Rumor: Guitar Hero IV adding vocals, drums, regular DLC

This corresponds with information Joystiq has received from a source close to the company, who tells us that multiple instruments – including a microphone and drumkit – will be a part of the next Guitar Hero game, likely to be called Guitar Hero IV despite its focus on multiple instruments (other potential names: Band Hero and Rockstar Hero). Also, our source reports that Activision insiders are proud enough of their drum peripheral to say that it will be "superior" to Rock Band's (we know, shocking).
Perhaps just as importantly, Activision's weakness in downloadable content could be resolved as early as the release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith this June, when content is expected to be released regularly, perhaps "even weekly." Also contributing to the company's positive outlook on DLC is the pending merger with Vivendi, potentially giving it unparalleled access to that company's Universal Music Group, the largest family of record labels in the music industry.
We've asked Activision to comment on this story. If anyone close to the story has any additional information to share, you know where to find us.

Superior as in having two bass pedals?
Tiptup300 @ Apr 21st 2008 8:27PM
I'm surprised nobody has made a double pedal yet for Rock Band, shouldn't be too hard...
colin17 @ Apr 21st 2008 8:51PM
get two pedals and a headphone splitter, solved....
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 21st 2008 5:50PM
Rock Band > Guitar Hero
Kizzle @ Apr 21st 2008 6:15PM
Yep. Sorry Activision, but too little, too late. Your cash cow jumped the shark with the last installment. By the time GH4 shows up, Rock Band's DLC will be a mighty freight train that not even Activision/Rec Octane can stop...plus we will start hearing stuff about Rock Band 2 by the time GH4 is out, which will steal the thunder anyway.
colin17 @ Apr 21st 2008 8:51PM
after Guitar Hero 3 became so hard that me and my friends were playing "how far can you get on this song on expert." Like Through The Fire and Flames doesn't make sense because I'm pretty sure the opening is a keyboard. Screw Guitar Hero 4, you guys lost a fan*. Go Rock Band.
*= Let's see the songs.....
rockintom @ Apr 22nd 2008 12:53PM
Um... Not to sound lame or anything, but GH3 sold about 7x more...
Also, the intro to fire and flames *is* guitar.

Why not take a different route, and ad a DDR pad instead?
Ken Seang @ Apr 21st 2008 5:54PM
Why not have DDR pads, web cam, drum, mic, and the guitar. That way you get backup dancer and you can post a vid of you and your friend looking like idiots all over the internetz...
Jhongerkong @ Apr 22nd 2008 12:24AM
Why not take it a step further and add a IIDX controller

Anything you can do, I can do worse!
No you can't!
Yes I can!
Lone Starr @ Apr 21st 2008 5:53PM
This could be really interesting. It would have the gameplay (presumably) of Rock Band with the established name of Guitar Hero (again, presumably).
And like Apollo said, please give us a double pedal. It would be cool if it had the mechanics of a real drum pedal too.
loungemonkey @ Apr 21st 2008 5:55PM
Established name for Guitar Hero kinda got beat down this year.
Rockband is the place to be fool!
JerJer @ Apr 21st 2008 5:55PM
Did you play GH3? It was established...up until that bastardization of a game.
I hope to God this addition of new instruments doesn't kill Rock Band. The songs are SOOO much better than GH...3.....but it doesnt have the mainstream popularity...... yet :(
Lone Starr @ Apr 21st 2008 6:07PM
Guitar Hero did get thwomped but I would wager, based on sales alone, Guitar Hero is still king to most people. I'm pretty sure GH3 outsold Rock Band, (according to that Counting Rupees), but don't quote me on that.
Regardless, I personally like RB more and don't think this will kill off that franchise.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 21st 2008 6:10PM
Considering Rock Band is $110 more than GH 3 and I think $70 more than the GH 3 + guitar bundle, I would expect them to outsell rock band.
ScallionN @ Apr 21st 2008 6:36PM
Double pedals would be a good way to use overdrive/star power, instead of waiting for a damn drum fill. or it could control a hi-hat.
Either way, Activision butchered Guitar Hero. What makes them think they can do any better by copying Rock Band?
Besides the mint they made off of GH3, I mean.
jsn @ Apr 21st 2008 6:56PM
Rock Band has outsold GH3 on the consoles that count over the last few months so I think the brand hype has ran its course.

Please keep the sane look for notes. Rock Band's are terrible. Otherwise, this is great news. To all those who think differently, competition encourages developers to try harder, and we reap the rewards!

Rock Bands look pro exact and sleek. Guitar Hero's look like candies. Ugly candies.

tittup i totally agree. rock band is classy.
guitar hero 3 still wears jean shorts.

