shame on you M$. for only including the RRoD under the 3 year extended warranty even though your system faces numerous other widespread hardware problems. for flat out lieing about your hardware issues.

i would have bought your system if it worked for more than a few weeks at a time. looks like i'll just continue playing the "exclusive AAA" 360 games when they get ported on PC.

You're kidding right? Thats just outright retarded, man... Try thinking over what you say before you post, because that is a VERY misinformed post.

The ONLY widespread issue is the RRoD; this isn't the RRoD. This happens on a small percentage of 360s, otherwise it would have gotten more press and not been "news". Had it been a widespread, Microsoft would have covered it.

My Xbox 360 has yet to have a single disc read error or RRoD, or any other error, and its a launch console; manufactured on October 12th, 2005.

I see the game demonstrating the problem is Oblivion. Any chance it occurred on an Ayleid ruin on the Red Ring Road? Just saying.

some of you are saying this is not newsworthy but personally I'm glad this has been posted. This happened to my Elite last night in the middle of Assasin's Creed before it decided it would be fun to scratch my disc >_<

Without this, I probably wouldn't have found out what the error is.

Thanks Kyle. Thyle.

You really have to feel sorry for xbox fans. The only thing they really have going for them is Halo 3.

Yeah, so I read this article today after work and think "that sucks". Lo and behold, when I get home from a party and boot up COD4 before bed, I get the same damn error I read about today. And the best part? Its a launch system from 05. Never had a problem till tonight. Goddamn it.

I had the E74 issue, I called MS and told them and they in short said "F-U" and hung up. The long story is that I asked what that error message means. The guy said "It means something is faulty with the graphics processor" I then proceeded to ask what do the 3 red lights mean he then said "something is wrong with either the memory, cpu or graphics processor" I pointed out, that wouldn't both error be the same, and shouldn't the warranty cover the three parts mention. He stymied over the question and only repeated the rhetoric he was trained to say "We only extend the warranty for the 3 Red Light". Then it devolved into a bit of circular logic, with me asking again what the three red lights mean, and him saying "an issue with graphics, cpu or memory" then me asking what issue I am having, with him responding "you are having an issue with your graphics chip" then I ask, why won't you cover it, to which he replied, "because you don't have the three red light" then I asked what the three red lights mean....It went on like that for a few minutes until he broke and transfered me to his supervisor. I basically went through that same spiel with the supervisor until I broke out with asking for an address to MS legal department. The supervisor nervously gave it to me. I then asked for his REAL name, he then said he did give me his real name. I inform him that I know that the service line is handled by the american job stealing people of india and demanded his and his underlings name. He refused and hung up.

A few days later I spoke to a friend of mine and he recommended I just stick things in the fan on the back of the 360 let it over heat and get the 3 red light, call back and tell them I have the 3 red lights issue. Well I did just that, and after a few weeks I got my 360 back, and it works like new.

I'm truly disgusted by this situation. I shouldn't have to break my machine further to be covered under a warranty that covers one of three parts that break, but not a singular part of those parts. But I am absolutely disgusted about MS having to send support calls over to india. Their are people in America that would be more then happy to take the job. I DONT CARE IF IT SAVES MS MONEY and we, as AMERICANS, shouldn't either. I know I'm gonna get a response along the lines of "well...thats just how it is...you know capitalism", well when your standing in a breadline or living on the street in a few years because it was cheaper for your company to let you go and import a worker from another country you can just repeat that mantra while your in a line to get food.

Well, this backs up my comments further. The 360 is a piece of hardware crap and I won't subject my uncle to get one, not even for Ninja Gaiden II. And neither will I waste my money on a piece of junk. I'm glad I have a PS3. It works fine and I'm getting a PSP as well.

You 360 fanboys can deny the obvious all you want but your console is pure crap. MS shouldn't have problems in the first place if they were so clear on defeating Sony. That's going to hinder them EVEN further.

And don't EVEN think about calling me a fanboy. I would have gotten a 360 if MS didn't have these problems in the first place.

I won't argue with you, because nothing you said is wrong. The 360 does have some great games though, which makes it appealing to me. The hardware is complete crap. If that bothers you, wait until they fix it, or there's a new, more solid version of the console. I know for a fact I won't be getting any of the next-gen systems at launch next time.

