Would the PS3 being profitable be a positive thing for you?

Do you work for Sony or have shares in them?

On the other hand if you mean that by making money they can then put into developing new features e.t.c. then you have a valid point.

@Esat

That's exactly what I meant. My statement was a little ambiguous. Profits could potentially lead to lower prices like was stated in the story, but it also could mean that if Sony starts to see profits they might start to take risks like they did with Home, and with that in mind, who knows what we might see.

All the consoles I think fill certain niches and do them well. The 360 is a very good gaming console, built for gaming, surely better than the PS3 I will admit.

Sony needs to focus more on games with the PS3 and less on things as Blu-Ray, Remote Play, Home, etc.

But the PS3 can do a lot of things pretty well, its a good swiss-army knife. If I had the choice of only one piece of equipment for my home theater, I'd choose a PS3.

But most here are only interested in gaming, which is a bit watered down on the PS3 as it focuses on other aspects most of us aren't interested in.

Things YOUR not interested in ... I love the PS3's games ... exclusive and multiplatform alike ... I don't understand the bitching about games to be honest ... It has free online play (stable as well) and a ton of fun games ... I mean it has been out an entire year less than the 360 ... The same argument applies to the Wii but you single out the PS3 ... so typical ... If all you want is shooters its not the console for you ... if you have broader horizons than shooters then you will love it & the Wii ... MGS 4 is going to be the first big time recognizable exclusive for the PS3 ... They have a lot in store and a lot thats already been released ... Try the games before you knock them ... Please enlighten me as to what 360 games are so much greater than what the PS3 has ...

I can think of a few great ones but its not like as many as people like yourself make it out to be

I am actually a PS3 fanboy if you hadn't noticed, I'm to buy that console next month, but a 360 is mighty tempting and its right behind the PS3 as my other choice, very close second.

Sounds like I'm gonna wait for that 45nm to come out before I purchase one, hopefully Tekken 6 will be out by then.

Well thats your choice and the price could drop another $50.00 - $100.00 but its not like the 360 where stability and heat is an issue ... you can run the PS3 everyday (folding@home) and not have to worry about console failure ... I am tempted to sell my 60 GB PS3 and purchase the 80 GB MGS 4 bundle pack ...

It's like this. A woman on a date does not want to see an Xbox 360 in the guys house. It is probably next to the keg-erator, and the Monster Energy drinks. The PS3 is about sophistication and class.

It seems the 360 zealots have turned this thread into another pissing contest ... seems like Fernando has once again slander Sony for no reason ... things never change on this site ... Anyway ...

I am glad that the PS3 is near profitability because when it was first released Sony was losing money on each console sold ... At this rate they should break even on the hardware in probably less than 12 months ... Not to mention all fo the sales of games and blu-ray movies ... I am glad Sony gives me a complete console out of the box and I don't have to go buy extra periphials just to make it usable ... Good for Sony ... I hope they eventually release a USB add on that allows me to play UMD games on my PS3 ... I know it defeats the purpose of owning a PSP but sometimes I would prefer to play my portable games at home on the big screen ... Like Nintendo had last generation with the Game Boy add on ... That was a great idea they had ... I predict a lot of consoles moving here soon with GTA IV & MGS 4 releasing soon ... Both should help move consoles ... I thought GT:Prologue would move some consoles world wide and it may have but we won't know that until the next round of data is released ...

