonsense and rip it off. Now!

I'm still a little on the fence about buying a 360, but this would do it for me. Why? Because after playing Resident Evil 4 and Medal of Honor Heroes 2, I'm not sure I can go back to analog controls in shooters. And since Wii developers obviously aren't pursuing those kinds of games, the pointer technology might as well go somewhere it'll be used.

So yes. Bring it on.

You know, I understand that there is a natural progression in technology and that new ideas are based on old ideas. One company will look at another company's successful product and try to expand on the idea in one way or another. That's pretty natural.

However, this is a difference between copying and improving an idea. Granted, it is hard to see from such a simple sketch all the details of the rumored device, but from what little info we have, this looks like it merely copies the Wiimote with little to no improvement.

I think the people on this board are smart enough to realize that when one company merely copies another, it does not further technology. It does not improve the state of gaming. And it most certainly is not a respectable business practice, legal or not.

If Microsoft truly innovates with their new controller, if they take motion controls to the next level and spend as much time developing them as Nintendo did with the Wiimote, then more power to them. But, if as suggested by what I've read so far, Microsoft merely copies an already successful design without improving it and without trying to add something to the technology, then this doesn't deserve to succeed.

For the morons talking about the Microsoft Sidewinder here are some tidbits on why it was not copying:

1) Nintendo makes there own proprietary tech. Hence why rumble for Nintendo is different from Immersion. Most of them came from '91-'94 during the Project Reality test phase.

2) Two of the big things that set the Wii Remote apart from just motion is the IR Pointer and the Remote Shape design. The Sidewinder also used imprecise gyroscopes instead of accelerometers.

3) Nintendo has made the Wii Remote as staple instead of one out of 1 billion PC add ons and also came out when the tech was perfected enough to work 90% of the time.

4) By your standards, Microsoft and Sega ripped off Nintendo but having a Microphone built into there controllers for in-game communication?

You all fail hard and sloppy.

You're a genius. I was about to point out that same thing.

Nintendo didn't invent touch screens but if PSP2 had two screens and a touchscreen, I'd call that a rip-off. So now if Microsoft do release this, in the same baton-shaped way, with a pointer and a free-hand extra controller, then it would be a blatant Nintendo rip-off.

Microsoft making sex toys is just a scary, scary idea. I don't even WANT to think about what a Red Ring of Death is for that.

Unfortunately, I just did. Yuck!

You guys DO know that MS did motion control YEARS ago with the Sidewinder. It didn't take off then and I can't really see it taking off outside of the Wii now either. It would be kind of funny to see MS succeed where Sony failed. I can't honestly see me using it though. I don't use on the PS3, why have it on my 360 too?

I do not like the 6-axis all that much because for the most part it is not used properly ... I mean one skydiving scene in R&C future ... Just seems like they did that at the last minute ... It is funny Microsoft has Blu-Ray rumors as well as motion controls now as well ... Taking the best from its competitors ... I say go ahead ... but improve upon the Wii mote don't just copy it

Personally i believe a lot of you are missing the point or missing a key element. The fact that they say Rare is developing the device signifies that the device will be bundled with a game from rare. In other words this device will be no different from the Scene it controller in that its only intended for those types of games.

Another thing is that this could be setup as a division within Rare that create games that use the pointer. From the way the article reads, there probably will not be motion controls but instead a pointer device. IMHO, it’s the pointer that makes the wiimote instead of the waggle abilities.

There are a lot of games that could benefit from a controller that has a pointer. Motion controls themselves in my opinion has not proven themselves that much.

Anyway, if this is bundled with the right game and gives it that extra edge, it could be successful just like the Wii fit board. In the end, its all about the games

Motion controls have not "fully proven them selfs" in the same way controls for 3D did not back in the day. People are noobs at programing them.

Wanna see a shining example. No More Heroes, which uses motion to enhance and accent the action instead of wiggle and waggle 24/7.

It's button equivalent of a game that uses timed button presses to execute firm commands verses a game that just tells you to "MASH A!" for every thing that happens. Which game is more fun and challenging?

Right.

Another thing people fail to mention is that this prototype device besides ripping off motion controls, tv-remote-shaped, pointer function, but it also has a speaker. so this really is a wiimote knockoff point for point. people just don't realize what a huge innovation this was by nintendo, including audio feedback on a controller in unison with the other features. its subtle but very immersive for those who have experienced it. thought i'd point that out, since most people fail to mention it, perhaps not realizing the significance.

Why is the microphone taking up so much real estate on the controller? Most embedded microphones are smaller than a standard LED. Did the guy who made the sketch get the speaker and microphone confused? If so, what else is wrong? What purpose would there be for multi-colored LEDs? Bling bling? Finding your car keys before heading out to the rave?

I call bullshit. MS may indeed be taking a second look at motion sensing, but it doesn't make sense to do it like this -- even as a game-specific device.

lets hope this never happens. Motion controls are the problem with the wii. At least if it didnt use that crap of motion controlling I could just call it the gamecube 1.5 and enjoy it. Unfortunetly the public seems to like this waggle crap and the wii sells way more then any gamecube 1.5 would so nintendo is doing whats best profit wise. But not best gameplay wise. People who owned a gamecube, just imgine the gamecube used the motion controls for all its games. What a load of crap that system would of been too. Im sure it would of sold better. The casual market is retarded.

The wii is the manual of cars. For the casual person too dumb to learn how to drive stick.

I realize that no one will prbly see this cuz it is really old but i have leaked info of the next xbox 360 update and it isn't final but one of the items on the list for hte update is as follows "6. Calibration options for motion sensor devices", along with the option for donating microsoft poitns and other cool things, but this update is the best becasue it tells us that microsoft is in fact making a motion sensitive controller for the 360 and since it is an update they can make it usable for ALL games, and so it prbly won't be a wiimote wiip off, it will prbly be something new and innovative, and i have one question for all u 360 owners.......motion sensitive-Halo 3 anyone?
