9 million answer Call of Duty 4, DLC breaks records
Oscar, Mike, Golf! Infinity Ward announced today that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has sold over 9 million copies worldwide since release. The company followed up that news by stating the new Variety Map Pack (costing $10) allegedly set a new Xbox marketplace record by having over 1 million downloads in its first 9 days of release. The map pack will be available on the US PSN next Thursday, Europe on May 4.
Infinity Ward also released some statistics (we lovez numbers) that over 30 million sessions and 30 million hours have been logged since the new maps released, which is about 1.9 billion minutes of nuggets noob tubing lost to the ether. COD4 has been in a battle for Xbox Live supremacy against Halo 3, with the two titles switching first and second place over the last couple months.

It will be a lot more once the PS3 version is out...is it the 24th yet?

Call of Duty 4 : Call in Sick
PojoMofo @ Apr 18th 2008 11:40AM
IDK, I already have to come up with a mystery "virus" on the 29th, I dont think I could pull that much time of off work.
Haon @ Apr 18th 2008 12:16PM
Ive already put in for 2 days starting the 29th...hope my coworkers dont figure it out or ill never hear the end of it.
Travis @ Apr 18th 2008 11:39AM
$10 x 1 Million. ... Damn!
PojoMofo @ Apr 18th 2008 11:42AM
for 4 maps...and the PS3 hasnt even hit yet.
After the GOTY edition is played out. They should come out with a COD4: Cash Cow addition.
Owyn @ Apr 18th 2008 11:44AM
And they still won't give it to us PC'ers for free.
Conglomerate bastards!
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 18th 2008 11:44AM
LOL Pojo +1
sicsided @ Apr 18th 2008 11:42AM
god damn it bring it back home to the PC! I want Carantan again!
^chi^ @ Apr 18th 2008 12:06PM
The map Chinatown (included in the Map Pack) is pretty much an exact replica of Carentan.
sicsided @ Apr 18th 2008 12:36PM
exactly, that's what I want. Seriously, one of the best maps from CoD1 and we can't even have it on PC... :(
Shawn @ Apr 18th 2008 12:44PM
don't worry pc peeps, there are people replicating those maps for pc, not to mention the dozens of other free maps out and coming out..no worries
PojoMofo @ Apr 18th 2008 11:44AM
I personally dont get nube tubed a whole lot (unless Im playing wet works)
wscbrown @ Apr 18th 2008 12:19PM
Its the grenade spamming that gets me most... Its incredibly rare to see the rocket launcher in action for some reason... but once you unlock 3x frag grenades, its game over for classy hardcore games.
I have a 1:2 K/D Ratio (Bad, I know), but I think 50-60% of my deaths are from grenade spamming and airstrikes.
Jomolungma @ Apr 18th 2008 11:46AM
And then April 29th came along and COD4 sessions went from the millions to the thousands overnight...
ThePremierAssassin @ Apr 18th 2008 11:49AM
You really think so?
Personally I'll give GTA's MP experience a try but I honestly don't expect it to draw me away from the little bit of time I've spared for Halo 3 AND COD4 since my life is consumed by Lost Odyssey as of late...
Jomolungma @ Apr 18th 2008 11:53AM
Well, it HAS to take some kind of hit. I'm sure COD4 will still have lots of devotees, but through simple math GTA IV has to eat in to both Halo and COD4 numbers.
Cyro @ Apr 18th 2008 12:12PM
@Assassin:
I know what you mean. I can't drag myself away from Lost Odyssey. I love this game man.
RudyHuxtable @ Apr 18th 2008 11:49AM
between CoD and GTA, I'm fairly certain my floating holidays will all be accounted for before 6/1.
propanol @ Apr 18th 2008 11:53AM
... and unlike Halo 3, CoD4 deserves being #1. It's a well-engineered game that did not need massive hype in order to sell big numbers.
Gaucho @ Apr 18th 2008 12:04PM
CoD4 had pretty significant Hype, it just didnt have a predecessor (CoD1-3 have nothing to do with this one) like Halo and Halo 2. Though (obviously) the games have nothing to do with each other, its like the hype that Little Big Planet has compared to Metal Gear Solid 4 or BioShock compared to Halo 3. IMO
Obie @ Apr 18th 2008 12:14PM
COD4 did not have dioramas or mountain dew ads.
