Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe gets confirmation, trailer
We were a little skeptical when the first promotional poster for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe leaked out this morning, but now that GamesRadar has posted up the first trailer for the game our reaction has gone from skepticism to amazement. As in, we're amazed that this thing actually exists.
The high impact, mid-air fight between Sub-Zero and Batman (shown below the break) seems a little out of character for the Dark Knight, who's always been more about calculation and strategy than all out hand-to-hand Kombat. We're also a little worried about how the DC heroes' long-standing prohibition against killing is going to match up with the Mortal Kombat series' famously fatal, er, fatalities. But these kinds of academic nerd-concerns are hard to maintain when watching the concentrated 360- and PS3-fueled awesomeness on display in this video.
[Update: Gamespot has an interview with Project Lead Ed Boon that discusses the game's story and the balancing between the variously super-powered characters. The interview also confirm Superman's and Scorpion's somewhat obvious inclusion in the game. Gamespot's preview has more details]

untitled @ Apr 18th 2008 6:46PM
So much for hoping it was a late april fool's joke. It actually doesn't look that bad :)
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:17PM
So.
This will be the greatest game of all time
FUCK YEAH BATMAN!!!
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 18th 2008 3:32PM
Why did you get minused for that
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 18th 2008 3:44PM
It could be REALLLLLLY good or REALLLY bad.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 18th 2008 8:01PM
Nah more like it could be good or really effing bad.
If its good it could revive the flame in every MK fan and probably compensate for MK:A (Create a fatality was a good idea but I rather have different fatalities that one standard move)if it fails we will never forgive Midway for this monster.
Martez @ Apr 18th 2008 2:17PM
Hm.
Seroth @ Apr 18th 2008 2:20PM
I, for one, am really excited about this game. I expect to be in the minority, however. =[
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:22PM
This trailer has made me excited for this game. Who cares if it doesn't make sense, seeing Bats kick Sub-zero's hard made me wet myself in excitement.
So since the trailer disproved the whole blood thing, let's hope we get some awesome fatalities.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:23PM
I meant Sub Zero's ass.
StarFoxA @ Apr 18th 2008 2:24PM
I saw an interview on GameSpot and the guy was saying that they're getting rid of stage fatalities.
ugg.tryptophan @ Apr 18th 2008 2:48PM
"...Sub-zero's hard made me wet..."; i couldn't resist
Mr Khan @ Apr 18th 2008 3:43PM
Blood would only make it realistic, but fatalities would either severely limit the number of DC fighters who can participate (and since Batman is there, so that option's out) or they are going to break the canon and demeanor of the DC Characters, shatter it, and leave it in tiny pieces as DC fanboys froth in disgust
To its credit though, it was a good trailer
Psaakyrn @ Apr 18th 2008 5:59PM
Unless it (a) isn't cannon, or, (b) is cannon, BUT alternate universe.
lexicon @ Apr 18th 2008 2:22PM
The trailer looks siiiiiiiiiiikkkkk
We want more!
We want more!
Mortal Kombat number 4!
(some will understand the true meaning of that poetic piece)
Silvershotzero @ Apr 18th 2008 4:28PM
EPIC FAIL. This may very well be the worst fighting game of all time. Right away I can tell the graphics will suck, the combat system will be chunky and ..ugh. I dont even want to waste anymore of my life on this pile of feces.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 8:38PM
*gasp*
YOU HAVE THE AMAZING ABILITY TO SEE IN THE FUTURE???
NO WAI!!!
max kingsbury @ Apr 18th 2008 2:24PM
meh
Alien @ Apr 18th 2008 2:23PM
Now thats one impressive trailer ;)
StarFoxA @ Apr 18th 2008 2:24PM
Such a ripoff of Marvel vs. Capcom. facepalm;
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:26PM
How?
because it's a crossover?
Last time I checked, Marvel Vs. Capcom wasn't in 3d, didn't have blood, and didn't have anyone close to the awesomeness that is the goddamn batman. So no it isn't a rip off.
StarFoxA @ Apr 18th 2008 2:30PM
Hmmm... I think it is blatantly obvious.
A. DC and Marvel are both comic book companies
B. DC and Marvel both have incredibly famous superheroes
C. DC and Marvel are enemies, therefore this was bound to come at sometime
And besides, this game probably won't have blood either. In the article on GameSpot, it says that they are aiming for a Teen rating.
And besides, Spider-Man would kick sissy Batman's ass.
VampireHunter Z @ Apr 18th 2008 2:34PM
Okay I admit Batman is the greatest superhero ever but still MvC was a great series. Cyclops was amazing. And this game will never get the respect of MvC2. Try ebaying that now.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:35PM
That still doesn't make it a rip-off. The only similarities is that they are crossovers, and that's it.
For it to be a rip-off the game would have to be:
1. in 2d
2.have 2 vs. 2 fighting(though actually that may happen)
3. Be fast as fucking crazy
4. Be able to do these super crazy that fill up have the screen
From the looks of it, while yes both games have similar concepts(crossovers) DvM looks to play very differently then MvC. So once again, no it's not a rip off.
