Joystiq impressions: Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS)

Guitar Hero: On Tour includes the same kind of career mode and single-song play as Guitar Hero III; many of the portable songs also overlap with other versions of the game. But 20 new tracks, a few control twists, and a new versus mode should make it more than Guitar Hero Lite.
Gallery: Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS)
Players work the four frets in either left- or right-hand mode, and strum on the DS screen to play notes. An on-screen whammy bar activates sustain effects, or gamers can just hold the stylus down after picking for the same results. Like a real rock-star, players activate Star Power by yelling at the DS. We recommend phrases like "I only eat green M&Ms," or "Hello, Cleveland!" If you're already geeking out enough playing this game in public, we don't know why you'd be too self-conscious to yell, but an on-screen icon also activates that bonus if you want to be discreet.
A new duel system tops the multiplayer modes. With a local, direct wireless connection, two players compete to turn in the best performance, although they also earn power-ups to harass each other. Try to screw up your friend with a camera flash, brightly popping the screen to white; or send groupies over who demand autographs, covering up the strum area until you sign a T-shirt. Other distractions force an opponent to restring a guitar, ramp up their difficulty, or overload their amp momentarily so the audio cuts out. Your guitar might even catch on fire, forcing you to blow on the mic to put it out.
The duel mode and complete port of other major points of the game make this version of Guitar Hero worth watching. Look for it in June.

kPod @ Apr 15th 2008 7:17AM
Still, do I want to look an idiot by playing this?
DCBlack @ Apr 16th 2008 10:57AM
You could be envied for playing this...
Kewlrats @ Apr 15th 2008 7:23AM
The "AN MORE!" part is killing me! What more do can we possibly get in this mega-pack?!
(Sarcasm)
Kewlrats @ Apr 15th 2008 7:25AM
Wow, I typoed "AND". Holy crap, I need coffee this morning.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHH HA!
Desert Eagle @ Apr 15th 2008 1:13PM
Seconded, but... was it really necessary to make three conntinous posts that only say HAHAHA?
And I'm not going to get this. Ever since I got Rock Band, I haven't been interested in the money-whoring franchise that GH is nowdays.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ Apr 15th 2008 7:27AM
uff...I'm better now.Do they seriously expect me to use this?
Joe @ Apr 15th 2008 8:00AM
Yeah, because you look so cool playing on a DS without the attachment...
baby sea tuna @ Apr 15th 2008 8:40AM
Yeah, but I've never actually laughed at anyone I've seen playing a DS before. I could imagine doing so with this.
Hey, at least it's cooler than that stupid GH belt buckle/amp thing I saw at Target the other day...
aReEeNeN @ Apr 15th 2008 9:09AM
Despite my initial thoughts, I think this could be pretty fun in a way. I'm just concerned what kind of price they try and slap on this game. I mean, I could see myself going a little over the normal DS game price, but if they try to land somewhere in between DS game and console version of GH, they can cancel that tour...
Hafk @ Apr 15th 2008 9:18AM
Its a straight $50 on the Redoctane site.
$15 pricier than most DS games, but then, it may be worth if you can get it in a $10 off sale.
t_m @ Apr 15th 2008 9:56AM
so.... where are these impressions then?
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Apr 15th 2008 10:12AM
is it good? Whats the audio and visual quality? Should I care about this game?
Dudek @ Apr 15th 2008 10:14AM
That's what I thought too.
Iridium @ Apr 15th 2008 10:40AM
I think you'd look less like an idiot playing this than holding a fake plastic guitar tethered to your console, but that's just me.
Delgado @ Apr 15th 2008 11:46AM
They're wireless now. Duh.
ChuckD @ Apr 15th 2008 11:28AM
Waiting for impressions... all I see is a reworded fact sheet.
Justin B @ Apr 15th 2008 11:39AM
Hand's on impression without the true hands-on experience? This article tells us nothing about how the game plays, how easy/hard it is to play, how the song quality is, etc. It's basically stating the new modes and feature set rather than talk about any true impressions
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 15th 2008 12:15PM
So many pics will be lost... See part of the draw of the console version of this game is that you're holding a fake guitar in order to simulate playing it. This seems more like reading a book, and as such, more accurately simulates reading a difficult book with pages falling out rather than any guitar I've ever known. I hope it's still fun tho.
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 15th 2008 2:38PM
Also: a four string guitar? Should probably be called Bass hero. (will sadly buy it anyway because it still looks fun... sigh)
HarryGrundel @ Apr 16th 2008 1:51PM
In response to your 4 button comment...
I've never seen a 5 string guitar (see GH and Rock Band controllers.. 5 buttons).
Ok, I take that back. I have played with my high E string broken for months due to laziness and an unwillingness to change strings. (too closely resembles work for me).
Just making a point. No harm intended.
HarryGrundel @ Apr 16th 2008 1:57PM
Oh, and yes, I too will be one of the awesomely "hip" people, glued like moths to the flame to my DS, screaming, "It's not a cucumber, I swear", or "But, mine goes to eleven" any time I need to activate "Star Power".
More of a misnomer with this iteration than any other GH. I felt like a schlep before, angrily swinging my plastic guitar in the air, belting out obscenities as I try (unsuccessfully) to activate my star power in order to save my ass the first time I played Frankenstein on expert.
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 16th 2008 9:51PM
Agreed. There are also five string basses. I have one. I've also played a guitar with a broken string for a few days lol.. not easy when chording.
I think that my issue is less with the amount of buttons, and more with the shape. It's not at all like a guitar lol. But, that said, even though imitating a real guitar is supposed to be the point, I'd probably get it anyway haha..
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 15th 2008 12:24PM
I'm definitely buying this for the DS... but did one of the screenshots say "BLOW OUT THE FIRE"?
I thought we already went over this with the first generation of DS games. Goddamn you Activision, or whoever is developing this game.
HarryGrundel @ Apr 16th 2008 2:04PM
You must be a smoker, right?
I thought I was the only one who got dizzy blowing like a jackass into the microphone with the Mario64.. DS... whatever, mini games.
However, I have heard of a hack that enables the two panels of the DS to be used as a defibrillator. Google it.
343 Guilty Fart @ Apr 15th 2008 1:26PM
Still waiting for Rock Band: On Tour
iGashly @ Apr 16th 2008 5:11PM
hahahaha. that would be interesting. it could work though.
Alzheimers @ Apr 15th 2008 4:11PM
"Players work the four frets in either left- or right-hand mode"
How does that work? does the screen invert, or does it just reverse the fingerings?
driven2sin @ Apr 15th 2008 4:27PM
umm so how would you get any sleep with this around?
how would anyone's girlfirends get any... ah never mind...
HarryGrundel @ Apr 16th 2008 2:06PM
Girlfriends? What, I mean... you...
Ohhhhhhh.... girlfriends.
The warm pink pockets of pleasure many games will never know.
No worries in this forum, right guys?
iGashly @ Apr 16th 2008 5:17PM
I think that guitar hero is taking over the world.
My reason:
I was in my local video game/record store and all of a sudden Reptilia by the strokes came on, it must have been the perfect timing, I mean perfect, because half the people in the store started "air guitar heroing" to the tune. i felt embarrassed for them.... i couldn't help but to join in.
anonymous @ May 16th 2008 2:58PM
