Back in the year 2000, I used to love this game.

Typing "year 2000" still feels futuristic to me, sometimes.

Statement 1: The Sims was bought for gamers' girlfriends.

I bought The Sims 2 so I could play the Sims 2. I love The Sims and I make no appologies for it. That game is brilliant.

I always thought this number was very unfair.

EA managed to get the Sims packaged with a lot of computer deals meaning you buy a new dell and get the sims etc.

A lot of people I have found did not even know they owned the sims when they recieved their new computer

I am not ashamed to admit that I had owned and bought the first and second Sims, despite my sister always hogging the computer as a result.

But we also have to admit that the Sims is somewhat similar to playing Barbie.

Alright then, tell us in your own words what is and isn't a video game, so Joystiq can bring you news that you want.

I don't really see how it's not a video game, other than the fact you don't seem to like it. I don't like Halo but I don't go around complaining that there was too much Halo related news.

A Video game is: 1st it must run on a system with a input/output (I/O) system, 2nd it must have game play: a series of tasks/activities with a clearly defined goal (points, mission objectives, boss fights, etc.), 3rd it can't be possible in real life (relative to the age in which it's created) and/or is too dangerous to do for entertainment.

Wow, that third part is a really stupid definition of a video game. Pinball video games are still video games, despite being able to play pinball on a pinball table. Wii Sports and Wii Play are still video games, regardless of your ability to go to a bowling alley or a ski slope. Hell, Tiger Wood's Golf and Madden are obviously video games and yet I can go play golf or American football if I want to.

Not to mention, even going with your definition The Sims is a video game. After all, I can't become a woman in real life, and yet that's quite possible in The Sims.

In summation: you, sir, have an effed up definition of a video game.

"must run on a system with a input/output"

The Sims series, having been released on PC and nearly every console/portable, has more inputs/outputs than most games, including analog sticks, touchscreens, mice, keyboards, TVs, Monitors, and lots and lots of buttons.

"clearly defined goal"

Say hello to E.T. and Superman 64, both of which are still videogames.

"it can't be possible in real life"

Why?

"too dangerous to do for entertainment"

Right... like Tetris...

bnpederson, Microswirl you guys seem a little confused, let me make it clearer:1st bnpederson pinball "games" can count as you are the pinball machine or can't count as they are just digital pinball games. 2nd Wii Sports is not a video game it is a sports simulator, Wii play has some games in it though. 3rd in the sims you don't become anything you simulate a life nothing more. 4th microswirl just because a simulator runs on a computer or a DS means jack shit the DS web browser runs on a DS but it isn't a video game. 5th just because someone calls it a video game doesn't make it one, I could say the sky is purple all I like but it wont make it purple. 6th the purpose of a video game is a way to escape reality but never actually put yourself in harms way, so if you can do it in real life or it's not life threatening your a loser who wastes everybody's time.

The Sims is game. Everyone knows it's a game, Kujel. Stop trying to justify your stupidity. It doesn't matter how many times you spew expletives with the Caps Lock on or arbitrarily place your rambling thoughts into categories of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You're not making any sense and you're convincing anyone.

Trying to claim a simulator is a game doesn't make it a game it only make you look like a little girl.

Its not really an achievement.

I mean, there's like a crapton of expansion and addon packs.

Hell, there's an expansion set that gives you H&M brand clothing to put on your Sim.

And it sells for 20 bucks.

yea, there are a lot of expeansion packs but if the base game wasn't the least bit interesting then the expansions wouldn't have sold. so i would say it's an achievement. dividing 100 million by all the editions available is proly more than most games sell.
