Joystiq hands-on: Rock Band (Wii)
Rock Band is coming out on the Wii June 22, with the guitar-mic-drum-game bundle price of $179. You've played it on other systems. I played it on the Wii. My short impression: It's Rock Band on the Wii.
Rock Band looks a little different on the Nintendo system. The controllers are all finished in white and mimic Nintendo's blue LED dots to mark the player order. Best of all, the guitar controllers are wireless ($60 alone). [Update: A couple comments have asked good questions about how the wireless gear connects. There's a USB hub and dongle with an RF transmitter. So the Wii Remotes aren't a factor except for the mic user.] And the white drums ($80 alone) and other hardware include behind-the-scenes revisions that weren't included in the original launch last fall. Harmonix mentioned that those changes, including a wider drum layout and sturdier parts, have been rolled out to the 360 and PS3 already.
Rock Band Wii includes 63 songs, including a few "bonus" tracks that PS3 and 360 owners might have already downloaded, like "Roxanne". As already lamented, the Wii version doesn't offer online downloads or internet play, but game representatives indicated that those are important additions that they're pursuing. (Roughly $12-million worth of "important" and counting.) However, there are no specific plans to either add them to the Wii game or save them for a Rock Band 2.

It seems to me this should be priced less seeing as there is no surround sound, online play and such. Am I missing why this would be a good deal? (Beyond a few extra songs)
Oh, and dont get all "Wii for life!" on me, I am not cutting on the Wii here.

I know that my sister and her boyfriend are getting it as they only have a Wii. I have a 360 and a Wii, and I'm plumping for the 360 version when it comes out. If I can afford it. :'-(
So for multi-console people, it's a no-brainer to go for the 'full' versions, but for Wii only owners, and there are lots out there, it gives them an entry point.
jadenguy @ Apr 16th 2008 11:33AM
it's not like a great deal of wii owners even HAVE the choice. there are more wii owners than . there's the choice not to get a wii, but i'm loving mine so much i couldn't imagine that i'd have time to play anything else except the ds when i'm in the restroom or in a car driving or trying to sleep with my entertainment system surge protector off so i can sleep without the blinking lights and temptation of gaming...
Dr. @ Apr 15th 2008 12:38PM
hrmmmm. Does this mean the red and green pads on the drums will actually register during fast sections, unlike the drums in the original bundles?
Martez @ Apr 15th 2008 12:45PM
So, they're pursuing it but they don't have any plans to add it? Whatever, I'll just get Rock Band for the PS3 or 360.
FOXHOUND @ Apr 15th 2008 1:16PM
smart idea. -nod- Because when it comes to this sort...
pursue = thought about it once, got denied, eff it & don't try any further

internet play I could care less about, but not having the DLC make me not want to purchase this. My roomate has the 360 version (and is moving away with it come this may :< ) and most of the best songs are DLC. Granted, some of the worst songs are also DLC but the point is you have a choice and the song list is always increasing...
That and there isnt any character creation or world tour band mode right? Those are some of my favorite features of the 360 version so... wii version, probably not get