We've had the E74 Error three times... all after playing Oblivion. This is what happened to us.

We bought the 360 back in November, the Elite model. Less than a week later, after playing the hell out of Oblivion, the system crashed and we shut it down. Turning it back on we got the red light. I thought it was the RRoD, but looking up the ring code gave us this error.

We called Microsoft and reported the issue and they sent us a 'coffin' to send the 360 back. The next morning, in desperation, I tried it again and the thing worked. We had tried it a few times over the night, but it was dead as could be. We figured maybe it was a glitch, and Microsoft told us to hold onto the coffin in case the system did fail.

A few days later, again after playing Oblivion, it did the same thing. This time, we waited about 6 hours and the problem was gone. After the third time, we just stopped playing Oblivion all together and we haven't had the problem since.

I'd guess it's some sort of overheating issue or something. It sucks, because Oblivion was awesome. Now it's just sitting there on the shelf.

I was playing a game of NCAA 08 on my Xbox360 premium and the screen did the same thing as the one in the article(but mine was more of a greenish tinge) I saved my game, restarted and when it came up I had the E74 error.

I was kind of excited at first. I thought "ok, well at least I am still under my warranty" since this was a near launch 360 it was plagued disc reading errors, loud dvd rom, ect. So I went and looked up all the warranty info and found that the E74 isnt covered under the 3 year warranty.

I sure hope that MS changes their warranty to cover the one red ring : /

I have also received the E74 system error. seems unfair to me that some system errors are covered and others aren't.

Did I cause my system to Red Ring the first two times it broke? no.

Did microsoft fix my system for free both times? yes, it was free, no they didn't get 'fixed'. (ie: they broke again)

should I have to shell out a hundred bucks for a 'repair' yet again when I am not responsible for the damage? no sir.

but 360 ftw anyways

I got the same error twice on my first 360. But turning it off then on again solved it for me. The same 360 had the RROD and after getting it back from MS it still had the RROD. I'm still contemplating sending it in AGAIN.

I am waiting for the announcement that 360 can give you cancer.

Then I think it would be a good money saver to drop 360's on our enemies than bombs, they would be more effective.

Especially paired up with Sony's batteries with first gen Wii Remote straps.

I'm already on year 2 of my 360 and still nothing bad has happened. Unless you count playing HD games on a standard TV as bad.

I have one of the "new" 360s with HDMI, so I'm really hoping nothing happens to it. Just yesterday though, right after I turned it on it turned itself off, then when I turned it back on the settings were all messed up. What does that mean? I'm scared now...

I love my Xbox360 with a passion that burns hotter than the sun, so it's with great reluctance that I pile on here. The wife and I recently bought a new Xbox360 Pro for my son as a birthday present, and it literally died as described here within 24 hours.

Fortunately, Toys 'R' Us Canada made an exception to their store policy (which does not allow for returns OR exchages of 360 consoles regardless of the defect, due to the high defect rate of the console) and allowed us to exchange it for a Halo Edition 360.

Also, a friend and co-worker of mine recently lost his 360 to symptoms similar to what my son's experienced... and his was also a Pro edition. 3 weeks later, it came back from Microsoft replaced with and entirely new console.

On a side-note: I have owned a total of 4 Xbox360 consoles, and so far the only 2 that didn't go defective on me were the Halo Editions (mine going strong for 6 months now, my son's for 2 months).

Bottom line here... media/gamer pressure is what made Microsoft cave on the warranty during the red ring scandal, and media/gamer pressure is what it will take this time around.

I was an all-Microsoft boy from day 1, so there is no bias here... but I recently purchased a PS3 and have been enjoying the heck out of it. I still prefer to game on my 360, though, because I prefer the Xbox Live interface, the controller, and the quicker loading times (and lack of long, PC-like installs).

However, the experience is not so much greater on 360 that I'll tolerate losing another console to MS' engineering/design defects. If I lose one more, it's getting replaced with a second PS3... PERIOD (after all... with Blu ray, free online gaming, and a semi-functional web browser, it ain't all bad on the other side ;)
