Namco Bandai to bring original Soul Calibur to XBLA

While July 29 will finally let us settle the age old question asking who would win in a fight, an undead pirate or a Sith lord, Namco Bandai's plans for fighting game enthusiasts do not end with Soul Calibur IV. The company confirmed plans this evening to re-release the original Dreamcast fighter over Xbox Live Arcade this summer as well.

Namco Bandai has shed little light on what we can expect from the port, revealing only that it will include all of the original cast, with Arcade, Training, and Survival modes on top of the obligatory local Versus mode. Additionally, the company has only confirmed leaderboards, leaving us to wonder if the release will let us take the Dreamcast classic online as we party like it's 1999.

I dunno Shmil, I wouldn't be surprised at this point. They've managed some very off-the-wall shit for XBLA thus far.

well both of those are coming to XBLA, they've been announced already. Getting them out sometime in the next decade would be nice though :-\

It was sometime last year. They seem to be taking their sweet time with them though

You know, for one of the best fighting games of all time, I could really care less. It's odd. I guess the DC version is just good enough, I don't even think the addition of online fights would really sell me on it.

I'll be there for the HDness of it all. Plus, my tired DC would like to retire eventually I'm sure... and with XBLA releases over the past few months... this might soon be possible...

JGR, SC5, Chu Chu Rockets, and I'd be set :)

Yeah but Namco does as poorly with the online here as they did with Mr. Driller ONLINE, then it won't be worth the money.

How about some Soul Blade love? I enjoyed that game back in the day.

awesome. I have to admit, Microsoft is doing a lot of good thuings with the downloads. First Ikaruga, and now Soul Caliber, the greatest fighter ever. These are better deals than the overpriced Xbox originals.

A dreamcast game for xbla? That's a pretty high calibre (ugh, couldn't think of another word) title compared to the rest...

That, or my nostalgia or SC2 xbox gfx takes over.

And seriously, can someone point me to SC3? I never ever saw it anywhere.

SC3 only came out on PS2.

Word on the street is that it was horribly unbalanced and not particularly worth playing.

I love Soul Calibur.

Once again, the PS3 gets no love. What's going on? What else does Sony have to do to prove that their system is a worthy competitor to the 360? The PS3 has been doing very well against the 360 since November when the price (finally) dropped.

And Sony's recent improvement to the Store is a sign they are headed in the right direction towards building a better network. Come on Namco.

Yes I agree, we really are getting shafted in terms of content and nobody seems to care, since I suppose our numbers are much lower than the 360s.

Sony consoles have the Tekken series. :D

I think Namco's showing Sony plenty of love with that exclusive across it's platforms, save for Tekken DS. Plus, the PS2 got Soul Calibur 3 as an exclusive. Also, Sony got Ridge Racer 7.... okay, that may not be so much of a big deal, but it's an exclusive all the same.

I would love to see Tekken on the 360. (Would save me from getting a PS3) I would love for the PS3 to get a port of Soul Calibur as well. But it seems that Namco only gives a customized kind of love to individual brands of consoles.

Who knows? This could just be a timed exclusive, time will tell.

The game that started it all...I can FINALLY open that bottle of nostalgia(1999) I was saving for a special occasion ;).

Actually, this ISN'T the game that started it all. The first game would be SoulEdge (or Soul Blade, as the US PS1 version was renamed for some odd reason). SoulCalibur is the second game in the series. :P

That is pretty hot sh*t. I get excited in all the right places every time the Dreamcast legacy is kept alive...Unfortunately I only have a PS3....and that MoFo gave me the friggin Yellow light of Despair a few weeks ago.

you've obviously never looked at the titles of XBLA. Yes there are a lot of simple puzzle games or multiple top-down shooters. Might i suggest Rez HD?

1. It's coming out for both 360 and PS3.

2. You neglected the mention of a new scrolling shooter, Infinitum, in the press release.

Actually, the official press release only mentions an XBLA version of the game. So no PSN version to speak of.

And I might not be the author of this post, but I personally feel that having one of the greatest fighting games of all time on XBLA is newsworthy enough on its own. Now all I need are XBLA versions of Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi and Chu Chu Rocket, and I can die a happy, happy man.

My mistake. I posted it backwards. Infinitum is coming out as well, for 360 and PS3.

Seriously Joystiq Crew, is there a way we can quickly alert you to these people doing nothing but advertising (poorly at that) these stupid things? It's like that guy who keeps coming around with the freeps3.com shit.

I loved the Dreamcast version and so being able to play this game in HD is going to be awesome. I do feel sorry for people that only have a PS3 though. But may be if people ask Namco real nice they will allow this game to be on the PS3 too. But if not at least I can play it on my good old 360. That I love.

I play Soul Caliber on my dreamcast in HD all the time.. its called VGA mode. runs at 480p... are they talking about 720 or higher?

C'mon guys, we all know it's called Soulcalibur now. That whole "spacing" thing is so last generation.

It's SoulCalibur. If you're anal-retentive about the spacing, I can be for the upper-case C.
As for the announcement... that's great, but I'll stick on the Dreamcast with a VGA Box and 2 Arcade Sticks (it didn't age much, for a welcome to the stage of history).
