Nintendo tops 2007's Develop 100 list
And what such a prestigious achievement amounts to is, well, an awfully large amount of money. You see, the Develop 100 aims to rank "the world's most successful game studios" based on the revenues earned by their products at UK retail. Leaping to the top of the list for 2007 is Nintendo, its titles earning £129.83 million ($256 million) and boasting a significant lead over the £68.78 million ($136 million) belonging to number 2 producer, EA Canada.Other notable studios in the top ten include Ubisoft Montreal with £52.17 million, Konami with £41.67 million and Maxis, which raked in £36.84 million. You'll also spot Infinity Ward with £39.6 million and Bungie with £31.45 million, both of which coasted in on a single game.
[Final "million" word count: 9. 10 if you count that "million." Oh, great, now it's 11.]

WiiSports (u know the one that comes with the system) is counted as software...as is WiiPlay (which we all know is bought for the Wiimote) So if you take those out you drop total software sales by what 30+ million?
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 10th 2008 11:18PM
Still, there are far more third party million sellers on the Wii than on the PS3... a lot more.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 10th 2008 11:21PM
There are 25 Wii titles with over a million (24 if you exclude WiiPlay, not WiiSports, because its actually sold apart in JP).
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 10th 2008 11:25PM
Wii Sports, Wii Play, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros, Mario and Sonic, Big Brain Academy, Super Paper Mario, WarioWare, Guitar Hero, WiiFit, Resident Evil 4, Mario Strikers, Carnival Games, Rayman, Metroid Prime 3, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Resident Evil UC, Lego Star Wars, Red Steel, Rayman 2 and MySims.
So, the Wii does sell software. So, please, shut the fuck up.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 10th 2008 11:32PM
50 cent sold over a million as well, but it still sucked ass
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 10th 2008 11:38PM
The only sucky games on that list are both Rayman, Carnival Games and Red Steel. The rest of the list is pretty decent.
PS3 has 11 million sellers, Motorstomr, CoD4, Resistance, Assassins Creed, Uncharted, PES, FIFA, Need for Speed, Guitar Hero, Devil May Cry, and Ratchet.
So, you want to take out PES, FIFA and Need for Speed too?

Listen Fernandos
I never said the Wii does not sell software. Read my post.
And just because something sells alot, does NOT make it good.

Just a quick comment: My name is spelled Fernando, without the S. It is part of my latino heritage. Please do not disrespect my culture. Would you like it if I butchered up your name?
Anni @ Apr 11th 2008 12:20AM
Actually, Fernando's point is a relevant counterpoint to a common Wii criticism that I have seen posted several times on Joystiq.
Not everything is about you, Ken. :-/

@ fernando
Killjebus thinks he's clever by referring to nintendo supporters as "Fernandos" as in the plural of fernando
I'm not trying to defend the troll by any means, just explaining his train of thought.
mike @ Apr 11th 2008 1:39AM
woah woah.. stop the presses here. Or at least your comment button fernando. No need to reply to yourself 3 times.
No let me say something here. First off, the fernandos in his name is not refering to nintnedo fans as fernandos, its spoofing to the famous transformers line, "Transformers, robots in disguise". The S is from robotS.
Second, I have to agree with killjebus on his original comment. The wii sports and wii play DO count as software titles sold by nintendo. And many people buy wii play for the controller only. I know my brother did. You see, the wii play pack OFTEN goes on sale, for the same price as the controller (and actually sometimes even $10 LESS then the standalone controller). So basically you can nab wiiplay for FREE. My brother bought all 3 of his spare wiimotes with wiiplay so he could get 3 free wiiplays. He sold 2 and kept 1. That right there is 3 software purchases from 1 person in that $256 million and he didnt even buy a game.
Im not gonna debate weather or not nintendo would still be first place or not on this chart without counting those as software sales, but I sure bet the number wouldnt be such a large lead over EA canada.
Which brings me to mikes final thought (much better then Jerry's final thought). Canada makes great video games. Its what we do to make up for all the shitty movies we make, which is all of them except the movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755/.

WiiSports Machine...Fernandos in disguise PSN: Killjebus @ Apr 10th 2008 11:13PM
This is kinda missleading.
Nintendo is grouped into ONE studio, meanwhile...EA is split up, Ubisoft is split up, SONY with its 15 studios is split up.
Not a very accurate report if you ask me.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 10th 2008 11:17PM
Nintendo is splited in several studios too:
Sora Ltd. (SSBB), Intelligent Systems, Monolith Software, Game Freak, HAL, Retro Studios, etc...
iofthestorm @ Apr 11th 2008 12:01AM
Sorry, but I think the facts agree with Fernando this time. I'm pretty sure the attach rates on Wii are still lower, but the sheer volume makes up for that. Also, SSBB probably bumped up the attach rate quite a bit.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Apr 11th 2008 12:28AM
I think the attach rates are pretty good, a lot of people I know that have Wii's have quite a few games to go with them. I have 21 wii games last time I checked.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 11th 2008 12:36AM
And dissed AGAIN!
iofthestorm @ Apr 11th 2008 1:56AM
@curtis: The attach rates for people like us who frequent gaming sites might be high (I've got 5-6 games, forgot how many lol) but for a lot of Nintendo's new expanded market Wii Sports could be all they ever play, and maybe Wii Play and Wii Fit when that comes out. Anecdotal evidence really isn't enough in cases like this, especially for groups that have high concentrations of gamers.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Apr 11th 2008 4:23AM
True, but as my post said I was talking about other people I know that have one as well. My grandpa has like 6 games for his...I think he has some fishing game, and I don't even know what else.

