Spider-Man: Web of Shadows confirmed for all current platforms
It seems we'll be donning our tight-fitting Spider-Man costumes and matching cavalier attitudes sooner than expected, as we head off to the store to purchase Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. The humiliation better be worth it this time, Activision! Confirming earlier rumors, the publisher has announced (via IGN) that Spidey's next "free-roaming, open-ended" adventure will be hitting the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, DS, PSP and PC, courtesy of Shaba Games and Treyarch.
Not much is known about the title, but the official website hints that you'll be able to influence the game's "direction and outcome" and choose which characters in the Marvel universe to ally yourself with. The central theme seems to be "control," though as the trailer (embedded after the break) rightly points out, we can't know what it really means ... until we lose it.

Looks good
supakoopa @ Apr 17th 2008 5:08PM
Cool, I've never gotten the first comment before.
Shagittarius @ Apr 17th 2008 5:32PM
And oh what a comment it was, the mastery you command of the english language, never before have I heard two words paired together quite as gracefully.
The first word 'looks' evokes the sensation of seeing something.
The second word 'good' reminds me of many a brilliantly lit sunset sky.
By combing those two words together you have truely earned the honor of being the first to comment.
and you touched me...in a good way.
samfish @ Apr 17th 2008 5:35PM
You can touch me any way you want, baby...

Hands off! Mine!

Shag you really are an asshole.
Don't ever stop.