Obie @ Apr 15th 2008 12:53PM
Despite it's limitations I am sure it will sell like hotcakes.
BTW has anyone ever eaten a hotcake? I never have so why do they act like hotcakes is something everyone wants?
Hmmmm...
deaftly @ Apr 15th 2008 12:58PM
Its just another name for a pancake.
Obie @ Apr 15th 2008 1:05PM
Screw that I HATE pancakes! Blech!
Jerk Face v 2.0 (MSDF Edition) @ Apr 15th 2008 1:10PM
How is it even POSSIBLE to not like pancakes? They are like sex that you can have at Bob Evans without going to jail.
Obie @ Apr 15th 2008 1:29PM
For a moment there I read "sex WITH Bob Evans". :O
Sorry, I am more of a French toast or Belgian waffle kinda guy. ;)
nealpro @ Apr 15th 2008 2:03PM
"As a comedian, you have to start the show strong and you have to end the show strong. You can't be like pancakes: all exciting at first, but by the end you're fuckin' sick of 'em."
Levi @ Apr 15th 2008 2:22PM
Yeah, but Belgian waffles and French toast don't sell as well as pancakes.
ILPC @ Apr 15th 2008 7:38PM
I Like Pan Cakes...
deaftly @ Apr 15th 2008 1:02PM
Gotta be flat out guitarded to buy this version.
Curmeo 2.0 @ Apr 15th 2008 1:07PM
why again is the Wii bundle $10 more expensive then the PS3/360 bundles when it doesnt have online play, DLC, or surround sound (not to mention stuck in legacy 480 resolution)?
Fatass of Kickassness @ Apr 15th 2008 1:11PM
It's actually the same price as the other two bundles. Which still makes it a bit of a ripoff. Good thing I already have the 360 version :]
Developers need to stop porting and actually work to make products worth buying on the Wii.
Curmeo 2.0 @ Apr 15th 2008 1:23PM
i guess Stern made an error with the $180 price then. anyway, i agree, but i dont think EA/Harmonix are to blame in this case. i think Nintendonald's either doesnt have a solid online infrastructure for third party devs to utilize or they dont want their software licensing profit margins to decrease by absorbing some of the costs, which Sony and M$ do absorb. probably a bit of both.
as far as DLC goes, it will never appear on Wii since the system doesnt have an HDD, atleast according to Harmonix.
deaftly @ Apr 15th 2008 1:25PM
Aren't you banned Curmeo?
Curmeo 2.0 @ Apr 15th 2008 1:32PM
to deaftly:
it is up to the Joystiq crew whether they will permaban me or not. for now i am back as Curmeo 2.0. like i said before, i will tone it down on this blog of limited speech. but Synner really did deserve my insult for his past actions.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Apr 15th 2008 1:41PM
I doubt hitting notes would be all that hard to implement. You may be right, though - however, looking at past third party efforts on the Wii (hell, this one included), there's been absolutely no effort to update the game - it's just a lazy port with a few extras thrown in to help people justify the purchase.
mr mobius @ Apr 15th 2008 1:07PM
I'd consider for the sheer reasons that it has more instruments than GHIII and better songs on disc. Other than that it's because Wii is only home console I have anyway.
vidGuy @ Apr 15th 2008 1:16PM
DLC makes this game god. Without it I'd feel ripped off, even though its so damned expensive. Plus, you can get the 360 version for less than $150 when it's on sale, so this is a REAL crappy pricepoint for the Wii version.
coast19 @ Apr 15th 2008 1:27PM
I don't like how they did the wireless on this. Why couldn't they have just used the Wii's built in blue tooth?
Don-Don @ Apr 15th 2008 1:38PM
Can you explain the comment about a 'wider drum layout' revision already rolled out for 360 versions? I haven't read anything about the physical dimensions of the drum sets being different. As far as I know, it's only been internal changes.
I bought my 360 special edition recently but received and EL drum set and not a QM, although I've tested it and the red and green pads can register fast drum rolls.
Scoota @ Apr 15th 2008 5:26PM
I also question the comment about the sturdier and wider drums. What is the manufacture date of the latest drums if I go and purchase a new rock band set from best buy? I've got the 2 year best buy warrenty, and I can easily just go bring back my drum set and get the new one, but i want to make sure its 'wider and sturdier'. Anyone have a date?
Co @ Apr 15th 2008 1:41PM
Rock Band 2?? LMAO yeah right! That'll be the day!
/sarcasm
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Apr 15th 2008 2:05PM
The Strat isn't white? That would have been sexy.
But, no, the drums are white. Because that makes sense.
ScottG13 @ Apr 15th 2008 2:32PM
More spongy strummers?
Covarr @ Apr 15th 2008 5:51PM
Where's the "Still Alive"? I need that song.
karmaghost @ Apr 15th 2008 6:51PM
What's going on in that picture in the Wii Rock Band gallery with all the USB devices and wires? Are those wireless-to-USB adapters? Doesn't the Wii have bluetooth?
Spin44 @ Apr 15th 2008 8:09PM
I have a small question about the Wii version of this.
I found reviews of it and this one (http://www.expotv.com/Guitar-Hero-III-Legends-of-Rock-Bundle-/35-14HO) makes me wonder where the guitar outputs the Wii Remotes signal? It's obviously wireless but does the censor at the top of the Remote just output right by that edge where the top of the Wii Remote is or is it outputting somewhere else? I'm just wondering if the signal can be interrupted if you cover the wrong spot!
Zack Stern @ Apr 15th 2008 8:21PM
Oh. Good question, Spin44: The wireless gear ships with dongles that plug into USB. So the Wii Remote isn't a factor except the mic.
Nicholas @ Apr 15th 2008 11:58PM
So, this all runs wirelessly then? Wow, I'm going to need more batteries... I think I'd like it better if I could use my Wii remote because I at least have rechargeable battery packs for those.
Matt B @ Apr 16th 2008 11:15AM
I am still flabbergasted that they decided to duplicate the Wiimote functionality (right down to the LEDs) and go with a non-Wiimote wireless solution. Which pretty much leaves GH3 guitar support out in the wind. Until they at least allow GH3 guitar support, I'm not buying Rock Band. I don't want a third guitar. And it'll suck to have a USB hub with giant dongles that I shouldn't need. The guitars should be Wiimoted, and then the drums and mic can plug into the USB ports in the back of the Wii. (Though it would be cool if the drums were wireless too). Rock Band for the Wii is such a disappointment.
