THQ: WoW has peaked, Warhammer 40k MMO years away
THQ executive Jack Sorenson tells Eurogamer he believes World of Warcraft has "peaked." He's not daft though, recognizing that there may always be millions of people playing it and that WoW is a great business. On that note, Sorenson is playing the good cheerleader for THQ's upcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMO and says it's still years away.
THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors in 2006 that the company wasn't going to take on Warcraft until it was in a "downward slope." Sorenson backs that up by echoing the same thoughts of many MMO producers over the last couple of years that titles need to launch "great" now. It appears THQ is in no rush to get the Warhammer 40K MMO out the door without more than a prayer to the Emperor that it'll survive.

/sigh
as long as DoW 2 is good, I'll wait patiently, I suppose... don't really have any other choice
bigsofty @ Apr 8th 2008 7:23PM
WoW equation... (300$ a year) + (Game price) = millions of idiots...

What does your reply have to do with the OP?
Three things for you:
1. Stop being a troll
2. Don't ever reply to the first poster simply to get your comment seen at the top of the list
3. Fuck off

It's news that WoW has peaked? Geez.
Also, a 40k MMO? That's going to fail, or at least be much much less successful. Sci-Fi just doesn't work as well for RPGs, fewer well-known monsters, lack of spellcasting, etc.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 8th 2008 3:47PM
mass effect says hi
Neebs @ Apr 8th 2008 3:50PM
eve online says hi
then shoots you.
Nicolas Redfern @ Apr 8th 2008 3:54PM
I dunno, 40k has loads of monsters already.
JonFitt @ Apr 8th 2008 4:05PM
Whuh?
Fewer well-known monsters: The Orks and Eldar say hi.
Lack of spellcasting: Psykers say hi.
40k is directly comparable to a fantasy RPG becuase that's its roots. It's all about the stats and chances to hit. Translates perfectly if you ask me.
Although I can't see your average Marine spending days wandering around grinding giant spiders for 20 webs for the Chaplain.
I'd rather see a persistant online RTS than an MMO though.
mandarin14 @ Apr 8th 2008 4:39PM
You really dont know much about Warhammer 40k if you think theres no spellcasting....
Better read up, or at least wait for the game to come out before you open your mouth.
mundox @ Apr 8th 2008 5:35PM
The warhammer mmo is based on it's fantasy version not the sci-fi one (wh40k).
It's all about swords, axes, and magic. And IMHO that's total fail, they should have made that mmo on the 40k universe, there are enough fantasy crap mmos out there.
"Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (officially abbreviated as WAR[5]) is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy setting."

