Well since i haven't heard any Rock Band instruments break, but i've heard multiple problems with the 360, i guess we're on opposite ends here.

I'm surprised the Wii has any hardware issues at all especially since it's a slot driven optical drive.

And, you know, Nintendo consoles are built like tanks that survive floods, anyway.. Other than the, you know, blowing on the cartridge contact thing... but any console that can survive floods and still work fine (any of their cartridge based systems at least)...is worthy of some praise.

I still say the thing's gotta be made of plastic from recycled Playskoolâ„¢ toys, LoL. It's up there with the GCN in terms of durability.

I think this is about as newsworthy as that story I posted in the comments about PS3's getting disc-read errors a few weeks ago.

Honestly, I'd bet that this is more widespread than that... but both are clearly far less that the RRoD.

Don't be a Nintendo apologist ... If this was not true in some form or another the problem would not even be brought up ... The story you posted was from a blog created a day or so before you posted the story in which it had 2 stories on the blog ... One said the PS3 had hardware failures more widespread than the RROD issue and the pother saying that the RROD issue gives Microsoft the ability to have people associate the RROD with the console ... Thus implying that the RROD story is actually good for Microsoft ... That was the most biased piece of shit blog I have ever seen ...

my entertainment center gets a little dusty and the only thing i constantly wipe down is my PS3 (since it looks so bad dusty). but i had no problems with my Brawl. when i started hearing about the problem (advantage of being "in the know") i cleaned my Wii with on of those CDs that has the brushes on it for cleaning the lens. ive never had a problem with my Brawl not playing.

if Mario Kart Wii is on a dual layer disc then more than likely, they are going to run into the same problems. if its single layered though, i would assume it would be business as usual.

I really hate having to post a comment like this but it seems inevitable anytime a news item like this appears...

-This is a rumor. Could be true, could be false, who knows? Considering the widespread tales haven't come from the other region this game launched in, I'd say it's safe to assume isolated incident.

-If this is a huge issue, expect Nintendo to react accordingly. Same way they did last time. If this is bad news, it's still a nonissue.

-Your personal experiences do not represent the world. Period. I know you think posting "Well, mine worked just fine" means something but it doesn't. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake and you represent roughly 0.0000000167% percent of the world population, so quit acting like that's 100% you ignorant twats!

Where in anybody's post does it say: "The Duel Layer problem does not exist". People in here are just saying it hasn't happened to them. It's called a discussion. People are relating their stories.

Nintendo said SSBB has an issue on some machines? HOLY SHIT, DID THEY?

Thanks, Sheppy, for keeping us ignorant twats informed.

A few notes...

Sir, I do indeed happen to be a unique and beautiful snowflake. Mom tells me so.

"If this is a huge issue, expect Nintendo to react accordingly" Agreed, N seems to be pretty upfront about admitting/cleaning up their own mess. Well, for 1st party titles at least...

Good word choice. Personally, I'm a fan of twit, but you really got some good chuckles outta me there.

Seventhly, 'Sheppy'???

Still getting this game... I sympathize with those who have experienced the Smash read error. I haven't.. had a Wii since launch (well... Black Friday after launch) and no issues... and the room the Wii is in gets kind of smoky... so I'm not sure - guess I'm just lucky.

It is a bunch of crap. We rented it only to get it home and it could not be read. We took it back and switched it out but the same thing happened. Looked online and seen that you have to send in your wii and the game. It is going to take a week or so. Good for the people who boght it, Iguess but you really shold'nt rent it unless you live close to the video store. I think Nintendo has gone a little to far.

error or not error its not a big deal to me as long as it doesn't require the exchange of friend codes and the limited number of friends you can add to play like brawl

I had the Brawl DRE. My Wii sits in the same entertainment center as the rest of my stuff.

My 6 year old $80 DVD player, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, 360, etc. None of those ever had any problems with 'dust', and the ONLY one of those that's ever been sent in for repairs in the Wii.

Nintendo's long line of awesome hardware died with the Wii. It's cheap parts that do it, not 'dust', or something else in this house would have been affected.

