OK, we've said it before, but other than the constant threat of dying, one of the things we know troops serving in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from is boredom. So, when Peter Gallagher sent us a tip about his site GamesForHeroes.com, we felt the least we could do was give it some attention.
The Games for Heroes charity, which has a registered donor number with nonprofit MarineParents.com, is simply looking to collect handheld games and systems (Game Boy, DS, PSP), which will be sent to troops serving in a place of war. Information on where to send items or make cash donations can be found on the site. A similar charity called "Fun for our Troops" began last year, but without the portable gaming focus.
We spoke with the 15-year-old Gallagher, who started the charity with his friend, Jack Wilson, and learned the whole concept stemmed from a "Cheer Up the Troops" letter writing campaign he and Jack started with area children while on their spring break. After submitting the letters to MarineParents.com, they found out that one of the most requested items by troops are handheld video game systems. Gallagher explains, "They play PlayStation when they can, but how often do they get TVs? These are 18, 19, 20-year-old kids over there. ... You know, we just want to help out."
Peter's mother, Susan Gallagher, couldn't be happier with what her son is trying to do and assured us he's doing everything by the book. Pssst, multimillion-dollar corporations that read this site, help the kid out. Heck, when we were 15 we never did anything this nice (and definitely not while on break).

most soldiers over there have regular jobs just like you. its strange to think it, but the guy who works in supply in iraq, works from 8am to 5pm, the mechanics have regular work hours, the cooks do as well.
you have infantry, and infantry support. most infantry support work regular hours in iraq.
infantry go out on missions, they are kind of like firemen in that they will be on for 24 hours than off.
no worries, before I got in the mmilitary I had no clue at all as well.

Not to split hairs or anything, but telling someone that their insult "sucks" is probably the most concise way to say "I got nothin'". You win the Brevity Bow Out contest.

I have a bunch of friends either on a tour or coming back from a tour in Afghanistan.(Canadian Army) They themselves don't care about politics much, but they do care about the people out there, and about us back home. They didn't start it, but they're fighting, dying and helping build schools and hospitals just the same.
It doesn't matter if a few have other reasons to be there. If I consider my friends, whom I know well, I know they would rather not have to fight at all. But they go either out of a sense of duty, or the willingness to help those in need. Whether you agree with the reasons for them being there or not, we elected the people who sent them there, and if we can't stand behind the troops themselves, we can always stand in front of them.
And the folks I know there get a big boost from getting this kind of thing even if they can afford it themselves. It's the support they treasure.

First, my position: I despise the Iraq war. It was a criminal act...wait it *is* a criminal operation and I think the president and several others down the line should not be impeached, but arrested and tried for their crimes against this nation and its people.
I also think that any jackwad that pulls "terrorism" from his wah-zoo when the topic gets brought up should immediately be ejected from the conversation for being far to simplistic, ignorant and/or neive to contribute to the topic in any meaningful way.
That being said, I would be the first (edited per 'no attacks' TOS) the likes of Mills and Boom, had I the oppertunity. And I would love someone to take Chris Langston out of his simple little life and have him walk in someone else's shoes for the 30 seconds he could handle it before breaking down and curling up into a fetal position.
First, none of these men and women are "murders" and you should be utterly ashamed for even suggesting it. That is the most disturbing and down-right revolting thing I have read in a very, very long time. Yes, these poor guys and gals are being used. Yes, they are being ordered to commit criminal acts and to act in a manner that is counter-productive to our nation's well being. And you know what? I almost tear up when I think about how lucky I am to have these people who are willing to do this.
It is their sole commitment and obligation to follow the orders given to them. As long as they have followed those order, your labels of "murder" belong somewhere else far, far away. And to suggest that these people somehow has it easy and this effort to get them games is somehow benefitting the benefitted. Man, the ignorance.
When I get home tonight I will be rounding up my kids and collecting all the forgotten handhelds. After I again tell them how horrendous and terrible and unforgiveable this war is, I will teach to them why we should find the greatest joy in sending our soldiers something small and silly that will in some small way make at least one of their days a teeny bit easier.

Hey man, you seem like an intelligent guy. In fact, I agree with most of the comments you made, so what's with the personal attacks? You don't know anything about me or the life that I lead, other than what I have posted in my two previous comments.
I just don't glorify the military. I don't think of them as heroes. They are adults who made a career choice. To me, children dying of cancer or Africans with no access to food seem much more worthy of charity than a fully-grown, capable, American citizen who knew the terms of their employment before they got into it. If I am going to use some of my limited resources to benefit another human being, it's going to be someone with fewer or zero resources, not someone who has their own means to acquire such things.

I'd recommend sending anything from the Call of Duty series or other military games. Wouldn't want the boys getting soft playing Ape Escape or something like that.

I was surprised by the amount of negativity people were giving the troops over seas. Saying it is their fault for choosing a job where you get shot at is ridiculous. Many people join the army because it's the only way they could afford to go to college.
Sure, a soldier could afford to buy his own hand held, but the isn't the point. The point is that you thought about what they were going through, and wanted to help them out. As someone else suggested sending a nice card would produce the same effect.
Some of these ignorant comments really shocked me. People should think over wait they say before typing it.

I served two tours in Iraq so I have a good idea what goes down there. I am also getting tired of people, mostly cowards, who make any stories references to the troops political in nature. If you think it is a bad idea to send handheld gaming systems to the troops fine, than send it to some sick kid with cancer. I rather have someone do that anyways. But if you are ashamed that you don't have the balls to serve your country than don't take it out on us. Take your comments to some other website. Maybe than we can actually leave space for some actual gaming comments.
