EA's NFL Head Coach '09 gets full-price, standalone release Sept. 2
Remember last month when EA mentioned that coaching simulator NFL Head Coach '09 would only be available as part of the Madden '09 Collector's Edition? Yeah, funny story about that -- it's not true. EA revealed in a press release today that the game will actually also be sold as a $49.99 standalone release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in time for the start of the new football season on Sept. 2.
We're a little skeptical that U.S. gamers will be willing to shell out nearly $50 bucks for a coaching simulator -- remember, the 2006 original NFL Head Coach was budget priced at $20, and still got savaged in reviews. Then again, Europeans seem to go nuts for the similar Football Simulator series of soccer-management sims, so maybe North America is just behind the curve on this one. Then again again, maybe we Americans are just too discriminating to enjoy a game where you simply manage a sport rather than actively participating in it. We report, you work out your patriotic vitriol in the comments thread.

Well, although released on my birthday, I can see too many people thinking that $50 is justified when you can play fantasy football for free
PojoMofo @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:37PM
I mean I CANT see too many people buying this...
Jcarpio @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:51PM
Free fantasy football? what's the point of playing then, bragging rights? no thanks.
vidGuy @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:38PM
Head Coach is fantastic but not worth that much. I'd pay MAYBE $25.

Pretty niche product.
I guess people still buy Romance of the Three Kingdoms sims... right?

You can't say some deft rice production management skills wouldn't come in handy right now.

More like 2 Jacksons and a Hamilton!

Hate to break it to you, Kyle, but the original NFL Head Coach released at an MSRP of $39.99, not $19.99.

"Then again, maybe we Americans are just too discriminating to enjoy a game where you simply manage a sport rather than actively participating in it."
Or we could spin it the other way and admit that we're too lazy to think and would rather just run.
PojoMofo @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:42PM

GOOD.
I actually like doing coaching and GM stuff in football games, and I wasn't about to pay $90 for it (while using Madden as a coaster while I play NFL2k5)

The (I hate to say it) Gamestop Blog has some 'exclusive' scoop on Madden 09's enhanced weather system here: http://www.ebgames.com/gs/blog/
Finally they realize that next-gen systems are capable of more than just dotted white lines for snow and a 50% opacity gray mask for rain.