"There's a reason why most local bands are local - they are not good enough to NOT be local" ~loadingreadyrun.com
Blah, as much as I still like Guitar Hero, Rock Band is better in so many ways. In the end, GHIV (Now with Drums!) will be just some crappy knock off and Rock Band 2 would be a better choice, IMO.
But I dunno, let's see if Activision can wow me. I predict that GH will become the Tony Hawk franchise - drivel. But my last name doesn't have an -tcher at the end, so I guess I'm not fit to make these analysis.
Cesaria (SSBB: 3136-6466-5083) @ Apr 21st 2008 6:04PM
We have several wonderful local bands here in beautiful Fort Wayne, IN. If you like instrumental check out All Nite Skate, or weird eclectro The Freezing Scene on their myspace pages. Ok, I've done my local good deed.
MarkHawk @ Apr 21st 2008 6:33PM
I disagree with local bands sucking. I love local shows. Yeah a majority suck but if I am seeing a local band for a 3rd or 4th time is because I like them. There are tons of reasons why they don't go mainstream. I'll leave it at that.
PojoMofo @ Apr 21st 2008 5:59PM
Man, this is so sweet!! It will be like you have your very own ROCK BAND!!!, why didnt anyone think of this before................oh, nervermind
Vcize @ Apr 21st 2008 10:29PM
Yeah, ripping another game off is bad, that's why Rock Band is nothing like Guitar Hero.
Seriously though, they could have done more than just changing the words. It's Overdrive, not Star Power....totally different.
renode @ May 9th 2008 4:14PM
@ Vcize -
but it was Harmonix's game to begin with. how can you possibly rip off something that's yours?
Ranus Studios @ Apr 21st 2008 6:03PM
But won't it stop being Guitar Hero, then?
I like Guitar Hero because the guitar is actually challenging.
loungemonkey @ Apr 21st 2008 6:13PM
Yeah by adding notes in that do not even make sense. It just makes it hard for hards sake.
Ranus Studios @ Apr 21st 2008 6:27PM

Ha, recently someone was saying how great Guitar Hero was because it was so hard. Of course it was promptly before they failed at Green Grass & High Tides on hard.
jake18oly @ Apr 21st 2008 6:07PM
Meh. I'll pass. I don't have much confidence in the Guitar Hero series anymore. Harmonix was what made the series what it was. Now that they are no longer behind Guitar Hero I am not really interested. I will just stick to Rock Band thank you very much.
mmendoza27 @ Apr 21st 2008 7:49PM
I agree. I've played both games, I was completely hooked on Guitar Hero III before Rock Band came out. Then I realized that Harmonix has this shit down to a science. They just make good rhythm games. GHIII is so ridiculous sometimes when it comes to difficulty. ROCK BAND 2 FTW!!!

sorry, my living room has already reached maximum capacity for fake plastic instruments.
Sky Shark X2 @ Apr 21st 2008 6:18PM
Rock Band will still be better, I mean come on Activision is putting out 3 GH games this year, all they care about is money, not improving. I have a feeling their drum set will be smaller and more childish in apperance....just like their giutar. Oh yeah and they'll Easy will be the same as Medium in GH3, Medium will be like Hard on GH3, Hard will be like GH3's Expert and Expert will impossible. I mean after all we all know how they screwed with diffculty settings on GH3.
This is just a "We can do it too!" game, Rockband makes the game with the whole band and fun element in mind, GH only cares primarly about "hard rock and challange" along with cash ins. Therefore Rockband will be better than GH4.
Louis sansano @ Apr 21st 2008 6:25PM
The two things Guitar Hero has is the better feel of the guitar controller and the look of the notes on screen. The access to the Universal catalog is huge though so keep an eye on that.
Jody @ Apr 21st 2008 6:45PM
Guitar Hero IV features vocals drums and regular dlc.
Funny...thought it was called GUITAR hero for a reason....silly me.
Roddie @ Apr 21st 2008 6:49PM
Anyone got a link to article where Activision said Guitar Hero III was better than Rock Band because it was less confusing/complicated (or some BS along those lines)?
MasterInsan0 @ Apr 21st 2008 6:51PM
I really didn't expect them to blatantly rip off the Rock Band formula, but I guess I should have expected less from Activision.
I don't know how to put into words this feeling I have, so I'll describe it as best I can: amusement mixed with despair mixed with humiliation. Amusement because it's funny that they're so obviously and unapologetically ripping off Rock Band; despair because even if the game sucks balls, people will still buy it since it says "Guitar Hero" on it; and humiliation because Guitar Hero once stood for fun and unique--now it stands for rip-off, corporate, and shame.
Cesaria (SSBB: 3136-6466-5083) @ Apr 21st 2008 6:55PM
Would that make every shooter ever created a rip-off of the first, whatever that may be? Or every movie since the first? I could go on forever...
