Thanks to Batman Begins, we're now all familiar with the concept of "rebooting" a series -- ignoring one or more of its previous installments to start over with a clean slate. Sega's apparently familiar with the concept as well, as Sonic Unleashed has "no relation" to either Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3 and 360, or Sonic and the Secret Rings, and will instead be more like a Sonic Adventure 3, only with more hulkhogs.
Official Nintendo Magazine talked with lead designer Yoshihisa Hashimoto about the direction of the new title, and learned that the team went back to square one with both the design and engine for the game. The game is said to be comparable to the aging Sonic Adventure games, albeit with a few new tricks and hopefully improved platforming. Regarding the hulkhog, Hashmito reveals that Sonic's altered form controls more slowly (duh), but can knock objects out of the way rather than dodging, and propels himself forward Donkey Kong-style with massive forearms used to swing across the ground.
We're all for rebooting the series, but we personally hope that Unleashed shares more in common with Sonic's pre-Adventure titles, rather than the character-laden, awkward-camera experiences in the Dreamcast outings.

He-he... Watch the flaming fanbois... ^_^
Well, new start is better than endless stream of rehashes of sequels of rereleases of a game about a looser plumber.

Both Rivals and Riders had potential but horrid programming and the few amount of levels not to mention lack of online gameplay killed both.

I'm getting the feeling that Sonkey-Kong (© 2008 Skreehunter) part of the game won't be nearly as fun as normal Sonic part.

Sega gets some really big fish sometimes, give them another chance, have faith, hopefully they would have learnt from thier mistakes.

I'm not likin' the idea of an edgy Wolf Sonic, but i like the other return to basics
However, the last two games have all been coined as "Series Reboots"

The best 3D sonic game was the original Sonic Adventure. There's no debating that. No debating at all. Which means this probably won't be as good as they say. We can hope it'll be good though.

Hey wait a minute....if they're gonna ignore the last two sonic console games...well about ignoring:
Sonic Heroes
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Riders 1 and 2
Sonic Rivals
Seems like we forgot alot here...and that's why I'm still not excited about this game. Oh, and it was me who called for a batman begins-style reboot of the series.

Hmm this gives me some hope. Let's hope they get rid of the many useless characters the series has acquired.

I'm interested in this but I'm also smart enough to know Sega will probably let us down. However maybe they'll surprise us.

*types again - stupid comment system*
I thought secret rings was pretty great... infact it was probably my favorite sonic game ever, maybe even more than any of the 2d ones. Sure it had a few flaws (initially sluggish controls and reversing) but I think a sequel could have ironed those out easily and been awesome.
I kinda enjoyed the original sonic on the genesis, but to be honest I always found the 2d sonics kinda schitzophrenic. I never knew if i was supposed to be racing through the levels (which was most fun) or exploring to find rings and secret areas. Exploring was dull... but racing through felt like I was missing stuff.
Secret rings did a much better job of making the speed fun, and doing differnt routes through the levels meant you could both go fast, and not feel you'd missed everything.
Secret Rings 2 please!!

It's not really so much of a reboot of the series and deleting these two games considering Sonic Next Gen was reset itself at the end and Sonic and The Secret Rings took place inside a different world and the only true sonic character there was Sonic anyway, so these games technically disregarded themselves before this one was created......

should have put this in my prior post but just thought of it, it being like another sonic adventure title would actually be a good thing especially if it means avoiding another Shadow the Hedgehog (game) type fiasco...

I hated Sonic'06 for its control mostly. There were segments where the game tries to help you stay on course, during those times a small push on the stick gets you nothing, so if you wanna move left a little to grab some rings your out of luck. So you push the stick a little, nothing happens, little more, nothing happens, little more, and.. BOOM your going mach 2 off the ledge and there goes another life. Whats sad is alot of the level design is cool and most of my other gripes with the game are purely preference(I don't like the slide).
I just wish they'd spend less time figuring out what the next hedgehog with superform(that rivals sonic) should look like, and more time polishing controls and camera. Add some depth to sonic(maybe swimming, or a couple combo style attacks) instead of adding 5 new characters every game. Stop using 1 button for all the actions, new controllers have like 16 damn buttons even the Wii has enough buttons to seperate jump, spindash, lightring dash(which I dont care for but if your gonna use it make sure I cant accidently bounce straight down to my doom).

...unless it's changed from that leaked footage, it's basically sonic rush in full 3d.
how is "boost-chainer the MUNKY-hedgehog" similar to the sonic adventure games, sonic team?
I can't comment much on secret rings since I haven't played it, but what I do know about it doesn't endear it to me at all. as to Sonic '06, well... why are people suprised that it falls out of continuity? *the ending prevents the story itself from ever happening*.
At this point it doesn't look like they're gonna make it to sonic adventure's level, but who knows... maybe they'll pull a hare out of a hat.