AND DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE GOD-DAMN TRAILER? WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT WAS, WATER?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:36PM
myy bad.
3vs3 fighting.
DangerMouse @ Apr 18th 2008 3:07PM
MvC was 2v2. MvC2 was 3v3.
TwEE @ Apr 18th 2008 3:08PM
Neither Marvel nor Capcom invented the whole cross over bit..
Marvel and DC are not enemies, I have a pile of Marvel/DC cross over comics that prove that..
Shattercross @ Apr 18th 2008 3:19PM
Um, how about NO?
1. Spiderman's a huge pussy- when he's not crying about something, his ruining his life- the guy's a walking advertisement for summer's eve, Batman would literally tear his tiny ass in half.
2. Capcom didn't invent the crossover, nor do they have a patent on it. Besides, DOES IT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE Marvel vs Capcom?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 3:55PM
@shattercross
Actually he's somewhat right. If Parker was fighting with his true potential, he can literally crush Batman. But the thing is, Spiderman holds back alot during fights. So Bats does have a shot at taking him down.
Victor @ Apr 18th 2008 4:08PM
I bet Pikachu could beat the crap out of Goku.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Apr 18th 2008 4:16PM
I'm going to take that comment as a joke, and laugh and walk away.
Victor @ Apr 18th 2008 4:42PM
I bet you could beat the crap out of me.
Batzarro(A.K.A Rap-Rock Cameo) @ Apr 18th 2008 10:08PM
Goes to show everyone forgot X-Men vs Street Fighter forever...tsk tsk tsk...
The thing is, XVSSF(And Thus MVC) Only existed because Capcom had previously done two Marvel fighters. Now, they only needed to make the sprites for roughtly five fighters, then make it faster and comboier. In that sense, The Capcom crossover is cheaper. It's still hella fun, though...
born2kill @ Apr 18th 2008 2:25PM
Interesting but really, really bizarre. I hope theres a Shoalin Monks sequel in the works too.
FOXHOUND @ Apr 18th 2008 2:30PM
Like a Wii game... despite the graphics, that game was actually pretty fun and the only MK as of recent I enjoyed.
DangerMouse @ Apr 18th 2008 2:26PM
That doesn't look too bad. I hope they put emphasis on character development rather than blood and fatalities like they usually did in the past. I wouldn't mind seeing a dark game, either, with a clever image filter to make it interesting.
chacho89 @ Apr 18th 2008 2:27PM
Batman VS subzero- superman vs kunglao(SP?)
awesome cant wait
DiddlyKong @ Apr 18th 2008 2:29PM
GEEKGASM! I am intrigued.
ComicShaman @ Apr 18th 2008 2:30PM
If they include The Flash, he'll probably be the cheapest character in the game. One button unleashes a 10,000 string combo.
All right, who am I kidding? The game will obviously follow the Marvel vs. Capcom rule of equalizing characters that somehow lets Ryu survive a fight with the Hulk.
StarFoxA @ Apr 18th 2008 2:32PM
Heh, I always just used the Hulk and beat up everyone. XD
Mr Khan @ Apr 18th 2008 4:39PM
Equalizing in crossovers is nothing new, like the interesting deus ex machina they used in the Superman-Madman crossover where Superman lost most of his powers, and Madman received a fraction of Superman's powers
Also Jigglypuff being able to fight Samus in Smash Bros
trask @ Apr 18th 2008 2:31PM
This has NOTHING to do with the MK series, it's all a big cash in... this is such B.S. I am really disappointed... I loved the MK series, this is horrible.
kaneda @ Apr 18th 2008 3:28PM
I share your sentiment, esp after reading not too long ago how the next MK game was gonna be a bit more serious. I was hoping for a reboot along the lines of the Batman Begins restart. Instead looks like more like Batman and Robin.
MK one was a straight forward story, MK 2 added babalities and friendships and the first glimpse of the ridiculousness that is the MK canon, but at least it was fun to play. It was all downhill from there, as far as a story that can be taken seriously.
But I'm _pretty_ sure nobody plays the game for the story, I just miss how intense and visceral MK 1 felt since there was nothing like it at the time. Actually felt more like fighting for your life and less like playing a comic book character.
Ben @ Apr 18th 2008 2:33PM
I still really don't know how to feel about this game. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
phoenix @ Apr 18th 2008 2:34PM
I think I just wet my pants...yep I did.
EbonyDad @ Apr 18th 2008 2:36PM
Talk to me when they release a Marvel v. DC game.
That is the one I am waiting for.
That and Flintstones v. Simpsons.
Mr. Slate FTW!
CHAOS!!!! @ Apr 18th 2008 2:43PM
for me, mk was excelent while it was 2d.
nowadays...
Phil Deez @ Apr 18th 2008 2:44PM
This is easily the worst idea anyone has ever had.
And I'll probably still check it out.
Nytemare @ Apr 18th 2008 3:04PM
Sadly...that's my view too.
I can't really understand the idea of MK against DC, or even want to try to understand it, but I'll play the game anyway cause I like both MK and DC.
beans @ Apr 18th 2008 2:45PM
DC just fucked up big time...
