New Metal Gear Online details: catapults, customization and Konami IDs

You'll be able to customize your character's appearance extensively, which will likely only deter people for a few minutes from playing as (a now self-made) Solid Snake. Skills in the game will be upgradeable, and you choose four to specialize in. Said the blog, "Close Quarter Combat (CQC), knife fighting, quickness, alertness, heavy weaponry mastery, demolition, and sniper mastery are just some of the skills you can specialize in."
Also revealed are a list of weapons and items you can use in the game, two new sepia-infused maps are also revealed, Blood Bath and Groznyj Grad, and the best idea so far: catapults for launching your character across maps.

Why do we need a Konami ID? Oh well, I add stupid little strings of 16 numbers on my Wii, I'm sure adding a Konami ID won't be to bad. Anyways this looks sweet and I can't wait to download and play it!

Konami wants to track who you are and what you play. Sucks I know but what can you do?
For those of you having trouble getting a Konami ID, just keep trying...the servers are SLLLLLOOOOOWWWW, but after a few times or trying, it will work.

This it totally off topic, but how much is Warhawk? I figured you would know.

Usually $40...but right now it is $30 on the PSN store. Buy the retail version if you do not or want another Bluetooth headset. The one that comes with the game is a Jabra BT125 wich retails for $30 on average.
Mr Intel @ Apr 15th 2008 1:43PM
it went back to 40 dollars today

^That paragraph right there has just confirmed a sale of a PS3, I'm not even kidding. MGS3 was worth $250 to me a few years ago ($200 PS2 $25 MGS3 $25MemCard) and this looks to be worth $400. Sony zealots/fanboys/butttouchers/defenders, welcome a new member to your ranks!
Question, is the MGS4 bundle going to be here in America, if not, would importing one be a wise decision?
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 15th 2008 12:16PM
The console bundle will be made available in the US in limited numbers.
Also, MGS4 only comes with MGSOnline Starter Pack which means the full product is still out in the ether somewhere.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 15th 2008 12:20PM
Yo Fiddy ;)
Is it too late to go get a preorder code at GS? I really wanna get in on this.
Trev @ Apr 15th 2008 12:21PM
"Starter Pack" is misleading. The MGO that comes with MGS4 is the whole thing. There's not a separately sold MGO game. There will be DLC for it, so the starter pack is the entire thing... for now.
Raikage (LDF CRAB BATTLE!!!) @ Apr 15th 2008 12:22PM
Paying for a demo...WUT? I keed:D
Any date on the official MGS online?
And what kind of PS3 is in the bundle, It would be freaking awesome to play all the MGS games on one console (1&2 the NES games are on MGS3 Subsistance)
WiiSports Machine...Fernandos in disguise PSN: Killjebus @ Apr 15th 2008 12:50PM
Fenix, my local Gamestop had a bunch of 'em left (west burb of Chicago) just the other day.
Call yours and ask.

80GB PS3 is what comes with MGS4 or rather MGS4 comes with 80GB PS3. And DS3 of course.
upz @ Apr 15th 2008 2:30PM
I think Trev is right on this one. Really not a bad business model from Konami, selling this game in parts, but if this model takes off, I imagine I'd have certain qualms about buying my games in pieces, especially if the final product ends up costing me way more than $60.
baby sea tuna @ Apr 15th 2008 12:18PM
Wait...this game has a man-cannon too? Is that supposed to be a joke?
DemonGSides @ Apr 15th 2008 1:09PM
Thinking the exact same.

"and the best idea so far: catapults for launching your character across maps."
I have no problem with games copying others, but what the hell was Ross thinking when he wrote this? It's certainly nothing new.
riggs @ Apr 15th 2008 1:34PM
i think he meant the best idea so far for THIS game.

I want this game! Want! Need!
copa @ Apr 15th 2008 12:20PM
I kind of like the Call of Duty 4 approach, where they package the single-player and the online multiplayer versions of the game in a single disc, and charge $60 for the whole thing.
MGS4 breaks it into two separate games, and charges $100 to get both of them.
Uh... yay?
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 15th 2008 12:21PM
I see what you did there.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 15th 2008 12:21PM
Why is everything being compared to Call of Duty 4 these days :S
There are other games with single player and multiplayer combined yaknow ¬_¬
Trev @ Apr 15th 2008 12:24PM
Incorrectly compared. There's no retail Metal Gear Online "full version". What comes with MGS4 is the whole thing and is called a starter pack because they plan to expand it with DLC.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 15th 2008 12:30PM
Thanks Trev I was wondering about that too. So cool, its really the whole thing, MGS4 and MGO but they are going to be adding to it.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Apr 15th 2008 12:31PM
@Fenix_ ive got a spare code if you want it fenix drop me a line on live if you still need it.
copa @ Apr 15th 2008 12:33PM
"There's no retail Metal Gear Online full version."

