Gears of War 2 panel: 'hot chicks,' stereotypes, living cover and more
While megatons were nary to be found at Epic Games' Gears of War 2 panel at this year's New York Comic Con, Epic president Michael Capps and writer Joshua Ortega nonetheless revealed a few tidbits that are sure to pique the interest of the Gears faithful.
Immediately after production on the first Gears wrapped up, the team had to ask itself what it could to make the game "bigger" and "more badass." For example, they saw how people responded to the last-minute addition of the chainsaw. What could they do to improve the chainsaw? Chainsaw duels, perhaps?
Cover, which is admittedly inspired by the oft-forgotten Kill.switch, will also be expanded upon in the sequel. Players have already taken cover behind inanimate objects: rocks, walls, etc. But, what if players could take cover behind moving, living things? What if players could kill a massive enemy and then use it as cover? This ultimately led to the development of massive worm creatures for the sequel.

Epic discovered that gamers enjoyed playing as Dom, and wanted to flesh out his character a bit more in the sequel. "It's humanity's last stand," Ortega notes. But he still wanted to create a more "human" story for Gears 2. Dom's long-lost love interest, Maria, will play an important role in the new story. A more practical matter was brought up by Capps: "Our game is sadly void of hot chicks." Maria would fill that void.
The heroes aren't the only ones that will feel more "human" in the sequel. The Locust finally gained a (British) voice at the end of the original Gears. Expect them to be slightly more "sympathetic" in the sequel, as we see more of their story. However, Capps notes that the game can't make the enemies too human: "In video game storytelling, you really have to build archetypal characters because in Gears of War, Marcus had a hundred lines of dialog -- it's hard to go deeper into his motivations. Spending that time with bad guys is even harder."
"Graphics is pretty much universally hailed as the easiest way to get someone to take a look." |
Capps talked about the hierarchy of game development. While Wii fans may argue the point, he puts graphics at the top of that list. "Graphics is pretty much universally hailed as the easiest way to get someone to take a look ... if it looks really cool, it gets them in way, way faster than good controls do because they're not playing it yet." Of course, good looks are simply meant to lure people in. After that, it's all about controls, gameplay systems, and balance. When designing a game, all these game mechanics must come before the story. Capps thinks that any other method may create a game that simply isn't fun.
DLC should be free
Even though the game hasn't even released yet, one gamer in the audience asked about the potential for DLC in the future. "Epic has been doing downloadable content since 1996," Capps reminded the audience. His policy on DLC seems to echo the sentiments of Valve's Gabe Newell: "You can make money in post-sales, but you can also convince your fans that 'I bet if I buy Gears 2, I'll get a lot of free sh*t afterwards.'" The recent trend of charging for map packs is something that Capps doesn't seem to approve of.

Is Cole a stereotype?
Fans in the audience expressed their appreciation of Cole Train. However, Capps wanted to speak on the recent controversy over accusations that the character is merely a stereotype. Morgan Gray, Senior Producer at Crystal Dynamics, said "Cole Train is basically like every other effin' black character in a video game. Like here comes the urban stereotype ... They go really far to do a lot of fictional justifications for this culture that they've built, and they go right back to this urban stereotype for the black character."
Capps insinuated that the criticisms may not be valid from a team that created the Lara Croft character. "That character is so Rasta," Capps added. The voice actor ad-libbed most of his lines, Capps noted as his defense.
What about the movie?
Hollywood has been working on a film adaptation of Gears of War. However, not much is known about the project. Seems like legal issues continue to slow the development of this project. "Working with the movie industry is pretty complicated ... it's mostly legal stuff." Capps is obviously excited for the project. With a movie, there's no technical limitations to worry about: "I don't have to worry about framerate ... there's a lot of scenes I'd love to see in a movie."

"Maybe I'll just find a way to give away the PC version for free." |
The Games for Windows version of Gears of War included an extra level, which helped fill a plot gap between the mansion and the train yard. PC players were able to experience an epic fight against a Brumak which the 360 version will never get (due to differences between the PC and 360 versions of the Unreal Engine). Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this "deleted scene" will ever get its play on consoles. "I'm really proud of that content and I'd love to get it in more people's hands but I can't ... maybe I'll just find a way to give away the PC version for free."

Rogue Trooper also used a nice cover system. It's a shame that it never got the love it deserved.

Killswitch, lol I had that game on Xbox. It was from Namco and it was a good game. Very difficult though.
I can never get enough of Gears 2 news =) I also loved playing as Dom. His quote after getting a headshot in online MP is one of my favs, "Wussup Bitches!"...pure gold! There definatly is alot of detail in Gears. The first time I saw Doms Maria tatt I was like "NO WAY" very sweet.
I think this game might challenge MGS4 for game of the year.
ViagraFiend @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:59AM
A Mr. Thefting of the Gran Auto may have something to say about that.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:15AM
Uhh, oops...yeah...forgot about that.
:P

Like GoW2 will be any better? If there's one thing I've always observed, it's that women in Unreal engines always look like transsexuals (as will undoubtedly Maria). At first, I thought this was unintentional. Now, I'm not so sure.
JerkfacedFed @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:50PM
LOL sugar daddy, I love it. Gears freaking owns MGS4, that game seriously took a huge turn to the gay side. There's a move that lets you search the enemy and pat down their ass and balls, an offensive move where you grab their crotch to make them pass out (why not a choke hold instead?!). Graphically, MGS4 is way behind as well. The game has been delayed so much that it does not look at all impressive anymore in comparison to games like Mass Effect and Bioshock.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:06PM
LOL, you know what? Now I do remember that teh ghey part on the demo where he is feeling the PMC up. lulz Still buying though :D
The rooms spinnin, rooms spinnin' cuz a gayness.