Funny, that is basically what I said in my post yet the Fernandos (Scmil is right) fall all over themselves stoking eachother off saying I got dissed and dissed again. Well Fernandos, I am happy you were able to diss me. Maybe someday by the grace of the Underpants Gnomes...I can be as COOL as you guys and diss random people on a gaming site so I can pat myself on the back.
Did you guys get beat up every day in HS? Because if you went to mine...you would be picked on w/o mercy and those of the female gender would just point and laugh. I still have a hard time believing that you guys take this shit SOOOO FRAKING Seriously.
Whatever floats your boat ladies.
If every WSM game was rated 100 I STILL would not care about them or play them.
For me, Nintendos 1st party software is OLD and BORING and the 3rd party software is KRAP. So what if alot of LEMMINGS go out and buy it, IT STILL does not make it good.
Enough of this, GO Sox and GO OTHER TEAM!!!

I can only say that the Wii is for the causal and by that means it is full of useless mini games.
Curmeo @ Apr 11th 2008 1:42AM
Nintendonald's you are no more the respectable Nintendo of the past. overcharging on decade old hardware. dumbing down gameplay for your precious non-gamer/casual audience. not providing proper online funtionality with the excuse of keeping it "safe, friendly, and easy" when we all know you really are just maximizing your profits. fooling people into thinking Wii Fit will make them slimmer or Brain Age will make them smarter.
Nintendonald's has become the plague of the game industry similar to how McDonald's is the plague of the food industry.
when Reggie said Nintendonald's is now a "and" company as opposed to an "or" company, he really meant Nintendonald's will focus 75 percent on the non-gamers/casuals and 25 percent on the hardcore gamers who kept them from going bankrupt during the N64 and GameCube days.
to hardcore Nintendonald's lovers: keep supporting your beloved company. one day you will realise your company is ruining the entire industry when more and more publishers and developers shift focus from hardcore games to casual games, as we are seeing happening now with Nintendonald's, Ubisoft, EA, and others.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 11th 2008 2:16AM

"overcharging on decade old hardware."
...so are you saying the Wii is 4 Nintendo 64's taped together?
Curmeo @ Apr 11th 2008 3:30AM
to the retard Vegeta: funny you couldnt think of any counterarguements in you reply to my post. ha ha. oh wow.
to Curtis: do i need to remind you that the DS is based on the N64 hardware? or that the GameCube was released 8 years ago?
Kite @ Apr 11th 2008 6:49AM
Hey curmeo, welcome in economics 101
Let's revise yesterdays lessons:
- A successfull strategy is to m... profits while keeping costs as l... as possible.
- In order to sell your product to a large amount of people, you need to enlarge your target g...
- Marketing revolves around d.... (Deception).
Not only nintendo is doing this. Every business is trying to, as they should. Unless you want to open a new shop that doesn't care about profits but just gives stuff away.
Now we got that out of the way, onto another statement.
Has it occurred to you that YOU might be the one who is wrong on the 'casuals will ruin the market' nonsense. Maybe later when you grow up and can't spend as much time as you want behind your games you will notice that everyone becomes a casual gamer at one point. You got your hardcore fix, why start to whine?
The industry is adapting to this new market, maybe you should try to adapt too. Unless you are too busy kicking and screaming because you don't like a product group that is at least 10 times your size.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Apr 11th 2008 3:16PM
to Curmeo: do i need to remind you that the gamecube was released September 2001? or that a decade is 10 years?
Curmeo @ Apr 12th 2008 1:12AM
to Curtis: no you dont, because i wasnt specifically refering to the Wii system when i said "overcharging on decade old hardware". it was more of a general statement to show Nintendonald's latest systems are based on really old hardware, infact some even more than a decade old.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 XBL - supapaypamawio @ Apr 12th 2008 5:04AM
...or you could just admit you were wrong and that they are overcharging on 7 year old hardware.
Curmeo @ Apr 12th 2008 6:11AM
to Curtis:
N64 hardware isnt 7 year old hardware. GBA hardware isnt 7 year old hardware. DS is based on more than a decade old hardware. and like i said before, my original statement did not refer specifically to Wii. infact, i didnt even mention the word "Wii". perhaps you should quit trying to make a mountain out of a molehill or in other words stop nitpicking.