Holy crap. I had heard that MGO was $40, so I was assuming it was $100 for the bundle. Evidentally, if you want to play the online component of MGS4, it actually runs at $60 separate, and $120 for the bundle.
Here's my recommendation. Konami needs to delay MGS4 until the end of the year. Next month they should release MGS4: Prologue: Rise of the NOT A DEMO. It contains the first couple of levels from MGS4 and sells for $40.
From recent history, it appears that a lot of people here would be very enthusiastic about this.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 15th 2008 12:36PM
Copa, you should be a comedian.

Dude, SWEET thanks yeah Ill get on that!
Thanks again man!
copa @ Apr 15th 2008 12:47PM
Trev, thanks for clearing that up. I was obviously misinformed, please mod my original post down to the half-heart it deserves.
In my (weak) defense, Ryan explicitly stated on a podcast last year that the online component would be a separate, paid offering, so I wasn't completely pulling that out of my ass.
And I still stand by my MGS4: Prologue proposal.
lame-o @ Apr 15th 2008 12:25PM
Catapults!!! That's a radical idea:) Total Bungie ripoff. As far as the other stuff, COD 4 rules and it's hard to beat. I hope the single player is good, because that's the only thing I care about as of now.
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 15th 2008 12:28PM
Then go back to playing COD4 and don't worry about MGO ¬_¬
SUPER DESU @ Apr 15th 2008 12:40PM
Sorry, I was using "manupults" in Quake a looooong time ago.
FOXHOUND @ Apr 15th 2008 12:58PM
You were also using guns in Contra, but it looks like a long list of games seem to have popped up... "copying" that. People'll nit-pick *anything*, it seems.
JimmyHACK @ Apr 15th 2008 3:35PM
please.... let's not even start to mention Metal gear Solid inspired moments in halo such as the rush escape ending in halo1/3 or the fighting while going up/down huge elevator lifts...
FOXHOUND @ Apr 15th 2008 3:45PM
To avoid a fiery blaze of comment flaming fun here... I actually think SUPER METROID popularized that sort of battling and escape(though MG2:SOLID SNAKE did have slight battle & chase sequence against Big Boss).
Martez @ Apr 15th 2008 12:48PM
Good gravy, not only do you need a Konami ID, but when you create it you also have to create an additional Game ID that cannot be the same. Which ID name actually shows up where? Is the Konami ID just a login and the Game ID what would appear over your head in the game? Confusing.
Whatever, I signed up and just stuck a period or two in the Konami ID. I am primed and ready for this beta.
upz @ Apr 15th 2008 2:50PM
Okay, here we go:
What is a KONAMI ID?
A KONAMI ID is your own unique ID which allows you to use online services provided by the KONAMI Group.
Registering a KONAMI ID is free of charge.
A GAME ID is a unique login ID which is used for ONLINE titles produced by the KONAMI group.
METAL GEAR ONLINE PREMIERE β Requires GAME ID
Martez @ Apr 15th 2008 3:06PM
Thank you.
Varone @ Apr 15th 2008 12:52PM
8 character minimum on registering a konami ID, and then there is a seperate game ID which has to be different. None of my online names are over 8 characters so thinking of two was pretty tough. I went for guerrilla_in_the_midst (like stealth in the middle of a battlefield, get it!!) as my konami ID in the end.
21st april to 6th may will be a good time to be a european MGSFanboy. I was getting a bit worried because my local GAME still didn't have any pre-order details when I went there a couple of weeks ago, so the news that it's completely open is great.
I wonder if they will be seperating the regions though. Would like to play with my american buddies.

Anyone having trouble creating a Game ID? The main Konami ones fine but i just get:
Please enter a GAME ID password 4-16 numbers in length.
Please enter a GAME ID password (Reenter to confirm) 4-16 numbers in length.
Even though i've entered them in the spaces?
NATO_Duke @ Apr 15th 2008 1:46PM
"GAME ID password 4-16 numbers in length." - This one can only be numbers. I am betting thats your issue.