Why don't they just come out and admit they've retained Rob Liefeld for the sequel?
CarpeD1em500 @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:30AM
That'd be tight if they somehow said "okay, you bought GoW2, here is a free code for the SINGLE Brumak "episode" (if you will) of the PC version." It would be the ultimate demo...and for those of us who already played the 360 version to death, it would be a nice little bonus b/c we'd have a chance to finally play that scene.
Maybe thats what he means?? Hell if he really wants to give us the whole game though, I'm down for that also!!
ThePremierAssassin @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:30AM
I don't want to be a whiny 360 fanboy...I appreciate Epic's efforts in the graphics department and I love Gears of War...
But I really find it astounding and annoying that they won't give us the extra scenes/parts that the PC version of Gears had.
Yeah they've said that those were built on a newer version of their engine. HOWEVER don't they STILL have the OLD version lying around those parts? Surely they could have done the exact same stuff and just added it on as DLC....
But w/e Gears 2 is on the way so I guess by the time they do that (if they ever do that) it'll be too late.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:43AM
LOL, its never too late! I still wanna play those extra chapters, the boss battle and the 3 extra MP maps they got =(
SAGExSDX @ Apr 22nd 2008 11:39AM
it sounds like you haven't done software development before.
just because they have the code for the 360 version doesn't mean it's easy to get it up to date with the PC version.
all of the game code has to tap into the unreal engine from that version. depending on the changes - and it sounds like there were a reasonable amount - having that same code tap into a newer engine with new functions and removed (possibly) functions is not only a nightmare to integrate, but also a nightmare to have to re-QA.
all of that is not worth the time and cost when they have a second game coming down the line.
caramelzappa @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:47AM
They really needed a reason to sell the PC version of the game. No matter what someones not happy, if they did release of for the 360 the people who got the PC version would be pissed because they bought it for exclusive content that is no longer exclusive.
If it's any help, the extra chapter wasn't great.
Nigeria - MK: 0430-8491-9123 @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:44AM
I haven't watched the video, but judging from the Joystiq round up, it's nice to see Capps brush off the stereotype question with such flippancy.
It's good to see great character development. Especially, characterisation which relies on outdated caricature. It really shows maturity and original thinking.
PojoMofo @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:50AM
living cover???? Are they going to kill Justin McElroy and where his skin as a suit?
Eleniel @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:54AM
For all their talk about "going forward", Epic is sure making huge backward leaps as far as inclusive game design is concerned. "Needs more hot chicks"? Really? And how is Cole Train NOT a stereotype?
Clearly Epic is working hard to keep gaming the white boy's club it is. What a bunch of assholes.
Vcize @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:38AM
OMG AND THE HISPANIC GUY HAD A BIT OF A SPANISH ACCENT TOO!
OBVIOUSLY EPIC ARE RACISTS! AND SO IS ANYONE THAT PLAYS THE GAME BY ASSOCIATION!
Joeshie @ Apr 22nd 2008 12:54PM
OH NOES. THEY ARE INCLUDING A GAME WITH HOT CHICKS!
THOSE SEXIST PIGS. HOW DARE THEY!
Jerk Face @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:23PM
I JUST ATE SOME PIZZA ROLLS. THEY WERE REALLY DELICIOUS. SOON I WILL PLAY ME SOME 360. IT WILL PROBABLY BE PRETTY OKAY, AT THE VERY LEAST.
Deadpool @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:27PM
If anything, Gears 2 needs women who wouldn't look like they'd be afraid to break a nail or send you into a crossfire to save their purse or lapdog. "Hot chicks" is the last thing the franchise needs.
john william @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:25PM
I sometimes wonder what it's like to be politically correct twit devoid of any joy. Thanks for the sneak preview!
Eleniel @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:04PM
I'm not calling them racist or sexist. I'm not trying to be politically correct. What I'm saying is that Capps's remarks are immature and embarrassing.
Marlos Hill @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:23AM
i kinda thought his justification of Cole Train not being a stereotype was laughable at best. I mean no real comment other than "Well He's Not" ... blah...
I liked the character, but still i think the first time he appeared i thought "he's gonna sound like X" and sure enough he did.
*yawn*
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:29AM
Seriously, WHO CARES if he's a ST? Hes one cool and funny character and I wouldnt want it any other way in the sequal.
SugarDaddy @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:34AM
Living cover? Wouldn't it be dead cover since you just killed the thing that you're taking cover on?
Bucket @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:37AM
I've been playing games with a cover system for years now.
IT'S CALLED A CROUCH BUTTON.
It works, too. You can move freely while crouching, look around for more cover, and anything at all can be hidden behind!
New revolutionary mechanics from GoW2: jumping system.
mike @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:48AM
Your comparing the duck button in games to that of a cover system? Have you ever played GOW? Does a duck button let you see around corners, shoot from behind cover, give you a tactical assesment of an incoming enemy and position yourself so your garunteed to win the battle?
You must be a bucket full of shit.
Bucket @ Apr 22nd 2008 12:26PM
I can do all that myself. Talk about full of shit, you need a button to do all that for you.
Ranus Studios @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:51AM
I was there and didn't feel it was worth getting up early for.
But then, I also had a headache.

i love me some kill.switch one of many ps2 games i still play.

