PS3 sales pass 2 million in Japan
The PS3 rode the Blu-ray past the 2 million sales mark in Japan recently according to Media Create. GI.biz reports the PS3's little milestone was severely overshadowed by the incredible sales the PSP is currently pulling off due to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which surpassed 1.5 million units sold in two weeks since launch.
For the sake of comparison, the Nintendo Wii passed the 5 million mark in Japan earlier this year -- it's probably creeping up on six by now. Meanwhile (don't laugh) the Xbox 360 gently rocks in the corner, wondering what it did wrong, with a regional lifetime sales figure of 555,000. Poor little guy.

at least give credit where credit is due. the ps3 is almost double in price and has a slimmer library. The wii has done nothing but release the same Tired Old junk it did on the game cube and the N64 before that. lets see {Mario} check. {mario party} check. {paper mario} check. {mario kart} check. {zelda} check. {Metroid prime} check. {super smash bros.} check. talk about beating a dead horse.
Just get a "I HATE SONY" tattoo. you wont even have to say anything.

Do not fret Fernandos, the PS3's killer software that the Playstation brand is known for is just around the corner, and once it starts...just like the PS2 it will not stop. (until the PS4 or course)
As for the Wii, time will tell if it's horribly crippled hardware and lack of quality 3rd party software can still be going strong a year or two from now.
Re-hashing the SAME 1st party titles cannot last forever either.
Some say the 360 blew it's load too quickly. Meanwhile the Wii came out of the gate blowing it's load all over the place...I wonder how much protien Mario has left.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 11th 2008 10:48AM
"Re-hashing the SAME 1st party titles cannot last forever either."
So, whats the PS3 killer software? Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2 (first one was mediocre)?

Yeah, cause the only difference between MGS3 and 4 is that they added waggle to 4.

Fernandos,
Do you know what re-hashing is? No you don't. Yes MGS4 is the fourth game in the series, yes GT5 is the fifth game in the series...but c'mon nuttchugger, that is the ONLY thing that is similar. Both games run on NEW engines on NEW hardware with much better physics, graphics and on and on.
Meanwhile Nintendos 1st party games are IDENTICAL to the ones on the Cube. YOU know it, and I know it.
I have no problem with a franchise that has sequels, I DO have a problem with sequels that are NOT sequels.

We are going to receive Shiren the Wanderer... also the new Square-Enix game Soul Eater, Factor 5 is also developing for Nintendo... also Square Enix Crystal Bearers... Sky Crawlers with the devs. of Ace Combat...
Plus, WiiWare:
World of Goo: http://freeki.freeki.es/wp-content/uploads/Goo.jpg

Lit: http://kotaku.com/364906/lit-to-light-up-wiiware

And Final Fantasy CC, Alien Crush, Star Soldier...
I see a lot of support.
el serpiente @ Apr 11th 2008 11:14AM
Oh, also maybe new characters, online multiplayer, HD graphics, continuation of an epic story, a full bluray disc of BOO-YAH.
Nice try though. Now, go back to your waggle-box.

Good for you Fernandos.
EVERYTHING the WSM puts out (for me) will look old and busted, and it should...why? BECAUSE its the same DAMN hardware as the 8 year old GameCube.
I could care less if a NEW PS2 game came out, no matter who developed it...I would not buy it because it would look like Krap on my Panny. The physics and the other things that the 360 and PS3 give us would not be there either.
If I want a NEW PS2 game...I will buy it for the PSP, which for me is a PS2 in my pocket.
The Fernandos of the world might be OK with OLD and BUSTED technology, as for me...I like NEW things that push the technological envelope.

so how do ps3 games push the technological envelope if people say it ony uses 30% of the cell and the bluray isnt even used right?
I'd say games on the wii are pushing it. If they can finally code a 360 level game to work with the wii, then THAT would be pushing the envelop.

They havent yet, MGS4, GT5P will be the first games that really start to get under the hood of Sony's black beast. R2, KZ2, LBP, WKS, will go even further...and GOW3, Heavy Rain, Getaway...will go even further.

lol i get what your saying, but the wii came out at the same time as the ps3, so people need time to get used to it too. It supposedly has more power than an xbox1. Plus, getting the waggle to be more than just waggle is pretty difficult too. Give the wii some time and we all might be surprized of waht a good developer can do on it.

I don't get the fanboys. Really. Let's compare "system selling" games:
Nintendo
Super Mario 512
Zelda: Acronym of Doom
Metroid Prime 4: The Quest for More Money
wii gardening (comes with a special garden trowel peripheral and costs $90)
Sony
FFLXIV (which is about effeminate guys wearing BDSM gear fighting other effeminate guys with big hair)
MGS:4, which will be followed by . . .
MGS:4 Substantial Extra Edition, which will be followed by . . .
MGS:4 Substantial Extra Edition Lets Milk the Same Game with One More Release
GT:9--now realistically simulates being stuck in traffic!!!
Fernando, Ken, stop humping your respective consoles long enough to understand this: your 'system sellers' are rehashed, tired, and the Japanese gaming market likes it that way. That's why MS can't get a foothold there. If the next xbox were able to get all of the 'same old same old' that sony and nintendo have exclusives on, they might stand a chance.

