Ask Joystiq remembers the Dreamcast
Although we skimmed a little bit on this week's Ask Joystiq, we'll be back in full force next Friday! If you have any burning questions, unsolved gaming mysteries, or just a desire for musings from our knowledgeable cadre of writers, drop us a line at ask AAT joystiq DAWT com (and yes, we write it that way for a reason).
Q: In January of 2007 you reported that three new games would be coming out for the Dreamcast: Last Hope, Trigger Heart Excelica and Karous. What is the status of these games? Are there any more Dreamcast games coming our way?
-Wonderflex
A: In short, the status of these games is: they're out in Japan. Last Hope hit on Jan. 31, Trigger Heart Excelica came in on Feb. 22, and Karous was released on March 8. Dreamcast owners can search for the limited-run games through importers, but non-Dreamcast owners have options too -- Trigger Heart Excelica recently hit Xbox Live Arcade, and Karous is now available for the Wii in Japan (Wikipedia currently lists a PS2 version of Last Hope, but we couldn't find any other evidence that it's even planned).
We couldn't find any evidence of new retail Dreamcast games being planned, but Dreamcast Scene and DCEmu continue to update with plenty of homebrew games and apps. Sure, most of these freebie releases don't have the polish or appeal of a retail release, but some are good enough to get ported to the DS. Good hunting.

chris @ Apr 11th 2008 7:45PM
still have mine. 1 imported and 1 US version. i still think the VMU was freakin' brilliant, and someone needs to incorporate the idea of it into nextgen controllers.
Jeramy @ Apr 13th 2008 12:59AM
the vmu had soooo much potential. nfl 2k made some use of it, but most games didn't really take advantage of it
Tranando @ Apr 11th 2008 8:10PM
Ahh, I remember the Dreamcast. The PS2 killed it dead, so the annoyed owners all bought 360's and tried to return the favor (and failed misrably).
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 11th 2008 8:17PM
I dont know how it failed... until today, 360 is beating the PS3 both in games and in sales.
The day the PS3 outsell the 360, then you can talk. And dont make excuses about the year difference... still the 360 is beating the PS3.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 11th 2008 8:20PM
Just remember... the PS3 is still in third place... no matter if the PS3 is outselling now the 360 with a difference of 30,000 a week. Give me a break... at this rate, it will take years for the PS3 to catch the PS3.
So, Sales in resume: First Wii, Second 360, distant third PS3.
Or are you going to deny that?
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 11th 2008 8:30PM
-Wii: 24 million
-360: 18 million
-PS3: 12 million
Do you need more data?
Moofree @ Apr 11th 2008 8:32PM
12 million vs 18 million isn't "distant third"
By those numbers, the 360 is "distant second" behind the Wii.
Who cares about hardware sales numbers! I sure don't!
No more data!
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 11th 2008 8:42PM
A distant third from the first place, obviously. =p
Myke @ Apr 11th 2008 8:52PM
Ah, I remember the Dreamcast. I got that instead of waiting for "dolphin", which was reveiled later as the Gamecube (happy I made that decision). I was always a big Sega supported until Sega stop making hardware so I went the PS2 cause even though the first Xbox was appealing to me, i still thought it was dumb that if you wanted to play DVDs, you HAD to buy the remote kit.
@ Fernando
So what if the PS3 is beating the 360 by 30K? Its still beating it. A win is still a win, no matter by how many points are w/ regarding to this, consoles sold. The PS3 is doing better and better. You can't deny that. No matter how much you hate Sony or the crap you talk that pretty much annoys a lot of people with. You're being very stubborn and very guilble if you think the PS3 WONT eventually outsell the 360 in total world-wide sales. Face it, the 360 is dead in JP. In PAL, the PS3 will most likely sell more copies of GTA IV regardless, of the 360 having "DLC". Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to Gears2 and NG2 and probably i'll have a 360 by that time if the failure rate is decreasing. Hands down, the PS3 has the better software line-up this year (as last year was ALL 360) and if you deny it, then you truly are nothing but a fanboy/troll! But hey, to each his own... PEACE!

