Sony KONPYUTAENTATEINMENTOJAPAN has announced that the revamped PlayStation Store will open its virtual doors on Tuesday, April 15th. Update: SCEA has confirmed that loud-mouthed, spendthrift American PS3s will be allowed to roam the aisles on the same day, as will systems from around the globe.
The store revamp will be facilitated by enhanced firmware (version 2.30) and should mark the return of weekly content updates which have been absent since April 3rd. Once the more user-friendly interface is up and running, PS3 owners will be able to download fun things like Warhawk's Broken Mirror expansion and the 'Still Alive' DLC for Rock Band.

I own a Wii, 360 and I'm saving up for a PS3, but whenever I see something about the Playstation Store my first thought is always, "Oh, they're selling stuff online? That's cute."

But doesn't the 360 and Wii both sale things online? So what's so different about the Playstation store?

I don't know, really. That's just the first thing that comes to mind. I have the same reaction when I see a group of kids selling lemonade and there's a Jamba Juice in the background.

I gotta say, though, that Sony does something with the Playstation Store that Microsoft does not do yet: They sell major game releases online. Warhawk, Gran Turismo Prologue, and SOCOM coming up - pretty impressive support of the 'next retail model.'
Now, about that XMB messaging and chat...

@Ill
I remember hearing on the 1up Yours interview with MS's Aaron Greenberg that they're also looking at revamping the XBLM interface, so that's good news for 360 owners too.
Can't wait to try this out though. I hated the old design of the PSN store.

While it's a cool idea to sell games online, since they take up so much space nobody would have enough room for more than a few games, especially the 20GB owners and even the 40B owners to some extent. Considering each Blu-Ray disc holds 50 GB, more than the size of my hard drive in my 40 GB PS3, they can't ever sell games that fill up an entire disc online, and they can't expect everyone to upgrade to larger hard drives because a lot of people don't have the technical prowess required to even just change a hard drive (considering you have to have another external drive, formatted to FAT 32, to back up and restore from if you want to save your current data) and most people don't want to spend more money on a hard drive to save games onto, then pay for the game, when they can just spend the money on the game on a disc. Basically I don't see this system working for PS3 games, but for PSX games it's not a bad idea, considering you can't find a lot of PSX games today and they certainly don't carry them at your local Target/Wal-Mart/whatever. But Microsoft is doing the same thing with their Xbox originals, so it's kind of a moot point there.

What are talking about? Sony already offers full games for download online and none of them are 40GB. Who wants to download a 40GB game. GT Prologue is 1.9GB, Warhawk is least than a Gig and Tekken DR Online is about a Gig. That's three full games all under 2 gigs.

I believe the PS store needs more FREE DEMOS a la XBOX LIVE. XBOX LIVE has gotten me to buy more Mini Apps than I would have ever imagined just for the fact that the demo leaves you wanting more. Although after you download the full game you only play it for a couple of days or so but their Mission is Accomplished. Sony's PS Store should learn from that aspect. I believe the PS Store looks more like the revamped 360 Marketplace. Bring HD STREAMING and I'll visit the PS Store more often.

you know you can buy those pre-paid credit cards at grocery stores and stuff right? they work the same as a PSN card would (or any other consoles card for that matter). sure it's not official but it's essentially the same thing.
hell at my local mall you can buy a gift card (for the whole mall) and the put it on a debit card. you can go to the website and activate it and make purchases anywhere, including online. thankfully i have a real debit card now but i used to do that when i didnt want to bum my parents card.

that certainly does look more sleek but i didnt have a huge problem with the first one honestly. only thing that irked me was when the icons wouldnt load sometimes and the mouse-like navigation (hopefully that's all fixed now though)

As a PS3 and Xbox360 owner, every time I see Sony updating something with the XMB or with the Playstation store, or anything involving their online service, I just ask, why didnt they just copy MS's model. It works, its successful, and after a couple game conventions of gloating and bragging about how Sony copied them, MS would move on and so would everyone else.
The fact is that every update they make only moves them closer and closer to what MS are already doing with the Xbox360, its just taking forever to get there when they could have started off right in the first place.
The first thing I thougt when I heard about the store update was...THANK GOODNESS!!! I'm sick of searching forever on the playstation store just to find a frickin' wallpaper or game video, or whatever. Basically if you didn't get something as soon as it hit the store, it was nearly impossible to find without a good 15-20 minutes of searching.
Now, when I actually got to see the pictures of the update, the first thing I thought was, reminds me of the marketplace on my Xbox360...THANK GOODNESS!!!
Sony, don't be ashamed to copy MS if they're doing something better than you, true gamers don't care who did what first, as long as it makes gaming easier for them. And making your store and online service more like the Xbox360 with definitely improve things for PS3 gamers.