What I heard was they used an obsolete lens in the early Wii's, and mine is a launch day Wii. This was some type of lens not used since the 90s... due to high failure rates.

I don't know. I do know that I'd been ignoring the horrible online and lack of a hard drive (my flash drive is way past full on the Wii), but the DRE error left me without a Wii for a week... starting on the night of the launch of my favorite gaming franchise ever. Nintendo isn't getting any more excuses from me.

My UK PAL copy of Mario Kart Wii suffers occasional disc read errors. Sometimes it won't load at all. Sometimes it stops reading the disc in the middle of a game and the game cuts out to a 'unable to read disc' screen. That said, once it does get running it's usually fine. I've played it for 3 hours straight on two occasions over the weekend with no problems.

No idea if that relates to SSBB problems though as we haven't even been graced with that on these shores yet!

I heard that the crappy laser in the wii is one of the reasons that it's not used as a dvd player.
I haven't tried either game in my Wii, because i don't want them (I don't enjoy SSB games, and Mario Kart is the same every time). However, this issue's probably going to affect other games in the future, so here's hoping mine's okay.

Got brawl - game worked fine. I've almost unlocked all the achievements.

Got Mario Kart - game worked fine. Well, it worked fine yesterday, Sunday, but not today. I woke up and wanted to play one race before school. Disc read error, please eject the disc and restart your Wii. I did as it instructed, and put the game in again to try a second time. This time not even the disc channel could read it. The disc has absolutely no scratches and no dust. I tested out Brawl, Guitar Hero, and No More Heroes to see if it would work with other discs. Some loaded in the Disc Channel, but failed to work when the game loaded, and some couldn't even be read at all.

I did get the game started and was able to play one race before school started, but while the second track was loading, the Disc read error message came up again. I nearly shat myself. I felt my wii and it was slightly warm, which is normal. But still, I let it cool unplugged all day and came home to try again. Disc Channel loaded......Disc read error when the game started. I've always treated my wii and games with care, so I doubt this is my fault. Nobody in our house smokes and we wouldn't dream of having a fire during in the Spring/Summer seasons.

I did, however, purchase my Wii around February, four or so months after launch. It may simply need disc lens fix like the ones with brawl.

This isn't because of the consumer being careless, at least in my case. It may very well be an isolated incident. The underpants gnomes may have snuck into my home at night and knocked down my Wii. >_>

I had a problem reading the disk, took it back and exchanged it and had the same thing on the second disk. I then did an system update on the console and it immediately read the disk.

Might be coincidence, might be real. If you have troubles reading Mario kart, do an update on your console.

Just brought my US copy hom e an hour ago, put it in, it did the system update, rebooted, I go to disc channel, hit "start", the disc makes some noise, and then I get a read error.

Back to Circuit City I go...

Okay here's something I'm going to bring to the table about this.

I have a modded wii. I have over 150 backups of games. I also own 15 games (50 bucks a pop...do the math). Yes I mod, but I buy what I find to be pleasing as 10 bucks at Movie Gallery isn't worth a shitty game.

Here's what is not being brought to this scene...fireplace smoke and cigerette smoke are both C02, both thick smoke, and will both damage electronics equally.

Here's the second thing. The lens is unsable. In the modding scene, frequent "lens tweaking" is a common thing. The difference between a laser reading a DL disk and a SL disk are completely different. Plus, ever think why they ARE so cheap?

Thirdly, Nintendo implemented a prototype security system in their games starting with Super Mario Galaxy, this was easily cracked by "djklasjdflk" and all was good. Now things are more interesting...my Wii is broken due to Mario Kart Wii. Here's what's sad, I ran the PAL version on a NTSC console pre-release due to the leak. I bought the game on launch day. Dead. I get a black screen on all disks now. I tried the same game on my friend's normal Wii--bricked.

My guess is that Nintendo tried some anti-pirating software and it backfired. Will they admit this mistake? Doubtful.

Hope this helps...feel free to e-mail me at xzdazedzx@yahoo.com.