I have a Dreamcast and still play it once in a while
Ninjakamster @ Apr 13th 2008 3:11PM
I don't think any of us expected the most expensive console to sell the most systems, price has always been a major factor in console sales.
Perhaps if the PS3 had started out at $400, put the games on DVDs and had an external Blu-Ray drive for movies like the 360's situation, it would be quite a different story.
Many more would have bought it, more developers would be interested in it and create more games and then even more would buy it.
But considering all the many negative factors, the PS3 is selling pretty damn good.
Ironhide @ Apr 11th 2008 8:32PM
Mine just gave up the ghost two weeks ago. It just shuts down every so often after hitting the power button or it just sits on the menu screen and does nothing. Dammit, dammit, dammit!
gregory mitchell @ Apr 11th 2008 8:42PM
sucks for you biyach!!!
Deck @ Apr 11th 2008 8:42PM
Oh the dreamcast. Don't have one anymore, sold my system but I played hours upon hours on that thing!
Derek @ Apr 11th 2008 8:46PM
VMU was brilliant? Are you taking crazy pills? It amazes me how many Dreamcast nuthuggers there are out there....This has got to be the most overrated system of all time...Look, Sega makes some good games, but as a whole, their games are unpolished rush-jobs that could benefit from a little tweaking....Sorry folks, not impressed!
Mr Khan @ Apr 11th 2008 9:13PM
You're gonna be down-voted to oblivion, ya know
Here's an umbrella

I love my Dreamcast. Still use it too. Still have some unfinished games. IM LOOKING AT YOU TOY COMMANDER!
Superstar90 @ Apr 11th 2008 9:54PM
Is it too hard for MS/Sony to get Sega to allow original DC games for DL? The Wii has old Sega systems, so why can't there be a Dreamcast Originals service for XBLA/PSN.
I just want to play Jet Grind Radio and Soul Calibur again, because their sequels were good, but not as good as the originals. They botched the graffiti in JSR:F, and they botched the overall game in SC2.
BPM [SSBB: 5026 4120 1186] @ Apr 12th 2008 12:08AM
I love you, Dreamcast. I don't care that you died prematurely, you still have a special place in my heart.
♥ Power Stone, SoulCalibur, Jet Grind Radio, MvC/MvC2 (the best home versions of each), etc.

Consumerisation much?
J.Goodwin @ Apr 12th 2008 7:58AM
Last hope is also available in very limited quantities for Neo Geo.
Unfortunately, it's not a very good game (compared to the other horizontal shooters that are available on Neo Geo), and costs an arm and a leg.
TJordan0331 @ Apr 12th 2008 4:23PM
Ha, I still have friends over to play some powerstone, still a great system and gets used frequently!
Malarkey @ Apr 13th 2008 2:58PM
I had a lot of fun in 1999 & 2000 with my Dreamcast. A very high percentage of the games that came out for it were really, really good and innovative. I sold my system and all the games I had for it in 2002. But then I couldn't stand the agony, and re-purchased a brand new Dreamcast system in 2007. You could still find unused systems last year for cheap prices...and so now I can finish my unfinished games...Great system...the games really hold up.
bemaggg @ Apr 14th 2008 2:19AM
Dreamcast launched with sooo much potential. In the short time that it was out it really put out some amazing unique titles. Looking at this gen, we have been getting mediocre launches and failed hype not to mention "dry spells". I recall no dry spell on the dreamcast and hype had always delivered results not to mention the best launch titles I can remember. Well... I hope everyone is crossing their fingers for Age of the Beast to still get released.

I played Crazy Taxi 2 the other day. No lie. I miss the DC. I have noticed that my DC doesn't hold the time/date anymore. Maybe needs a new internal Battery.