Epic keeps talking about free DLC, but there was still a $10 map pack for Gears 1.
MGSROCKS1 @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:10PM
Its free because it is free. You can pay to get the DLC right away or wait 2 months and get it for free. Every developer should follow this model.PSN: MGSROCKS1 GamerTag: QUIXAND

While ridiculously stereotypical, I thought Cole Train was a light and welcome comedy relief character. He seemed like what an ex-famous athlete in a ruined world would be like. I think crying racist is a little extreme.
I definitely think that black characters in video games too often get strapped in with that stereotypical kind of personality; but I don't think that there is anything wrong with that archetype per se. Just the lack of black characters who AREN'T that archetype.
t_m @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:04PM
Well, the justification was essentially that it was mostly the character of the voice actor coming through. Which seems mostly fair enough.
Of course, they did decide to cast a voice actor who really fit the stereotype they wanted to portray... they could also have chosen a different voice actor who could have ad-libbed a different personality.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005355/
That character archtype is fine.... but it would indeed be nice to have some OTHER kinds of black characters occasionally in games.
Thats why i liked the Lance Vance character in vice-city. Having a blatantly gay black character made a nice change...
Procris @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:02PM
The brumak level would have been sweet if they could have only released it on 360. I understand why they never put it on 360 but its a mixed bag of reasons. Regardless of what this guy says, they wanted to give people a reason to buy Gears of War for PC and what better way than give them a literally epic fight thats not on the console version thats already sold 4 million? Then theres the fact that the UE3 for Gears on PC is slightly more updated than the console version. Now it was a very long time ago but i remember reading a comment from Cliff saying that it wasn't impossible for them to put the brumak level on the 360, just that they'd have to recreate it using the old code, rather than the updated code on the PC version. Which obviously isn't worth the effort when they can work on Gears of War 2.
As for Cole being a "sterotype" urban black person. Yeah i can kind of see that but hes also my favourite character in Gears of War. Hes just damn cool, much cooler than Marcus or Dom which brings me to the point why the developers want to focus on Dom since no one i knew really cared about the guy?
But yeah, really looking forward to Gears 2. Hopefully the online multiplayer interface isn't complete trash this time. One thing i'd love is if Epic went and released a final patch for Gears on 360 and fix all the horrible glitches and achievement problems it has.
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:13PM
I liked Marcus, but honestly, he was pretty flat compared to Dom and Cole. Dom was a better developed character imo, and I liked him alot. And Cole Train was the best. I see what they mean by stereotyping, but I like him that way! Who better to go into battle with than a crazy football star?
I guess the question is, does anyone here who's also black find Cole Train's character demeaning? If so, then yeah, change him. But I find him really fun.
aristokrat @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:26PM
I can't quit you Dom.
RogueStorm @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:18PM
Cole Train should have been voiced over by Morgan Freeman and should have been overly analytical. Maybe a black man's version of Gordon Freeman. You know, the stereotypical black guy who isn't a stereotypical black guy because someone would say, "That black guy in that game is so stereotypical!"
I would love to hear Cole Train talk about inane things like bullet trajectory, blood spatter patterns and the physiological differences between humans and their alien enemies.
caramelzappa @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:49AM
A black version of Gordan Freeman? Gordan Freeman doesn't talk...
GaryM @ Apr 23rd 2008 7:43AM
A black guy named "Coal"? Nothing wrong with that. ;)
And nice to see them finally admitting they ripped off Kill.switch. It always bugged me seeing uninformed gamers and reviewers rattle on about Gears' "innovative" cover system.
matucho @ Jun 10th 2008 12:43PM
We need more badass butch female characters in video games. Like Vazquez from Aliens but even more butch if possible. Cliffy B recently said that he wants to make GOW2 more girlfriend friendly and he thinks that he can accomplish that by simply just not making any female characters with ginormous breast and having better options for adjusting the difficulty level of the game. Well I guess thats fine but we need more. We need bad ass hardcore butch female soldiers in the squad armed to the teeth to take on some locust, not just some bi-standing female character with moderate breast size that you dont even get as a playable character.
I say strap on some amour on Maria Santiago and give her a lancer so she can kick some locust ass! Well I dont want to pick on GOW to much its still a great game, so pretty please with sugar on top, please Cliffy B give us kick ass women for GOW2 If it really is humanitys last stand then everyone should stand up and fight!
Check out this link for more info on Cliffy B intentions for GOW2:
