On top of the previously announced three new online modes to be introduced in Burnout Paradise's so-called "Cagney" software update, developer Criterion has revealed that the forthcoming download will also level the pavement between the open-world racer's two console versions, finally bringing custom soundtracks to Burnout Paradise for the PS3.
After the update, PS3 owners will be able to get at their own music using the game's Easy Drive in-game menu, allowing them to cycle through their own collection of tunes while trying to avoid careening into oncoming traffic. Even better, this update, welcome as it is, is just one of several Criterion has planned this year, ensuring many repeat visits to the junk yard in the months ahead.

That's cool. The only reason that Burnout Paradise WASN'T my first PS3 game was the blasted custom-soundtrack feature. Now I wish I got that version instead. I believe it was the PS3 that had the slightly superior version?

Not sure if you were being sarcastic, but I'll answer anyway. The PS3 does not (at the moment) have a quick XMb to use in-game. Custom soundtracks are not in every PS3 game.

This would be the only way for the PS3 to get custom soundtracks since Microsoft patented custom soundtracks in a XMB.

Tyler,
No, the PS3 doesn't have an standard custom soundtrack feature, instead, reportedly, Sony has given the choice to the devs to add the custom soundtrack feature, hence why some games have it

Go back a few more years. 2005 standardised it across all games (for 360). 2001 implemented it like this. ;p

There are no better textures on the PS3 version of Burnout. Instead the difference you see has to do with AA. The 360 has AA which makes the texture slightly blurry but smoother while the PS3 does not have AA which makes the textures slightly sharper but the scene is also more jaggy. In either case you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two which make Burnout one of the best cross platform games on the market

Custom Soundtracks and the Guide Button on XBox 360 are NOT the same thing. Custom soundtracks means the game countrols your music ( .MP3's off your hard drive ) just the same as it would control the in-game music. Custom Soundtracks is what the original XBox used in many of the XBox titles. Xbox 360's Guide Button ( music selection, chat, etc. ) is part of the operating system. The game won't control the music being played on the Guide Button. The in-game X-Media Bar functionality the is coming to PS3 this year is expected to include access to your music on your hard drive ( similar to the Guide Button ). Custom Soundtracks have to be coded by the developers to be included in the game. XMB is part of the operating system.

i agree with everything you say, but I also want to say that when you have the music streaming from your HDD the game knows to turn it down during cutscenes so you can hear them.

The PS3 custom soundtrack is better than the XBox equivalent for that reason.
On PS3 you can change tracks with the trigger (just like the regular soundtrack), whereas on the Xbox you have to bring up the dashboard (pausing the game) to jump to the next track.
I don't know why the Xbox version doesn't control the custom tracks in game. I have to imagine that it has the technology to turn the volume down on any audio even if it's being streamed from the dashboard. And I'm guessing the Microsoft provides a simple API for games to control the tracks (play, pause, next track, etc); but maybe not.

If you have the 360 remote you can advance your playlist without pausing the game. The reason you can't do that with the controller (in most games) is because you have to use those buttons for something else, like gameplay.
The custom soundtracks are probably one of my favorite features of the 360.
The best game soundtrack I've ever heard? Mine.

This is what happens when you have developers that actually care about the PS3 and do not treat it as an afterthought in terms of cross-platform games.
Thanks Criterion for actually caring about us hated PS3 owners and fanboys instead of unloading a mediocre port on us like so many other developers. : )

I don't think you understand what's being added here - Not really the same as what you're talking about. This integrates your music into the game the same way the game's existing music is by the developer - meaning you can skip tracks with the triggers, and the music ducks when sound effects and crashes happen...

Everytime I see one of these "PS3 gets custom sound tracks, PS3 gets friends lists, PS3 gets private chat, PS3 gets movie downloads, PS3 gets In game XMB" and then see fanboys getting all wet in excitement I just want to say why haven't you got an xbox 360 the past three years?!
I understand if you own both and want to have the same experience on your PS3, but if you have been a PS3 owner only and rag on the 360 constantly while wishing for 360 features it just makes you look like an ass.

Who the heck cares, I got my PS3 version and I absolutely love it. That's the machine I own. That's the machine I buy for. I could care less if there is a slight difference in textures or all the rest of the hogwash. I will NEVER purchase a machine from Microsoft that has a reputation of breaking down. My best friend was on his 4th replacement in a 5 month period, and sold his and got a PS3, and it has worked flawlessly for 8 months now. Plus, he has quite a nice blu-ray collection for his high-def tv, no add-ons for that, hehe.