So that whole "fuck you, play american games" production focus for the entire Xbox life cycle as well the first year out in Japan did nothing... nope, Made In America. Certainly explains how iPod, McDonalds, and Michael Jackson have such problems in that region... wait.
Just admit it, Microsoft's focus was on american gamers first in their production, lineup, mentality, and design. If that's your focus, good and grand. But don't expect every region in the world to be like your homestate. In fact, the big three (most popular genres) are different in all five regions with very little overlap.
You can't exactly throw Gears of War over there (with Locusts hiding in the closet) and expect it to stick when games in the genre never have.

So then a game like Dark Sector should be doing well over there but its not. I cannot tell you how much it reminded me of playing a RE game. Have you played it? You should its a great game and you would know what I mean. Its VERY UNDERATED. Whats the difference? The difference is that if Dark Sector were made by Capcom that game would be a break out hit over in Japan.
Oh and Dont go using Mcdonalds as an excuse, who the hell doesnt love MickyD's? Lets use this as an example. Here in the US...when was the last time you saw a person of Asian decent driving a US MADE CAR??? Yeah maybe 1000 out of 2 million, MIrite? And why is that?
So the 360 doesnt do well in Japan, I dont think its going to change. There are plenty of titles that appeal to the Japanese audience on 360. You know what they are already so just be quiet already with that mess.

Jack @ Apr 11th 2008 11:08AM
While what Fidlius says is partially correct, it's completely dishonest to suggest the Xbox wasn't already up against the wall when facing the Japanese market.
Japan has always been a hostile market for foreign-made products. It come from the societies historical heritage of nationalism and patriotism. The fervor for Japan has found itself into the economic mindset. Much like the US's Puritan foundings have found their way into our (admittedly hypocritical) moral code.
Samsung, a Korean company, no longer markets in Japan. They are an incredibly successful electronics company elsewhere, but floundered in Japan. To even think about selling Chinese products in Japan would be an obtuse decision. It wasn't until recently that Japan began opening it's mind (limitedly) to American products... as can be seen with the likes of Apple.
So yes, Microsoft did have some missteps when targeting Japan... but to say the Japanese ethos wasn't to blame is just complete ignorance of the cultural predisposition and modern economic occurrences.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 11th 2008 11:10AM
Hardware failure has nothing to do with it. Let's put it this way...
-Bad Blood with Xbox. The Xbox brand isn't strong there to begin with, the successor isn't exactly going to come with arms open. Especially considering there was never a second shipment of Xboxes to Japan. They are STILL selling launch units over there.
-Xbox Live is awesome.... but online gaming, especially chat during gaming, is considered fairly fringe. The only two games to break this huge handicap is Monster Hunter and FFXI. See a problem with Xbox now in pushing Live? Way too many 360 games are dependant on Live and the concept in Japan is a fairly niche deal within itself (see? It's not a Nintendo behind the times or Sony faltering, it's both of those companies make decisions in a country which is culturally different).
-WHY DON'T YOU PLAY WHAT WE PLAY?!? Microsoft has made great strides in wooing third parties from Japan but facing facts, most of those companies look to 360 for their solutions outside of Japan rather than in. Take, for example, Capcom. Aside from DMC4, both of their efforts on 360 have a very western focus to them. Meanwhile, efforts on Wii are very Japanese.
It will take time to repair the Xbox brand in Japan... and this isn't going to help...

Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 11th 2008 11:24AM
Jack, you're kind of right on the isolationalistic attitude. It takes a lot to break the barrier but as you mentioned, it is possible.
Except for some cases. Take, for example. Samsung. Koreans (north and south) and Japanese people HATE each other. This is a generations long hatred. Most asian countries are very racists towards each other, actually. Likewise, there is a noticable hatred between the Chinese and the Japanese. So to see companies like that flounder in Japan would be about as much of a suprise as the lack of Tupac CD sales at a KKK rally. There is a hatred there that's insurmountable.
American products actually have a MUCH better shot in Japan than Chinese and Korean products. Just here's the trick, you HAVE to acknowledge Japan as it's own market and not as "another place we can sell GTA."
Zertoss @ Apr 11th 2008 11:30AM

Sir Fidlious and Jack,
Both of you are quite knowledgable with world events. Kudos to you. I am half Japanese and Sir hit the nail on the head in regards to Samsung.
The Japanese hate the Koreans and the Chinese. They have fought many Wars in the past and in WWII the Japanese did horrible unimaginable things to the Koreas and China. Shiro Ishi and his Unit 731 would make Mengele blush or run for cover.
For the most part, the Japanese kids are taught that Japan was the VICTIM of WWII and the Rape of Nanking and many other atrocities that the Emperial Army commited are NEVER mentioned. Hell, they still worship some of these War criminals at a Shinto Shrine.
It is nice to know that at least some people are VERY well versed in world history and world politics.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 11th 2008 11:39AM
Well, America tries to pretend the camps for Japanese Americans never happened... but they did.
It's this hindsight thing, do you deal with the mistakes of the past and try to deal with how to avoid them (I'm trying to think of a country to use for an example, but drawing a blank), or do you simple act as if it never happened (Germany) or do you take a revisionists approach to dealing whereas you were the good guys who lost?
