GTA IV site update reveals all Team & Race multiplayer modes -- and much more
Rockstar unloaded a mess of new information and time-wasters onto the Grand Theft Auto IV website today. Most notable are full details of two out of the four major subsets of the game's definitely-not-tacked-on multiplayer component, Team and Race, while the Co-op and Competitive breakdowns are promised to be "coming soon." (Aw heck, the game'll be here in just 18 days ... We say, let that hype wave come crashing down already!) Here's the skinny so far:
Team modes

Team modes
- Team Deathmatch - "Rub out" other teams and loot opposing players' dead bodies for money. The team with most cash at the end wins.
- Team Mafiya Work - Work as a team to complete "Mafiya" contracts before time expires; missions include: escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars. Teams must "scupper" opposing crew's work too, as it's the team with the most cash at the end of the round that wins.
- Team Car Jack City - Teams must collect cars that spawn around the map and take them to drop off points for cash; the condition of the cars when dropped off determines the amount of cash, except for bonus cars stuffed with drugs (these have a set value). Teams must deliver the vehicles ordered by the "boss." The team with the most cash at the end wins. (Are you sensing a pattern yet?)
- Cops n' Crooks - The crook team must get its boss to safety. The cop team has to take him down or simply destroy the getaway vehicle (see sub-modes below).
- All for One - Crooks win by getting their boss to a getaway vehicle and escaping. Cops win by killing the Boss before he gets away.
- One for All - No boss, just plain crooks trying to escape. Cops win by killing all of the crooks (there's no respawning in this mode). Crooks win by filling up the getaway vehicle, which holds up to four players.
- Turf War - Timed capture-the-base. A number of bases are scattered across the map and can be captured by standing in the appropriate area for a short time; bases can be captured more quickly with multiple teammates, but can't be captured if opposing players are on the base (you know what to do). Captured bases earn money. The team with the most cash at the end ... wait for it ... wins!
- Race - Checkpoint races with the ability to respawn at the last checkpoint passed; numerous courses for cars, boats and helicopters -- laps and vehicle class/type are adjustable (see sub-modes below).
- Free Race - Point-to-point races; first one to the finish wins.
- Cannonball Run - Traverse several checkpoints anyway you can.
- GTA Race - Checkpoint races with the added element of combat; weapons spawn throughout courses. Players can also exit their vehicles during road races.

"Mafiya"
They're really sticking to the whole Russo-American gangster theme, i like it
Farseer (GDI) @ Apr 11th 2008 5:38PM
Wow, I'm really interested in how these multiplayer modes will pan out. They look promising so far...

ENEMY UAV IS AIRBONE!
Tranando @ Apr 11th 2008 5:38PM
Any confirmation if the 360 is indeed getting the gimped version with no single player splitscreen.
Farseer (GDI) @ Apr 11th 2008 5:46PM
If one were playing single player, what would be the point of a split screen?
dux @ Apr 11th 2008 5:49PM
Single player split-screen?
Benny @ Apr 11th 2008 5:49PM
Nobody gives a fuck.
Tranando @ Apr 11th 2008 6:45PM
Doh, Multiplayer Splitscreen is what I mean the 360 version lacks (and supposed to had some nasty framerate issues, and less populatedenvirometns).
I suppose we will see in a couple of weeks. Some people will of course get burnt by pre-ordering and then finding out that one versions is inferior.
Benny @ Apr 11th 2008 6:53PM
I didn't know trolls came in transsexual flavour.
Luigi Soprano @ Apr 11th 2008 8:51PM
God, how do I reeeeeach theeeesee kiiiiidsss?
Guy, you don't need a split screen when you can see up to 16 players on the screen. If you're talking about local multiplayer split-screen, then that's too farfetched of an idea for GTAIV IMO. It's fine as it is. Why can't 4.29 get here any quicker?
poreilly @ Apr 12th 2008 11:09AM
If either version is missing local multiplayer, that would really suck. That was my major complaint with Burnout Paradise.
What happened to the old days of Bond where four people sat around throwing controllers at each other? If my buddy comes over I have to own two X-Boxs (and Live accounts) just to play against him?
I guess local multiplayer is what the Wii is for.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 12th 2008 6:20PM
can anyone tell me how the 360 version will be inferior when it was designed as the lead platform?
Has any multiplatform game been superior on the PS3? didn't think so.
Drew @ Apr 11th 2008 5:42PM
Omg I can't wait for this!!
Peace Makar @ Apr 11th 2008 5:47PM
The single player never had co-op, they created a secondary co-op based story line - in similar fashion to G.R.A.W. Your story with Niko doesn't carry over to multiplayer other than money used to sup up ur online gangster.