I think the game generated its own success, and was not shoved down peoples throats like Halo 3.
Gaucho @ Apr 18th 2008 1:02PM
@ Obie
I concede the point. I forgot about "Gamer Fuel". sweet, tastes like sugar coated sugar and reduces your sperm count but hey! Master Chief is on the label.
Lars @ Apr 18th 2008 4:23PM
"unlike Halo 3, CoD4 deserves being #1"
Nail on head man. They both had lots of hype though. Halo is the "Blood" of this generation. If you can't make it good, just throw lots of money at advertising. Anyone remember than game called Blood? It was like a Doom clone 10 years after Doom 2, and hyped to hell.
Gaucho @ Apr 18th 2008 11:54AM
I haven't had too much time to play because of work and this being my final semester in college (bastard professors arent making it easy). But this map pack is a shining example of how games can be just as bad as crack. The weekends are the only time I can actually get some sleep as during the week I only get 3 hours max, but thanks to CoD I get less than that on the weekends. This lack of sleep makes me jittery since I'm all caffeinated at work . . . which makes my crack metaphor even more relevant
Terpy @ Apr 18th 2008 9:47PM
I know what you mean, after I bought the map pack I put 20hours of online gaming on in a week, and its all I thought about at work.
Nein @ Apr 18th 2008 12:07PM
I like both Halo 3 and COD4, but I'm not really even considering buying either map pack right now. Basically MP only, 3 or 4 maps, not worth it for $10 to me.
Anyways, as long as games like COD4 are still bestsellers, gaming still has a chance. The game isn't a miracle, but it is good all around.
Shad3Wolf @ Apr 18th 2008 12:07PM
"with the two titles switching first and second place over the last couple months."
Really? A quick look at Major Nelson's Top 10 history shows CoD4 at #1 for the last 10 weeks. The last time the two traded places were within the first 3 weeks of January...!
nxtiak @ Apr 18th 2008 4:58PM
I agree. I was going to post the same thing. They only swapped places once.
Shad3Wolf @ Apr 18th 2008 5:09PM
It will be interesting to see what they look like next week after a full week of the Legendary map pack having been out, but if there's any truth to these numbers, then, IMO of course, I'm sure it will still be atop the list.
arrrgh @ Apr 18th 2008 12:11PM
Are people STILL talking about halo3? It's not a game, it's an online babysitter for 8 year olds. Or you can hit the single player and shoot some ewoks :D:D:D AWESOME!
On the upside at least a slick game like CoD4 is getting the press and profit, then we can all relax and pretend Halo ended after the first installment as it should have
Cyro @ Apr 18th 2008 12:15PM
You can hate all you want, but Halo 3 is a great game and a lot of people would agree with me.
Im fine that you dont like it, but dont go off saying its crap.
I personally fine Halo 3 Multiplayer more fun than COD4's. But thats just me. I like balanced games.
343 Guilty Fart @ Apr 18th 2008 12:36PM
Honestly I'd rather shoot the ewoks, especially with the 'Ewok Birthday Party' skull turned on. Seriously, CoD4's campaign just has thousands of terrorists shouting 'Jihad Jihad!' running at you endlessly.
After the 4th level it gets tiresome. "Hmm, when I kill all these dozens or respawning terrorists I wonder if there'll be more around the corner?"
The only thing that draws me to CoD4 is the leveling-up mechanic. Other than that I'll stick to Haloz.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 18th 2008 12:40PM
Cyro FTW!!! ;)
Obie @ Apr 18th 2008 12:12PM
I do wonder how many sales the last Halo 3 maps generated, but I know that it did not bring down marketplace like the COD4 maps.
James Lockwood @ Apr 18th 2008 12:27PM
"COD4 has been in a battle for Xbox Live supremacy against Halo 3, with the two titles switching first and second place over the last couple months."
I thought they switched places once, then COD4 gave Halo a severe pwning...
7718 @ Apr 18th 2008 12:42PM
I hope other developers are paying attention to this. If you want to sell tons of units just make your game incredibly immersive and polished to a fine shine. The community at large will devour it.
ncxcstud @ Apr 18th 2008 12:57PM
I swear its only a map pack of 3 maps...I have still yet to play Killhouse...
