With all the work that goes into the designing, writing, and programming of a game (especially for a title as hotly anticipated as Capcom's waggle-infused port of the PS2 under-appreciated gem Okami), we assumed that there would be one person at every video game publisher who would give the final retail packaging a once-over, keeping a keen eye out for any typos, printing errors, or hidden watermarks from popular video game news sites. Then again, maybe that's just us.
As is the unfortunate case with the Wii Okami box art -- NeoGAF user Bob Digi discovered that right above a permanent "sticker" promoting the game's high score in Play magazine (an unsightly blemish in its own right) sits a fairly clear IGN watermark, the result of the artwork's background being photoshopped from an image on IGN's Okami PS2 site. Then again, perhaps the game underwent some serious changes in its Nintendo transition, and now features protagonist Amaterasu traveling throughout feudal Japan, devouring the logos of major gaming news sites.
[Thanks, Riven.]

My query would concern why IGN are watermarking an image that they haven't created in the first place. If it was freely available on the web then it's a pointless and somewhat pathetic practice, given that it is somebody else's content.

Geez, this is not even about the Wii itself, yet so many people are like "teh wii sux" on this post.
I have this watermark, just noticed it too. I'm so keeping this forever... to sell at a later date when (inevitably) IGN, Okami, and the Wii itself become old. Probably not IGN for a while though...

how come if you go to AMAZON.com and look at the box art the wolf is turned the opposite way, and there is no watermark??

I can't see the watermark on my copy unless I look for it, so I don't really care. The permanent sticker below it is annoying. Neither, however, prevents me from enjoying the game, which I'm doing despite the internet's objection.

I've gotta buy this game ASAP, just cause I want that boxart error. Those copies'll likely be limited in numbers once Capcom fixes it.

I didn't notice it on the copies we got in, but our copies did have a sticker on the wrapper placed over the Play rating that had the IGN rating "A".

As a Graphic Designer I can easily see how many ways this was done, lol. With tons of deadlines, companies that hire you to do stuff but don't give you art, which doesn't make since. It was probably done by an outside design studio that had a day or two to do it. Obviously the designer wasn't given the correct art.

There may be a possibility that there are different covers in different regions of the US.
But I do know as a fact that the boxes at my local Wal-Mart have the boxart with the IGN logo clearly visible from a few of feet away.
The picture posted in this thread is low-rez and its a bit of hard to see. But it was definitely there when I saw the box yesterday.

On the second thought, could the games with the IGN logo be a pirated copy? That is, if there are game boxes without the IGN logo.
