The Sims surpasses 100 million units sold worldwide

The idea of 100 million of anything is difficult for us to wrap our brains around, so we cornered Rod Humble, the brand's studio head, to pick his noodle on The Sims, particularly with regards to the franchise's expansion-heavy history. So, with pets, night-life, and even magic tricks to pick from, what add-ons do players continue to ask for that's not yet available? Says Humble, "Right now our players are keen to playing an expansion pack that focuses on living in a big city...other ideas I've seen in the community include a rave/party pack and science fiction pack." Little green sims? We can support that.
Look for the complete interview with the EA exec on The Sims franchise, expansions, and where it goes from here later today.

Back in the year 2000, I used to love this game.
Typing "year 2000" still feels futuristic to me, sometimes.

You know what was REALLY funny back then? The Y2K panic.
ScottG13 @ Apr 16th 2008 9:03AM
I'll admit it. I bought the first one. 1999, I think? Man...
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 16th 2008 9:37AM
I have teh second, play it when I'm in the mood, but it gets old fast.
JAH75157 @ Apr 16th 2008 10:10AM
it's because all of us have gotten our girlfriends into this game so that we can play ours in peace.

Statement 1: The Sims was bought for gamers' girlfriends.
Implication 1: Gamers have girlfriends.

I bought The Sims 2 so I could play the Sims 2. I love The Sims and I make no appologies for it. That game is brilliant.
JAH75157 @ Apr 16th 2008 11:08AM

The Sims 3 : Finish the Laundry
Rated "R"

I always thought this number was very unfair.
EA managed to get the Sims packaged with a lot of computer deals meaning you buy a new dell and get the sims etc.
A lot of people I have found did not even know they owned the sims when they recieved their new computer
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 16th 2008 12:07PM
I am not ashamed to admit that I had owned and bought the first and second Sims, despite my sister always hogging the computer as a result.
But we also have to admit that the Sims is somewhat similar to playing Barbie.
Kujel @ Apr 16th 2008 1:20PM
This shit shouldn't be even listed on this site, it's not a god damn fucking video game and I get really fucking pissed off when dumb shits call it that. IT FAILS THE FUCKING DEFINITION!
Cheese Muffin @ Apr 16th 2008 2:46PM
Alright then, tell us in your own words what is and isn't a video game, so Joystiq can bring you news that you want.
I don't really see how it's not a video game, other than the fact you don't seem to like it. I don't like Halo but I don't go around complaining that there was too much Halo related news.
Kujel @ Apr 16th 2008 2:52PM
A Video game is: 1st it must run on a system with a input/output (I/O) system, 2nd it must have game play: a series of tasks/activities with a clearly defined goal (points, mission objectives, boss fights, etc.), 3rd it can't be possible in real life (relative to the age in which it's created) and/or is too dangerous to do for entertainment.
bnpederson @ Apr 16th 2008 4:00PM
Wow, that third part is a really stupid definition of a video game. Pinball video games are still video games, despite being able to play pinball on a pinball table. Wii Sports and Wii Play are still video games, regardless of your ability to go to a bowling alley or a ski slope. Hell, Tiger Wood's Golf and Madden are obviously video games and yet I can go play golf or American football if I want to.
Not to mention, even going with your definition The Sims is a video game. After all, I can't become a woman in real life, and yet that's quite possible in The Sims.
In summation: you, sir, have an effed up definition of a video game.
Microswirl @ Apr 16th 2008 4:12PM
"must run on a system with a input/output"
The Sims series, having been released on PC and nearly every console/portable, has more inputs/outputs than most games, including analog sticks, touchscreens, mice, keyboards, TVs, Monitors, and lots and lots of buttons.
"clearly defined goal"
Say hello to E.T. and Superman 64, both of which are still videogames.
"it can't be possible in real life"
Why?
"too dangerous to do for entertainment"
Right... like Tetris...
Kujel @ Apr 17th 2008 1:47AM
bnpederson, Microswirl you guys seem a little confused, let me make it clearer:1st bnpederson pinball "games" can count as you are the pinball machine or can't count as they are just digital pinball games. 2nd Wii Sports is not a video game it is a sports simulator, Wii play has some games in it though. 3rd in the sims you don't become anything you simulate a life nothing more. 4th microswirl just because a simulator runs on a computer or a DS means jack shit the DS web browser runs on a DS but it isn't a video game. 5th just because someone calls it a video game doesn't make it one, I could say the sky is purple all I like but it wont make it purple. 6th the purpose of a video game is a way to escape reality but never actually put yourself in harms way, so if you can do it in real life or it's not life threatening your a loser who wastes everybody's time.
Microswirl @ Apr 17th 2008 3:39AM
The Sims is game. Everyone knows it's a game, Kujel. Stop trying to justify your stupidity. It doesn't matter how many times you spew expletives with the Caps Lock on or arbitrarily place your rambling thoughts into categories of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You're not making any sense and you're convincing anyone.
Kujel @ Apr 17th 2008 5:14AM
Trying to claim a simulator is a game doesn't make it a game it only make you look like a little girl.
jman @ Apr 16th 2008 1:52PM
wow..i used to love this game....especially after adding living it up....i think that was the name of it......but anyways i had to stop playing when i realized the was no way to beat the game....i even went through the rouble of not cheating and getting the best job possible for the law enforcement carrear.....good times
Robert @ Apr 16th 2008 6:29PM
Yeh when you only have one game this is good but theres about a billion sims games is that really an achievement, i don't think so
Jonny @ Apr 17th 2008 2:28AM
Its not really an achievement.
I mean, there's like a crapton of expansion and addon packs.
Hell, there's an expansion set that gives you H&M brand clothing to put on your Sim.
And it sells for 20 bucks.
>____>
wixostrix @ Apr 18th 2008 3:14AM
yea, there are a lot of expeansion packs but if the base game wasn't the least bit interesting then the expansions wouldn't have sold. so i would say it's an achievement. dividing 100 million by all the editions available is proly more than most games sell.