People ranting about the 360 being profitable ... You guys must be forgetting the 1 billion dollar write off in 1 Quarter ... If you honestly believe the 360 has turned a profit then you are either uninformed or you believe everything Microsoft tells you ... I would imagine the Wii does not cost very much to make so Nintendo needs to invest some of that cash into another facility or better streamline their production ... There is no good reason to still have shortages ... Pretty amazing that little thing still moves the numbers it does ... But, when you really think about population booming and the Wii's family & kid centric titles and controls its no surprise it has outsold the 360 by such a wide margin even with a 1 year disadvantage ... 360 is still beating the PS3 but is been getting murdered by the Wii ... But, if you count the number of 360's Microsoft has sold to themselves for repair purposes I am sure they are near 50 million sold by now

@Fernando

Do you really want Nintendo taking stuff out of the box? The Wii is tiny as it is ... Nintendo needs to focus on it's supply chain before they consider a price drop or a new SKU ... They cant keep the Wii on the shelf at $250.00 so what sense does it make to drop the price even more ... This is a Sony thread so quit trolling

You have to admit that joystiq is just as much a part of engadget if it's scource is mainly focused on... mainly if it's not constantly referenced on other sites.
But yeah I meant joystiq... pff... Fernando Fucker!

Don't worry about Curtis he is always siding with Fernando and defending him ... The bottom line is you meant Joystiq and we all knew it ... But, to be technical Joystiq is under the Engadget umbrella like PS3 fanboy is under the Joystiq umbrella ... And your right about Fernando as well ...

@Tranando

As a whole, the Entertainment and Devices Division posted a loss. The Xbox 360 console section DID post a profit. Manufacturing the console has been profitable for a LONG time for Microsoft. You can try to ignore it, but that does NOT change the reality of it.

Now, with the new, smaller chip, is Sony going to bring back backwards compatibility? While we still sell a fair number of them, we also average 10 returns per week because of people that have PS2 libraries that they can't play. I've been in retail for too many years to not see and hear what customers are saying. Sure, we see a lot (15 or so per week) of 360's coming back in from people that bought the replacement plan, but they just want a new console. The people that are bringing the PS3's back either want their money back or they end up getting a 360 and a PS2. (It's not like we have any Wii's in stock, either.)

Oh, and think about this. If Sony had a $1.5 billion loss, they'd be up the proverbial brown creek. Microsoft has such deep pockets that it doesn't matter to them - AND they're planning for the long term as well, where they CAN take a loss one quarter.

Good luck on that RSX, Sony.

One of the key reasons that Microsoft was unable to reduce costs on the original Xbox was that Nvidia had absolutely no interest in die shrinking an old chip that they were the sole vendor on, and could use their sole source leverage to continuously rape MS on price right up until the final unit.

Enjoy the ass fucking.

If sony was to drop a ps3 slim and it cost more than $249.99, I would laugh in the persons FACE who ask for one. The Wii is a better secondary system imo because most games for the ps3 (besides exclusives) come out for the 360 also. -Then again, my Wii gets no play unless my son is playing it...

But I would like a Wii with a 20-40 gb external hd and arcade controller with rumble for $249.99. -oh, and I'm done with waggle... more games that use the arcade controller please..

As for the ps3, it's a hard sell against the 360.. the 360 is deeply rooted in my household with 2 systems (gunning for an elite for GTA4 and download space) and over 10 games easy... It would have to be dirt cheap for me to plop down my money for one.. and I dont watch movies like that, so that means exclusives.. And so far, im not interested in ps3 exclusives. Sorry, but it's a hard sell for me..

I may get a psp for the train rides... maaaaaybe.. But my DS covers that too..

What you say is very true...

A ps3 would be raped hard by the combo of an even MORE discounted Wii (Wii Lite as Fernando the King of Wii himself has dubbed it) and the 360 discounted to under $250...

Face it sony fanboys...your overpriced, big ass, fugly console is doomed to remain in 3rd place and barely has any games worth mentioning.

I think we're all forgetting something here. I live in Sweden, look at this comparison of prices in the US, UK and Sweden.

US PS3: 399 USD
UK PS3: 579 USD (299GBP)
SE PS3: 708 USD (4189SEK)

SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHT AMERICAN DOLLARS. Sony has such a big loss on every sold system in the US they have to raise our prices (EU) sky high.

Also interesting to note is that the XBOX360 is a rare sight in european homes, despite being cheaper.

Would you buy a Volvo if 30% if their new cars had overheating problems? or would you think of them as a crappy car maker?