I hope this has split-screen and isn't online/system link only, or all of this excellence will be worthless to me.
Ordeith @ Apr 11th 2008 6:28PM
Split screen is useless in a lot of these modes. It would completely ruin the element of suprise if you are playing against someone.
Like playing Uno or Poker split screen, no point.
Ranus Studios @ Apr 11th 2008 10:15PM
Well sure, but better it be somewhat degraded than completely useless.
Vidikron (FU) @ Apr 12th 2008 1:02AM
Free roaming would still be cool in local split screen.
metal gear already @ Apr 11th 2008 6:11PM
To hell with the Call of Duty map packs then. GTA is just a few days later.

Boys Noize on Electrochoc station = awesome :D
Poisoned Al @ Apr 11th 2008 6:45PM
I thought my brother was weird for saving up free Live codes to play this, now it makes a lot more sense. This looks like a LOT of fun!
Jonah Falcon @ Apr 11th 2008 8:31PM
Wow, this is really going to pressure A.P.B. We'll see if the persistent MMO GTA world of that game will be able to match up to the GTA4 MP.
jynxycat @ Apr 11th 2008 9:02PM
By the time APB is out, GTA5 will be out.

I'm sorry guys but my excitement over GTA IV's Multiplayer just decreased significantly...
I don't mind 1 or 2 modes that deal with "who has the most cash" at the end of the game deal. However it seems like this is overkill. If the whole Multiplayer Experience is just 1 big clusterfuck of "Who has the most monies" at the end of the round I don't see myself doing it over and over again like other games that offer more variety.
Sadly it reminds me of Battlefield: Bad Company and GOLDRUSH which is fun for the 1st few days and then gets ridiculously boring in a manner of minutes.
And then add in the fact that Goldrush is apparently the ONLY MP in BC I don't see myself buying the game anymore...
Taco_Hell @ Apr 12th 2008 12:12AM
Well, how is it different from any other multiplayer? In Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Team Fortress 2 the winning team is whoever has the most points in almost all of the modes. So just because they replaced points with money all of the sudden it's worse?
svenhoek @ Apr 12th 2008 2:57PM
Uhh just about any game that has upgradeable stats has some form of "currency" you win for playing. XP=Money in this game. Plus alot of the game modes dont require you to just run around collect mad lewts, you just get more lewts for winning.
MN Guy @ Apr 13th 2008 5:45PM
The game seems to have a reasonable number of modes for online multiplayer. Keep in mind GTAIV is primarily built for single player, where as Halo and COD4 were built equally for single player and multiplayer.
Replacing the word points or kills with cash doesn't really make any difference as far as I am concerned. I actually like that you need to pick the cash an enemy drops to get the full value. This should cut down considerably on the effectiveness of snipers and campers. Those players will have to work in conjunction with guys running or driving around to get anything done.
95% of the people with multiplayer hands-on experience have come away very impressed. It should be decent.
Jamesology @ Apr 12th 2008 4:15AM
Damn it's a sad time to be a dedicated Nintendo Wii only owner. I guess fanboyism does not justice. Good thing I wasted my money on the PS3 and 360, even though I'm broke. I'm guessing this game will be $69.99
ck @ Apr 12th 2008 9:57AM
I only own a Wii and PS2. I know if I buy a 360 I'm going to be sucked in and all my free time will go out the window. There's probably 15+ games I'd like to play on the 360 - I just can't afford the time, even though I can afford the console.
So mostly it's not fanboyism for me, it's just I picked the console with the cheapest price that has games I can pick up and play for 20-30 minutes at a time.
Jamesology @ Apr 13th 2008 6:26AM
Well obviously you're not a fanboy since you indicated that you own a Sony product and wants a Microsoft product. I was just talking losers who only own a Wii, or even just a Playstation, or 360. Those are the fanboy losers I was talking about.
maxerus @ Apr 16th 2008 7:32AM
@tmacairjordan87
Well many reviewers like EGM said the PS3 burnout looks just a bit better then Xbox.
And with the PS3 being a 1.8 tera flop power house(thats 80% more computing power then the Xbox)this is a trend that will most likely continue.
maxerus @ Apr 16th 2008 7:39AM
@jamesology
Well we dont all have your bank account.
So some of us just cant afford more then one game box.
But good for you!
Willie Dynamite @ Apr 16th 2008 10:19AM
Has any multiplatform game been superior on the PS3? didn't think so
Ummmmm.. WRONG!!! Fight Night Round 3, Virtua Tennis 3, Call of Duty 4, Burnout Paradise...
I own the 360 and the PS3 and have played them on both and I prefer the graphics and gameplay on the above games over the 360s versions.
