If you're a gamer in Europe (sorry about that) and have your heart set on purchasing Harmonix's multi-pronged take on the instrument protagonist genre, you'd best stop tossing your coins into the well and start aiming them at your precious porcelain piggybank. In the second attempt at damage control following Rock Band's European pricing announcement, a Harmonix developer deemed the price immobile and immune to the magical power of wishes.
"You may conclude that Rock Band isn't worth the price charged, and that is your prerogative. But it's not magically going to get cheaper because you wish it to be so," said product development manager, Greg LoPiccolo, posting on the official Rock Band forums. He explained that shocking shipping costs (all the peripherals are manufactured in China, natch) contributed to the price hike, as did the UK's longtime scapegoat, VAT. LoPiccolo went on to insist that the company was not "gouging" consumers. "We can only build our franchise if you buy our games."
While it's up to European gamers to accept this as reason or excuse, it does appear to signal the arrival at an impasse. Somebody has to budge -- be it EA finding cheaper distribution methods or consumers convincing themselves that a set of delayed peripherals is worth more than a Wii or the Xbox 360 Arcade. If the game's sales are severely hampered when it releases on May 23rd, however, you can be sure a price drop will "magically" arrive to save the day.

Im pissed about the price, £140 for a game! Twice the price of Guitar Hero! £10 less than an xbox 360 arcade! but screw it Im just not going to buy it until its an acceptable price and I hope everyone else will do the same (they wont...).

Why don't they rip the mic out of the instrument bundle and put the game in its place?
Makes sense to me.

"Another key distinction between the US and Europe: games generally sell for the SRP at all retail outlets in the US. Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc all charge the SRP for games, with rare exceptions. It is my understanding that European SRP incorporates a hefty retail markup, but that European retailers are free to discount if they so choose. So European retail customers have a reasonable chance of paying less than the SRP, unlike US customers, almost all of who paid the full SRP plus sales taxes. So a reasonable price comparison is what you actually pay, not just the SRP, which means two different things in the two territories."
OK, so you guys thought that you better put a really high price tag on there because retailers are gonna put the price down anyways. Yeah, once they see that your SRP's not selling any Rock Band units, they're gonna put the price down. I mean, this is just a dumb argument. This basically confirms that Rock Band is intentionally over-priced.

I hate to say it, but that's what they get for living in Europe. You don't see me dropping out of high school and then complaining about not being able to become CEO of Chevron.

"We can only build our franchise if you buy our games." & "...it's not magically going to get cheaper because you wish it to be so."
translation:
"we know it's price gouging (possibly even extortion), but you know you're still going to buy our product. who do you think you're kidding?"
the only way to respond to such overwhelming arrogance is to take a 'zero tolerance' approach and NOT BUY ROCK BAND until the price comes down to acceptable levels.
if your looking for an example or encouragement, look no further than the ps3's painful first year and how Sony thought we would all "work more hours to buy one". yea, that philosophy worked...(Kutaragi and Harrison gone several months later, whoops!)
vote with your wallet and don't let them bend you over so easily.

OK, let's look at this pricing in "real" terms. Amazon is currently one of the cheapest places to pre-order due to healthy discounts on the instrument and game over the RRP. At the minute this costs a total of £140, or about $280 at the current exchange rate. 17.5% of this is the UK VAT (sales tax), which takes the price down to £119 (roughly). At the current exchange this makes $240. The current US price on Amazon for the whole bundle is about $150. So that's a $90 to ship from China to the UK instead of China to the US.
Compare to GH3 - UK is £65, or £55 without VAT - about $110. US price $85. An extra $25.
GH3 mark up - 30%
Rock Band mark up - 60%
There is ZERO chance they have that much extra compared to GH3.

...Or option 3: Nobody buys Rock Band until the price goes down. The price sucks, but the guy's absolutely right. There's absolutley NOTHING forcing anybody to buy RB except their own desire to own it.
That's why all the flames are just riddiculous. Because I'd guess 90% of those people will still buy it at launch.

I'm used to pay 70€ for games that only cost (using today's exchange rate) 44€ in NA. I perfectly understand that things like localisation and higher transportation costs also factor into the pricing of a game in Europe. Though I'm not exactly ok with the usually higher prices I can at least follow the reasoning behind these decisions.
But this? Are they fucking kidding me? The price of Rock Band in Europe with tax is 240€. Taking the 18% tax they mentioned as a base, the net price is 203€. Compared to the 170$ (108€) they are charging for the game in NA, this results in increased revenue of 88% per unit. So tax is out as a reason for this price setting. Even with possibly higher costs for localisation, transportation and licensing they can't explain such an increase in price over the NA price. So the only viable explanation is their greed.
"But it's not magically going to get cheaper because you wish it to be so." - But my money won't be magically leaving my wallet because YOU wish it to be so.

And sadly, my greatest concern is whether or not Yahtzee will be able to review this due to the hefty price tag...

I'm well aware of all that. :) But I'm also aware that if Europe is facing a huge price tag, Australian gamers will most likely also suffer. And even publications like toe Escapist have to deal with balancing budgets.

That's true. It's going to get cheaper because no-one will buy it.
