See Speed Racer Wii in action

Like (we'd wager) most of you, when we first saw the Wachowski Bros. take on Speed Racer, we thought, "Hey, that looks like a video game!" So, imagine our surprise when we saw the video game take on the Wachowskis' take on Speed Racer (courtesy of MTV Multiplayer) and said, "Hey, that looks like a rental at best!"

OK, so, to be more diplomatic, we think the stylized look is actually kind of cool and a smart way to get around the Wii's comparatively diminutive processing power. But are non-animated pictures really going to take up 1/4 of the screen and yell at you every three seconds? Like, really?

(In a related note, check out the picture we put after the break. We know John Goodman plays Speed's dad, but was Speed's dad an Italian plumber?)

I would say it looks "clunky", but I'm not sure the car runs even that well.

John Goodman is my hero... To be in both The Big Lebowski and Speed Racer makes him the best ever.

That's the dumbest thing I've seen in a while. It's just as good as the trailer! -_-

Poor Speed. I like the original show, cheesy as it is.

The AI commentary is annoying as f**k.

Prior to retail release they just replace each one with Slippy and some inane comment.

Any word on ExciteTruck 2 yet? Man, I hope it's sooner than later, but likely not :(

I haven't heard about a Speed Racer movie, and apparently it comes out in May? I just watched the trailer, and it looks awful, like a high-production April Fools joke.

Aye, what's the deal with horrible remakes of old properties in the past year alone? Speed Racer, the Chipmunks, Underdog. Transformers was there too, but was an exception (at least to most, some loathed it)

Honestly Alvin and the CHipmunks wasn't bad ... I wasn't expecting much and I was pleasently surprised ... Not as good as the animated movie where they were racing in hot air balloons carrying diamond filled dolls but good none the less

remember how old you were when you watched those shows? Well movie producers are trying to appeal to that age group, not yours. They're hoping that you, the parent will at least get some nostalgic warm feeling when you take your kids to see it, but mainly these movies are for the kids.

Someone tried to clone F-Zero/WipeOut

to be fair, the stylized look of the track is smooth, and the cars are passable, but the constant commentary would put this game on mute faster than anything, and calling the controls sloppy might be high praise

Yea - this game just makes me want a well done F-Zero.

Well I grew up on Speed Racer so I hold it to a higher level than most would ... This game looks more like the new CG movie than it feels like the original Speed Racer ... I am sure thats what they were going for but I don't like it ... I will give it a chance (the movie that is - on bit torrent that is) but if it sucks I won't be to dissapointed ... It seems like when I was growing up and always saying "wow they need to make a _______ movie" was actually a bad idea ... Most of them all suck ... I liked Transformers but most of these superhero and video game movies have sucked hard ...

With that said I have heard rumors of a live action GI Joe movie and accompyaning video game ... I am sure a quick Google would suffice but can anyway confirm?

The gi joe film is real and they are filmin it as of now. There are production pics online. You can check yahoo or gijoeclub.com for pics of Snake Eyes as he will appear in the film.

My thoughts exactly. While traditional racing doesn't have loops, power up and "witty" banter(Really why does Speed himself sound the most robotic?), it certainly is more exciting.

Whats with all these Zero G racing clones can't they just give up on ripping off whoever made up Zero g and think of something original to race for once, I'm not to sure but in terms of videogames F-Zero was the first.

wow, very mario-esque. if they ever get the sequel to super mario bros. the movie off the ground they need to call that guy.

Remember the PSone Speed Racer game? Definitely a fun game with all the shortcuts and everything but it only had one track which totally killed it. Still, jumping the side of track and using the saws to cut trees down and then using the submarine thing in a river was pretty awesome.

Well, I WAS going to buy Mario Kart, but I'll definitely wait for this instead, though the wait will possibly kill me! GO SPEED RACER GO!

so lemme get this straight..

no matter if the car is rightside up, upside down on its roof, OR driving diagonal/sideways/backwards not only can u drive the same speed as every other car, but possibly FASTER?!? i want that car.. NOW

this is the most abysmal attempt at something worth creating

i am a huge fan of the old series and why the movie and the game ignore the classic gearhead vibe of the show I will never know. these things aren't even speedracer at all - some kind of glo-b hot wheels set - old speed racer had some serious good personalities even with limited dialog - they didn't insult kids back then and shouldn't now

that game is a just an assjam of clunk

"assjam of clunk" is now my favorite bad game summary of all time.

This looks to be the worst video game iteration yet. Hell I'd rather play the PS1 version over this http://psx.ign.com/articles/153/153662p1.html, which I somewhat enjoyed a tad bit, if they would have developed it a bit more

The style is great, although crashing moments really suck ass, but where's my upbeat OST?

Could we please stop making racing games where the car has only one wheel? I thought Screamer2 was the last game to handle that way.

I also just watched Dune, yesterday. If anyone wants to know the right way to handle a movie tie-in...

You really don't like the people on Joystiq, do you?

Game looks cool and maybe it's the fastest racing game.
