Team Fortress 2 unlockable Medic weapons detailed

Team Fortress 2 took center stage at a Valve-sponsored pizza party in San Francisco last night. Well, to be precise, the team-based shooter's new Goldrush map and unlockable Medic weapons took center stage, and the pizza provided just the right ambiance. ShackNews got their pizza-stained hands on the new offerings, and also had a chance to talk with Valve's Robin Walker about plans for unlockable weapons for the other classes (they should be coming "faster"), difficulty in balancing new weapons (there's a "trade-off"), and plans for other news maps with the Payload gameplay like Goldrush ("you have a moving fortress").

The medic is the first class to get the new weapons – unlock a series of class-based achievements to earn each of the three new toys, including the Blutsaugher ("a new syringe gun" that draws health from enemies), the Critzcrieg (a "new medigun" that switches up the ubercharge), and the Ubersaw (melee attacks charge your medigun). The update should hit sometime in April; still no word on whether any TF2 downloadable content will make it to the consoles.

Thank god there isn't some sort of freak Spartan class in TF2, otherwise you'd have a video of Meet The Spartans.

I'd hope that the dc made it to the consoles. I had a lot of fun with TF2 and some new weapons would inject some more life into that game in my eyes.

That's the only thing I was thinking as I read the article. Will this make it to consoles, er specifically the 360? I want new maps, new weapons, and new achievements :)

Let me guess it will never ever come to the PS3 because Gabe hates it, Valve hates it, Joystiq hates it, etc. Of course we always get shafted in terms of content and multiplatform releases but who cares since only 10 people own a PS3. : /

Ninja, everyone is out to get you because you own a PS3. When Joystiq posts a fact that doesn't put the PS3 or Sony into a negative light, it's because they're 360 fanboys. When they post something negative about the 360, however, that is just a fact and by no means does it mean that they just aren't biased. Quickly, don your tin hat, a PS3-hate conspiracy is unfolding!

I criticize the PS3 becuase I think it needs criticizing. I don't hate Sony (I own a nice, Sony Brava TV that costs way more then a PS3), and I'm not on Bill Gates payroll. I just think that everything done with the PS3 was wrong. The hardware is wrong, the price is wrong, the marketing is wrong and there's not enough games for it. I own a Wii, a 360 and a games PC, because they are less wrong. Fix the games and price thing and I might buy a PS3. Until then, me and anyone else that can think for themselves are going to avoid the black monolith.

I'll buy either a 360 or PS3 next month, my bro wants the PS3 because of MGS4 and some other exclusives, also had only Playstation consoles. The 360 is tempting because of the better multiplat games.

I'm still a MS Windows fan though. : )

Your right, I did sound whiny in my first comment. But I do feel PS3 owners deserve whatever content the 360 gets. I am tired of it getting shafted in content and multi-platform titles. PS3 owners are human and have feelings too!

Sony has made many mistakes but the PS3 is improving, I wanna root for you PS3, go go!

I wish they would hurry up with it for christ sake.. I'm getting tired of waiting.
If it comes out later this month, I doubt anyone will be playing with GTA4 projected to sell better then Halo3 and make like 600 million dollars the first weekend.

The Medic Syringe gun is not laugh matter,I have killed a lot of enemies with it. Is more effective than the Sniper “weenie” sub-machinegun.

I suppose those Syringes must be infected with AIDS.

Yeah...I was going to but the Standalone but since GTA4 is out in 10 days(+ I'm getting GH3 for my birthday really soon) I'll probably pass for now.Oh and are the wep names for real? Ubersaw XD!

I couldn't be happier about the new medic unlockable upgrades. The medic is my class of choice and I can't wait to get my hands on these bad-boys and see what they can do.

That being said, I feel for the other classes in the game that have to wait for their upgrades. It's gonna really suck if each classes upgradeables take as long to get into the game as the medics has. How long has it been since they announced this? It's probably been a few months at least, and if it takes this long for each one of the other classes upgradables to be finished, I don't think there'll be many people still around by the time the last ones are in.

They are definitely on the right track, TF2 is one hell of a fun shooter and all it's lacking, IMO, is some kind of progression ala BF2, CoD4 etc. They just need to get it done faster so there are still people to play the content when they get it in game.

That remains to be seen. I really do hope that the rest come post-haste.

Hell, I enjoy TF2 so much, I would even pay expansion pack prices for a complete weapon upgrade system delivered in a (somewhat) timely manner.

I really don't like the idea of implementing new weapons, especially unlockables. The game is already out, it's fairly balanced, where it wasn't it has been patched.

Adding new content might get some people to come back and play a few more rounds, but if the new content is flawed it'll get more people to leave the game pretty quick...

I dunno, weapon upgrades? Didn't expect that! But I guess if they really want more people playing the medic, that'll do the trick. I personally have always enjoyed being the medic (especially if there is a good heavy to get up behind- I MEAN uber).

Does anyone know if the career achievements (i.e. heal x amount in total) will be retroactive? So in other words, if I've already healed 5 and the achievement were for 7, would I start at 5 or 0 toward it? (I know 5 and 7 are ridiculous numbers but it's just for the example)

It's kind of nice that PC is getting the stuff before consoles (as opposed to the other way around). It seems like lately devs have been focusing on releasing new content for consoles and ignoring or delaying PC updates (COD4?!). I'm sure its related to the open architecture of PC preventing microtransactions for content, but still its nice. I own all consoles, but I usually opt for the PC version of a game if it exists since its usually graphically superior on my hardware and controls better (x360 controller or kb/mouse). It will be a sad day when PC games become inferior (or nonexistant) simply because companies want to lock people into the pricing schemes of console DLC. I applaud Valve for rewarding their loyal PC fanbase. Valve FTW!
