Singapore announces game rating system
The island nation of Singapore announced today that it's launching a video game rating classification system beginning April 28. There are currently only two rating categories: M18 and "Age Advisory." M18 games require retailers to check ID in order to ensure that customers are at least 18 years old. Age Advisory is "suitable" for ages 16 and above, but will not require ID checks.
The system has been in development for two years according to the government, involving "detailed research and consultation." For a baseline of games that'll meet the M18 requirement, expect titles like the un-banned Mass Effect and The Darkness to make the rating. No word yet on punishment (or required cane lashings) for violating the rating system.

It took them to years to come up with this massive, whopping two tier game ranking system? M18 and "Age Advisory".. are you serious? That's... really pathetic.

So "Dora the Explorer Goes to the Zoo" is rated as "Age Advisory" for 16 and over? Madness!

16 year olds are clearly the target market for the game anyway ;p

It's cause the Mexican scare has spread as far east as Singapore, that's why they rated it so high.

Off course the rating system itself hasn't been two years in the making but the Mass Effect situation has triggered the final implementation at last. Instead of bashing this look at the good side, games that were previously banned can now be legally sold in Singapore. Easy to rant about the strict rules here but you try to live on an island this small with 5 major religions and plenty of nationalities without major problems.

This was due to lobbying by Microsoft to allow GTA IV to be sold here.
It will be the first time GTA is "officially" available.

One of my church friends is going to manage processing in Singapore and apparently all the leaders are looking at our philosophy of peace with all nations to resolve their situation. But that has nothing to do with video games and I've wasted valuable time.
