Holy crap, the first 2 races (as far as I am in the video), the player gets completely screwed over by things he can't even stop and doesn't get 1st.

That looks amazingly annoying, and it's a very good thing Grand Theft Auto 4 comes out the next day.

Baby Park is the Final Destination of Mario Kart. Incredibly boring and annoying track that gets picked too often by snaker kiddies when I'm playing MKDS online.

Waluigi Pinball, however, I was really hoping for. Oh well - some of these tracks manage to reach Waluigi Pinball levels of awesomeness. Koopa Cape FTW.

I always felt Baby Park was MORE chaotic than your standard Mario Kart track, playing there on 150cc/Mirror Mode with all the items flying all over the place, lapping the guys in 8th so that their uber items were directly affecting the front of the pack, dropped items all over the place

It created that feeling of pure chaos that is hard to emulate

That sounds good, but any other stage. I can't stand Final Destination. Battlefield, Smashville, Norfair, well anywhere else would be great. Norfair's actually my favorite stage 'cuz of that awesome instrumental theme of the same name that it boasts.

I dunno, I'd just rather have another awesome stage like Waluigi Pinball, Wario Coliseum, Airship Fortress, etc. represented rather than the blandness that was Baby Park.

This does look leaps and bounds better then the travisty that was double dash. I also like the level designs.

Still doesent look as good as the n64 version but good none the less. Things im not liking are half-pipes, and the go-kart designs. I think they look too long and retarded like the ones from double dash.

I never really liked the track designs in Mario Kart 64. Fun game nonetheless, but some just felt too open and uninspired. This game is on the opposite spectrum if you ask me - the new track designs completely trump the old.

Mario Kart Double Dash is in fact my favorite MK... it requires a lot of skill, and the tracks are awesome.

The sense of speed is great too.

woah you guys are strange. MK 64 blew the crap out of MK DD. We played both games quite alot here locally since its an everyone game and the n64 one is prefered by all. We even tried 6 player MK DD over lan, and that was less fun then MK64.

Despite all the bickering over online and roster's and GTAIV for some reason, this actually looks like its a nice compilation of stages. the speed doesnt seem any slower than double dash as far as these videos go from what ive seen, as for the visuals they looks pretty good considering its keeping at a steady framerate with no dropdown. im just really curious as to how its gonna control with the steering wheel, ive never been really good at using sterring wheels in games or in arcades for that matter but id still like to try it on there. as for whos gonna be picking up what whenever this releases, who cares? im gonna end up owning both games so why in the fuck is everyone comparing it with a GTA game, retarded fuckin fanboyism....

I never realized before just how much I prefer snaking. Now the game just plays like a very bland arcade title with frustrating "chance" thrown in for undue aggravation.

They've apparently sucked all the skill and determinism out of the single player game.

In games with rubberband AI, speed is never an issue (just avoiding the hell out of everything), things like snaking are only effective in multiplayer games. And for that I'm glad they removed it, it's an irritating mechanic.

It's an arcade racing game. Aggressive "catch-up" is how you keep the field densely packed. Games like this are not about skill. They are all about the illusion of narrow victory.

If you think this is bad, trust me, you should never try Turbo Outrun. I swear the AI car was glued to your bumper, passing you within the last 2 seconds no matter how perfectly you drove for the whole stage. That game pissed me off to no end, especially with the "final blows" they gave you right in front of the finish line.

Mario Kart Wii looks pretty well-balanced for this genre, but nothing particularly special (I never could get into Mario Kart). Load times could use some improvement.

Is it really that bad?

Well, first off this game looks unbelievably annoying. Even before playing the game, the high pitched "SUPER MARIO KART WIIIIIIIIII" would probably persuade me not to play the game at all and definitely make me embarrassed to pitch 50 bucks on a game that makes the Wiggles seem mature. Even Yoshi's voice "acting" in this game makes me sick. To be that annoying, you have to try. Just like SSBB, they cranked up the annoying to 11.
Let me preface the rest by saying that the last Mario Kart I played was 64...and I loved 64. This is Mario Kart 64 with some expansion pack material. This is not a sequel...this is brood wars to starcraft. The sad thing is...unlike a lot of games that you can say the same thing to...this game is an expansion pack to a game that came out over 10 years ago. See the difference between this and other games that come out a year or two after the last iteration? And like Brawl...the additions that make this game different than 64 seem unbalanced and needless and stupid. I watched the first two races this guy recorded and twice he was ripped off of 1st place by cheap new additions to the franchise. A super spike shell that insta-hits? really? REALLY!? Why the hell are the tracks so wide? Is there a secret semi-truck mode we haven't seen yet? Is it so the CPU can speed up for no reason and pass you without any real reason?
Also, for those saying this game's online ISN'T gonna suck, you're either naive or just new to Nintendo or something. There's a 1% chance I'm wrong and I hope I am. But I'm willing to bet this game's gonna lag HARD. It's gonna be unplayable online therefore within a week, nobody's gonna be playing online. Friend codes = nobody bothers. Like SSBB, nobody wants to wait 30 minutes for someone to join them...instead, they'll just play... and if you just play, you can't be joined or notified when someone is online. And for those of you who thought reviewers did mention that online stunk...they didn't bother to detail WHY other than it was "a little laggy"...none of them went into detail to why ssbb was a broken game on release and they will ignore almost all the negatives to MKWii also. The negative whiplash and press for reviewing an over hyped nostalgic game far out weighs the integrity of honesty.
The wheel looks like fun and will add at least some kind of learning curve to the game. I'm sure the game will be fun...as its source material was one of the most enjoyable experiences in game history...but honestly, that's all this game has going for itself.

The blue shells have been around for several MK iterations - MKDD was the first I believe.
The tracks are that wide as the field is 12 racers rather than 8 now.
MKDS had online play that was fine. I'm sure that as I've played on Live since then, the online will seem lacking a bit, but it's a method of playing it against humans rather than CPU AI, which is fine by me.
The only review I've read so far is in Edge, and they gave it a 6. They hated on Double Dash, though, which I loved, so I'm picking this up tomorrow. And playing it tomorrow.

Joystiq, hows about a MKWii friends code list as you did for SSBB? And I mean now, as the game is out now JP and tomorrow EU. Not waiting until US launch.
