On the eve of its debut, the Metal Gear Online US public beta has gone AWOL. More accurately, Konami has announced that the beta has been delayed due to "extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe" causing service problems.
Konami did not give a new starting date for the beta, only to say that more information will be coming tomorrow, April 22. The end date, however, has been pushed back from May 5 to May 11. (Update: fixed date.) For those who need a fix desperately can peep the online manual for the game, including a listing of the 16 skills you can choose from to enhance your stealth killer.
Update: Konami has set a tentative start date and time: 04/25/2008 24:00 (PDT) -- more here!
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

here is what i dont understand they printed all those beta codes. dont you think they would print what they new they could handel. when you send out rsvp to a party you send them to people you would expect to come. you expect them all to come to the party so if they all rsvp you cant say oh snap i dont have room for all those people. konami rsvp was all the beta downloads.

Wow. As long as its happened on the 360 too then everything is alright. Imagine if it had only happened on the PS3.. that might make the PS3 look slightly bad in comparison to the 360 in some crazy people's mind and they might have to jump on message boards to attack the 360 in order to limit the problem.

Agreed. They should've known after everyone rushed the KONAMI ID site(which I still dislike); that demand was going to be high. I'm still amazed I even got through just to get a log-in ID. It was a very tedious, annoying process because it kept either saying the page was deleted or the email address was already pre-registered.

Haha, my friend's been talking about this game for weeks, including yesterday when all he did was IM me a hundred screenshot links and about a dozen articles on how MGS would be better than sex.
Talk about getting owned son.

Depends who you're having it with.
If its Angelina Jolie, then of course its not, but if its with someone terrifying, maybe he had a point :)

At least we get more time, can't complain about that. And it's a fucking beta for Christ's sake. I can't believe people are complaining because it's having problems. I'd rather them have all the problems in the world with stuff like this and have a fully working game in June.

Its funny how everyone is hyped about the beta for an online game and no one talks about the single player at all

Wait, wait, wait... Metal Gear ONLINE has a single player?!? That's right, it doesn't....

Nope, Metal Gear Online is completely seperate. MGS4 comes with MGO STARTER pack. Konami has confirmed MGSO is a seperate entity.

No...wait!
According to Wikipedia: "Metal Gear Online, this incarnation of the online game was initially announced as a separate stand-alone product based on the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots gameplay and setting, but has since been announced as part of Metal Gear Solid 4."

As stated above, this is a beta meaning it is a test run so to speak. You are absolutely correct; let this have all the problems in the world. I hope the beta goes crazy so they can anticipate the heavy usage when the actual full release comes out.

Well, this does suck. I was looking forward to playing it. I would say extending it is nice, but that just gives them six more days to push it back. So far Konami has done a bang up job on this.

Oh, and I meant to add earlier that despite the game being 'just' a beta; it's still ridiculous that they couldn't prepare for this a little better. Delays are fine(especially if needed to amend the game and not for marketing reasons), but the process for simply signing up was nigh-insane.

If Konami had a long line of online titles like EA, Dice, Epic, Bungie, Valve, or iD, this would be unforgivable. But wait.... we forgave all those companies when THEIR betas didn't go smoothly and in some cases, even the final product had severe issues...

Dude, you have to see for yourself how lame you look right:
You skipped school for a beta of a game that will be around for a long time to come.
You created an account at this site to post one bitch over said beta.
You named that account about being mad about the beta being delayed a whole day. A day.
Seriously, go to school.

Well....once again....you get what you pay for with the PS Online model....
As i really have no outstanding expectations for MGS Online due to the underwhelming Online mode for SUBSISTENCE.....
You have to wonder if they'll pull the plug faster on the servers this time around....

I really could care less about MGS Online....as long as they get MGS4 right. Some games really aren't meant to be multiplayer online.
If I want stealth action multiplayer online.....one series already got that correct...SPLINTER CELL. Is MGS Online somehow going to top that?? No friggin' way.
Anyone else get the feeling that this just seems like a tacked on afterthought for Konami to recoup their humongous investment in the MGS series....especially if they limit it to a single console?
