Hudson confirms WiiWare shooter Star Soldier R for North America

Hudson certainly hasn't been shy about showing its affections for WiiWare, with the company doing all but making a mix tape for the Wii's upcoming digital download service. Now, after confirming plans to bring Tetris and Bomberman to WiiWare, Hudson has announced plans to release yet another downloadable classic property in Star Soldier R. The game, which launched in Japan alongside WiiWare in March, will be making its North American debut once the service launches later this year.
The game is the latest in Hudson's long-running Star Soldier franchise of overhead shooters that began in the mid-1980s for the NES, of which there are four titles available over the Wii's Virtual Console: Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Blazing Lazers and Star Soldier. Describing the game as a "tournament-style outer space shooter," Hudson notes that this latest shooter will focus on achieving high scores in a Quick Shot mode, as well as in both 2-minute and 5-minute modes, giving players "just enough time" to fight through a couple levels and wrestle with the bosses waiting patiently at the other end. Try not to disappoint.

Day 1 purchase. I've already holding Wii Points for this and Dr. Mario (and I really should buy some more for World of Goo and Lost Winds...)

Finally a wiiware title worth considering.
Alex @ Apr 16th 2008 2:56PM
Small nitpick--Blazing Lazers isn't a Star Soldier game. It was loosely based on the Japanese film Gunhed.

Honestly, paying $8 for two timed modes might not be for me. It seems 'incomplete' ( for lack of a better term) for a guy such as myself, since I've never been the kind of guy who goes for hi scores and whatnot. I know some people are into that kind of thing (and understandably so) but I might be better off going for one of the games on VC.

So where are we storing all these WiiWare titles?
Surely not on the internal 512mb memory.
I smell an E3 hard drive announcement.
PojoMofo @ Apr 16th 2008 3:10PM
Duh, SD cards!! Hello!!!!
Whats the big deal? you d/l it, play it, back it up to the SD card, then if you want to play it again, you clear something else off to make room for whatever you want to put back on, then put it back on, and play
easy as can be
AJ @ Apr 16th 2008 3:17PM
So how many SD cards to you want lying around? And no, that's not easy as can be for the average consumer. Why do you think Harmonix isn't doing DLC for Rock Band? Because nobody wants to store their songs on SD cards and swap them out when they want to play them. And the fact that you can't pull data from an SD card in game or from the channels without transferring doesn't help. If they had that feature it wouldn't be an issue, but they don't so it is.
jorojoserojas @ Apr 16th 2008 3:24PM
I think pojo was being sarcastic.
SoulBlade @ Apr 16th 2008 3:33PM
Yea... while I don't want a collection of SD cards, they're getting cheaper, so at least that's good. But yes, I agree... if the Wii really wants to have all this nice DLC that the other consoles enjoy, it will need a way to attach a hard drive.

I swear these guys have been waiting to release these games with baited breath, holding off until Nintendo let them. There's just a surprising amount of them.
hhserv @ Apr 16th 2008 4:54PM
this was already confirmed in GI the other day.
Martez @ Apr 16th 2008 4:07PM
Nintendo doesn't need to release a hard drive add-on. They just need to enable USB-powered hard drives. I want to use my Passport, dammit.
Though even then they should release a Wii-ish HD for all the dumb soccer moms that don't understand technology (like the Wii-specific SD cards or even the Memory Stick Duos that have a little PSP logo on them as if it means anything).
bender @ Apr 16th 2008 4:37PM
Okay, I'm getting really excited about WiiWare now. I'd like a hard drive now please. :)
wehooo @ Apr 16th 2008 4:58PM
That actually looks good.
