A day after the BBC announced a version of its iPlayer streaming video service for the Wii, an obvious follow-up question arises: "Why isn't a similar service available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well?" A partial answer from BBC Future and Technology Group Coordinator Erik Huggers, who said in a BBC's dot.life blog that Sony and Microsoft weren't willing to open up their infrastructures to the iPlayer. "If you want to get on the PlayStation or Xbox, they want control of the look, the feel and the experience; they want it done within their shop, and their shop only," Huggers said.
The BBC blogger uses this as a leaping-off point to declare that the Wii's deal with the BBC "makes something of a mockery" of the multimedia capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PS3. Never mind that the Wii can't even play DVDs (much less Blu-ray discs) or that the system offers no way to download video for permanent, offline viewing. According to the BBC's blogger, Nintendo is "bridging the gap between the web and the TV" in a way that its competitors aren't.
Regardless, the implication that Sony and Microsoft are unwilling to accommodate online video outside the walled garden of their narrow, profit-generating shop services is a little upsetting. The beauty of having a machine connected to the internet should be the ability to access the wide array of free content on that internet, not just the opportunity to buy things from the console maker and its partners.

no one's worried about laggy, grainy and plain shitty looking video when 360 and ps3 can play high quality HD video perfectly.
and it's just the BBC anyway. It's not like they're exclusively streaming HBO content or anything.

Right. That grainy bad video is why YouTube is sooo unpopular.

I call Bullshit on BBC's part. On the same blog, they tell us how they had to modify BBC iPlayer to serve the Wii's Opera browser, which only supports Flash7.
Guess what, the PS3's browser (which allows you to visit ANY site) also supprts Flash7.
So, off the back of the Wii work, they simply have to detect PS3 browser (easy to detect via simply browser version javascript) and serve up that exact same Wii content.
Looks like BBC got busted. I have registered a complain with OfComm, as as a UK licence fee payer, I feel I should not be fed BC bullshit.

Hey BBC!! listen to this fanboys!! they don't care about your exclusive deal with Nintendo!! Don't you know they have their Wiis collecting dust for months since they think is a piece of shit and doesn't even have HD?? yet some are angry you don't bendover for Microsoft and Sony?? you are missing on the all the single-30-year-olds demographic that love gaming (and probably don't even watch one BBC program).

Funny how the Wii without any media capabilities is getting this kind of exclusive opportunities yet the big guys are getting a slap in the face. lol...

I wouldn't exactly call not streaming the BBC a "slap in the face".

Every kid says they have a Wii collecting dust, why don't they sell it and get something else? People will buy at a high price...

Now if we can only get Porn games on the Wii my life would be complete. Think about it: motion sensors... accelerometers.... attachments to the wiimote..... oh what fun we could all have.

What stupid neo-geek came up with the word "interwebs"? Also what dipshit came up with Wii Sports machine? I have a PS3 and a Wii, but the PS3 ain't getting played until June (MGS4, there's nothing but cack on it at the moment so 1 game machine is what I can call PS3, you stupid bias anus Krazy Ken. But I won't stoop to your level, I'm a fan of games, not the consoles and can't wait till i get a 360 so I can playing games like Gears 2 and Dead Rising. Being bias to a console just makes you a loser. I don't care what comebacks you have, cause at the end of the day your just a wasteman.

You are right, you will go right past my level and appear underneath Fernandos toejam.
I am a fan of games, NOT consoles. It just so happens that 90% of the games I am a fan of will show up on the PS3.

Of course they want control. They likely want a cut too. Which is why the Netflix deal floated on the net seems absurd too.

I get the BBC though a bit of metal strapped to my roof! Really, why would you really want this service?

Surely the walled garden isn't a big shock? Its pretty obvious that microsoft has been trying to create a "Microsoft Internet" where they have control and profit from all the content since Windows 95. MSN, in its original incarnation, was essentially an attempt at a MS Live on the PC... but no-one went for it. They've tried again several times.
Why do you think they have essentially abandoned the PC for Games and Video, Live is the control they have always craved.
As for a set top box... HD and saving/downloading shows are nice features to have... but a simple streaming set top box isreally all that a lot of people need.
Still, I'd be amazed if the iPlayer didn't appear on the 360 and PS3 in the near future...

To the few who said Nintendo doesn't care about what gets on their consoles, I think that is simply inconsistent with the company's history. Furthermore, I think I would trust the BBC to decorate the interior of my home, for crying out loud! It's the freakin' BBC!