shaggitarius. Best. Comment. Ever.
You are my hero.
Tiptup300 @ Apr 17th 2008 7:45PM
I don't know about you guys, but I was seriously looking forward to not getting this game.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 18th 2008 12:18AM
I don't know I liked more his comment about his doubtful sexual orientation but this one is not bad.
Zertoss @ Apr 17th 2008 5:06PM
Looks interesting. Hopefully this is one of the good Spiderman games.
Gunner McGrath @ Apr 17th 2008 5:07PM
Treyarch = Trash. I predict this will be a brief rental, at best.
scott willis @ Apr 17th 2008 5:12PM
ehh Treyarch did a great job with spider 2 , they obv had to rush spider 3 out or something tho :o
Mr Khan @ Apr 17th 2008 5:29PM
From what i recall, Treyarch only sucks when you set them in a head to head contest with Infinity Ward
Few could come out looking good by comparison in that contest
kanweil @ Apr 17th 2008 5:11PM
From Spidey's costume, it looks like its going to be based off the comic book. Is Shaba or Treyarch developing the next-gen versions?
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 17th 2008 5:10PM
Ugh and Shit-arch is making this too, flop confirmed.
bluezy @ Apr 17th 2008 5:47PM
Wow, how creative.
Benny @ Apr 17th 2008 7:43PM
I see what you did there!
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 17th 2008 7:57PM
Sorry, I'm not Superman: I can't see through shit.
So I can't see what he did there.
theturtle363 @ Apr 17th 2008 11:17PM
Treyarch isnt bad. They made the second Spider-Man game that was on the original playstation. What was it, Enter Electro or something. That was awesome
riggs @ Apr 18th 2008 8:19AM
even Gay-arch couldve been better than that....
Nate @ Apr 17th 2008 5:13PM
Any game that comes out on ALL platforms, is just doomed to suck. Come on. DS and 360/PS3? How can those possibly be the same game?
Shmil @ Apr 17th 2008 6:25PM
Wasn't CoD4 for PS3/360/DS?
Autopsy15 @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:15PM
Ya, but the DS version blew chunks.
ThePremierAssassin @ Apr 17th 2008 5:18PM
SWEET!
Well at least for now...thats what I said about Battlefield: Bad Company when it was first announced and now I can't stand the thought of that game...
Heres to hoping this game turns out alright.
But wait a sec. Isn't it Treyarch who made COD3 that everyone hates?
Negativecool @ Apr 17th 2008 5:18PM
....
Does the Dreamcast still count as current?...No?...ok:(
samfish @ Apr 17th 2008 5:23PM
This might be the lamest subtitle ever for a game.
ThePremierAssassin @ Apr 17th 2008 5:28PM
I sorta like it...
Better than Friend or Foe...now thats corny. This sounds like it might actually have some depth to it.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 17th 2008 5:34PM
Friend or foe sounded like the title for either a bad country song or a Nickleback song.
Web of Shadows sounds more like the title for a cheesy movie, yu-gi-oh card or a especial move for a fighting character.
Negativecool @ Apr 17th 2008 5:57PM
I would have gone with Spiderman: World Wide Web.
Scott @ Apr 17th 2008 5:29PM
what's the countdown at the top of the official site? it says 13 days. (pardon my ignorance if it's something obvious that I missed)
Corey B @ Apr 17th 2008 5:34PM
ah, activision continues it's trend of milking a successful franchise with yearly iterations....
upz PSN: heypaul @ Apr 17th 2008 5:34PM
So is H.G. Wells writing the script?
embassy @ Apr 17th 2008 6:45PM
exactly what i was thinking.
what a straight rip-off.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 17th 2008 5:36PM
Well it doesn't look bad and it could be good.Spiderman games aren't bad but um I'm not sure how to end this sentence but hell I like them.
Activision should go ahead and put their money on a Marvel Zombies game, hell that would sell 1M easily in month.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 17th 2008 5:36PM
I meant: in a month.
Shattercross @ Apr 17th 2008 5:43PM
Yeah, I'd love to see a Marvel Zombies game...maybe based off the volume where Ash from Army of Darkness shows up.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 18th 2008 12:19AM
To be honest I sort of expected more.Ash only made things worst and the ending was weird.
Marvel Werewolves o-0?
OzCatter @ Apr 17th 2008 5:47PM
Is that Mac Tonight attacking the buildings?
Grimes @ Apr 17th 2008 9:18PM
You, sir, WIN!
P.S. as of a couple years ago, Mac Tonight was still making occasional promotional appearances at McDonald's stores in central Illinois.
Dopple Boppler @ Apr 17th 2008 6:05PM
Where's my Ultimate Spider-Man 2? I never read the comics, but that game was the bee's knees. Too bad it was so short.
Spin44 @ Apr 17th 2008 6:32PM
Generally the Spider-Man games that I have played have sucked real hard. I want to try Spider-Man 3 (360) but I heard (from http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/22/193/Spider-Man3/257423) that during the boss battles it's essentially just a button masher. Is that the case, or is there actually skilled involved? I don't want to get a game just to random press buttons during battles, that should be left for games like Street Fighter ;)
deadjesterx @ Apr 17th 2008 6:46PM
Most likely Treyarch is making the next-gen versions and Shaba or whatever is going to make the handhelds.
Treyarch games are trash. And no, I'm not just comparing their CoDs to Infintiy Ward's. Spiderman 3 was horrible. The game was a button-mash fest and the "free-roaming" element in it was a joke. Their games are also buggy as hell. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.
Batzarro(A.K.A Rap-Rock Cameo) @ Apr 17th 2008 6:54PM
Does Spidey have to "finish the fight"?
Seishino @ Apr 17th 2008 6:58PM
Why exactly would you want a "free-roaming, open-ended" spiderman? Don't you want dastardly villains, climactic battles, and an epic story arc brought home by Spiderman overcoming his internal failings as a human being?
Open ended just sounds... beige.
Easo @ Apr 18th 2008 6:51AM
Because in the mind of most gamers minds, the terms "free roaming" and "non-linear" have become equated with good games.
I agree with you though. Liner game play is the best way to tell a story. There is a reason that choose your own adventure books don't make it on the NY Times best seller lists.
Easo @ Apr 18th 2008 6:53AM
"Because in the mind of most gamers minds"
I suck :(
crown me good, real good! @ Apr 17th 2008 7:33PM
spider-man sucks. my mother sucks.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Apr 17th 2008 8:27PM
I know. It took me 3 days to get her to do it.
The Doctor @ Apr 17th 2008 7:26PM
So, it looks like some kind of symbiote invasion. Maybe a remake of the amazing psone/n64 game?