The Draenei say hi from their spaceship. Also, my hunter-engineer with his sniper rifle and robot pets, etc... they say hi too.
Roofie @ Apr 8th 2008 3:50PM
Extra 0 much?
Neebs @ Apr 8th 2008 3:50PM
it's over nine thousaaaaaand
Blazur @ Apr 8th 2008 4:41PM
I think they're getting ahead of themselves and already talking about the sequel, Warhammer 400 thousand.
Shagittarius @ Apr 8th 2008 3:55PM
I'm peakin dude.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Apr 8th 2008 4:37PM
I told you that was some good shit. Worth every penny.
343 Guilty Fart @ Apr 8th 2008 5:13PM
Seriously, that was my first thought too. Can't wait to get off work so I can go peaking as well.
AlphaOneZero @ Apr 8th 2008 3:58PM
Sci Fi MMO's are definetly superior to the magic and sorcery etc etc ones, imho. I absolutely loved planetside, even with its clunky controls and interface, and i played tabula rasa a hell of a lot longer than i did with WoW, but that game sucks so much i suppose thats not much of a feat. (would attach flame sheild but all WoW fanboys are probably playing it atm anyway).
And 40k is the pincale of sci fi badassery, as long as the MMO is partly shooter like TabRas then its gonna rule.
Shagittarius @ Apr 8th 2008 4:04PM
I hate Sci-Fi, Kung Fu, Military MMOS. They all suck IMHO.
PointyThings @ Apr 8th 2008 4:18PM
Yes, but what about World of Starcraft?
neil @ Apr 8th 2008 6:27PM
"Yes, but what about World of Starcraft?"
It would suck. Starcraft absolutely, and 100% ripped off 40k. The story and rich background of the 40k Universe has few equals, and Starcraft is a poor man's 40k anyway.
PointyThings @ Apr 8th 2008 10:20PM
Korea would disagree, sir.
Gurei @ Apr 8th 2008 4:36PM
Im still waiting for that MMO that is GOOD and also lets you have a life.
Seriously.
BTW I played, wow almost 3 and it was a great game but that greatnes has faded more and more, after the BC rush was over it just wasnt tha fun to log everyday.
Plus, the overupdative ways of blizzard and seasonal arena, plus PVE PVP divide made it fill empy.
jmf @ Apr 11th 2008 5:36PM
you should check out eve, you dont have to play all the time to skill up and there is a lot to skill, just gotta focus
mandarin14 @ Apr 8th 2008 4:37PM
Im curious if Starcraft comes out with an MMO by the time War 40k comes out.
Blazur @ Apr 8th 2008 4:45PM
I think Diablo is more likely to be an MMO over StarCraft. Just imagine running through heaven and hell from a first person perspective fighting hordes of demons.
Still, something tells me the unannounced MMO they're working on will be a new IP.
Rayonic @ Apr 8th 2008 4:52PM
Wouldn't the subscription numbers have to go down for it to have peaked? Yet WoW keeps getting bigger, with a huge surge every expansion pack.
Joshua @ Apr 8th 2008 5:03PM
With Wrath coming out i doubt that WoW is slowing down anytime soon.
If anything its getting bigger and bigger by the day
mundox @ Apr 8th 2008 5:36PM
It's fantasy MMO not a sci-fi one (unfortunately).
Schmobu @ Apr 8th 2008 5:42PM
I doubt World of Warcraft has peaked, and if Warhammer even slightly thinks they have a chance they should lay of their crack, why the only way anyone could ever beat world of warcraft is if they had a leveling system that had an affect like doing drugs.
Desco @ Apr 8th 2008 5:46PM
They never actually said it would be an MMO *RPG* did they? Personally, I'd love to see a 40k MMO be more like a persistent RTS, not another damned MMO RPG. A 40k game would be much more appropriate if players assumed the role of a unit commander (who can strangely never die) accepting missions, possibly along with other units, from the Imperial or Eldar commanders... Between missions would be traveling on galactic maps (instead of walking around on foot) recruiting, training, and healing the troops, and buying or repairing equipment.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 8th 2008 9:32PM
Wrath of the Lich King isn't out yet.
Masher @ Apr 9th 2008 6:09AM
Arrgghhhh I hope WoW dies real quick so we don't have to wait so long for the next generation of MMO's

40k should be a *rpg* because a rts would be like me playing dawn of war ... online... HOLY CRAP I CAN DO THAT ALREADY. It needs to be an rpg because the premis would rock if they were able to break away from the random generated shots and make it a 1st/3rd person game. not to mention how bad ass it would be to have major 1st/3rd person world battles with ships and ground forces where you had hundreads of people trying to work as a unit to conquor or defend a planet. they could do so uch with this game, just by taking AoC's seige guild battles and making them more expansive... imagin if you will teams of 20 taking out massive ships and a hundread or so players on the ground in small groups trying to win a massive week or month long battle.. man i would jiz my pants if a mmo like that would come out.
Jim @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:00PM
40K should definitely not be a RPG, it should be a FPS. There are absolutely no MMOFPSs out there except Planetside. If they did this, they would not only fill the huge gap but satisfy those of us that are 40K fans. Pointing, clicking and watching a fight? Not my idea of fun.