Scott @ Apr 18th 2008 1:45PM
Play Free-for-all....once you see Killhouse you'll know why....it's soooo tiny....I think it's the smallest but someone said that Shipment still it...I disagree...
rdj75 @ Apr 18th 2008 1:06PM
Now wait a minute, let me defend halo3 for a minute. Yes, I agree that Halo3 got more hype than you can ever imagine, but honestly what else would anyone have microsoft do with their number one franchise? Yes, halo3 can be a playground for kids(cod4 isn't too far behind) but over looking that Halo3 has one hell of an online setup with excellenct gameplay which really set the standard for how online multiplayer games should be. Cod4 developers obviously took what was successfull with halo3 and other games and fine tuned it to their liking, so that being said alot of cod4's succes came from the success of how halo2 and halo3 multiplayer as well as other games were structured.
P.S. And just so everyone know, I have probably logged 6 times as many hours on cod4 vs halo3 and quite frankly people who play halo3 seem to take that game very serious for some odd reason where as cod4 is just fun all around even when getting pwned.
Bouille @ Apr 19th 2008 10:55AM
Sorry there dude, but if you ask me the Halo franchise didn't set any standard when it comes to multiplayer or anything else for that matter. Gameplay wise CoD4 is BF2 without the vehicules set in a standard CS map size. It's basically a Counter-Strike, Battlefield2 mash-up. When it comes to multiplayer woopty doo, Halo has lots and lots of mods. Most of which are rip offs of pre-existing Source-mods like Zombie Panic. Don't get me wrong I enjoy playing Halo2 and 3 they are fun, but they never brought anything new to the genre.
Paul @ Apr 21st 2008 11:52AM
You must be kidding me...
Forge?
Saved freaking films!!!
Matchmaking that actually works!
If COD4 had any of those features, it would be awesome. Until then, Halo 3 takes the MP innovation cake...
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Apr 18th 2008 1:24PM
damn. i know Microsoft must be ecstatic right now considering they have a third party game on their console doing just as well as their first party cash cow. that is alot of money for them.
and its doing pretty good on PS3 too so everyone wins!
The Fuzz 53 @ Apr 18th 2008 1:29PM
Why is it that with so many glaring flaws in the multiplayer aspect of this game (respawning on top of live grenades, enemies respawning behind you after killing them, respawning in somebody's crosshairs, hit detection issues, host migration, etc.) do we never hear about them? We only ever hear praise for this game, but a game like Halo 3, with significantly less fundamental flaws, get lambasted for every minor issue?
rdj75 @ Apr 18th 2008 1:35PM
You really brought up some valid points
The Fuzz 53 @ Apr 18th 2008 1:44PM
Just thought of a few other glaring issues in COD4: respawing in the center of an airstrike zone; giving head shots on people that shot you in the knee; getting killed by your own claymore, while the guy that tripped it walks through unscathed; snipers shooting 3 feet behind you and counting it; shoot a guy and watch him walk 10 feet before dropping dead; people shooting you while they are only half way through a reload (the magazine dropped out of the gun, come on!)
Maybe the kill cam was the worst thing to happen to this game, otherwise I would never notice most of this shit.
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 18th 2008 1:34PM
Impressive... if not surprising.
The Fuzz 53 @ Apr 18th 2008 1:36PM
Same here. I have yet to play the level in the shipping yard either. How do you get these 2 maps to show up?
Todd H. @ Apr 18th 2008 1:38PM
COD4 is the probably the best online MP I've played since owning the original Xbox and the 360, Halo 2 being a close #2, GOW probably #3. I happily dropped my $12.50 for the new maps without hesitation.
I hope other developers realize how successful a quality product can be and try and duplicate there success.
Austin @ Apr 18th 2008 4:33PM
Why bash Halo 3 this topic has nothing to do with it? Also I wouldn't be surprised if this was a lie when Infinity Ward sold 150 million copies they said it was a record when Halo 3 had obviously had 300 million copies sold which bungie never even confirmed sales did. So i wouldn't be overly surprised if this is all a hoax.
