Konami ID site stabilized, Metal Gear Online beta registration commences
37
There's nothing "quick" about having to register three unique IDs to play the Metal Gear Online beta. But, assuming most would-be participants have already got a PlayStation Network account, the real pre-game obstacle has been the Konami ID and its supplementary Game ID. Since the beta (with its laggard update patch) was released for download last Wednesday, the Konami ID registration site has been a case study in how not to prepare for a traffic spike. Thankfully, the site is now back online with a temporary "quick registration" option for those of you eager to push past the bureaucracies and land in some actual gameplay, um, rather, return to the waiting room...

online gaming should be free ... and it should function like an autistic 6 year old who just ate an entire one pound bag of M&M's
$50 a year is a slap in the face.

... This is free. I guess that was a totally unrelated dig at Xbox Live in which case I would ask that you at least try to keep things on topic.
For example: This whole mandatory multiple IDs thing is preposterous.
And not: I like cheese.

This is what free gets you...
I have both a paid XBL and PSN account and can tell you the $28/year (look around if you're paying $50 you're a tool) is money very well spent.
On topic: I just got my beta disc this weekend and agree that this registration is convoluted beyond belief...

Even though the MGAwesome icon should've been evidence enough, if he truly is a MGS fan... hey, that just means that's yet another cool person on the Joystiq staff in my book.
It's a short book, filled with colouring pages, various Metal Gear sketches, a Playboy Model of the Month pin-up, and connect the dots. But it's still cool and it fits in your pocket. :]

Great, but I'm still missing the point of your earlier criticism: "$50 a year is a slap in the face."
If you meant to say that XBL is a superior service, if only it didn't cost $50 a year ... well, you didn't communicate that at all with your statement. I'll say something clever about *your* educational institution now and we'll all get a good laugh out of it.

I'm still waiting to cofirm my email address. This Konami ID, Gamer ID business sucks. Definetly entering "Wii" level of online crappiness with that stuff. "Here's my PSN ID, my gamer ID and my Konami ID"
wtf?

I was also able to finally register on Sunday. I was pretty drunk by time to pick my player ID and wrote it down. The next day I saw my player ID and was like, WTF!!!

... I reread the post, and I don't see where we're laying any blame on PSN. Please point it out.
We did point out that you need a PSN id (which is true) -- surely we didn't say that in a pejorative manner. The two totally ancillary (and frustratingly mandatory) IDs from Konami on the other hand ...

Sorry Chris, I was not commenting on the story, more on the people blindly bashing PSN for something that has absolutely nothing to do with PSN. I probably just should have replyed to Miyagi.
I agree whole heartly with the story. I was one of the lucky ones to get a 9 digit ID code :(

Why are you making excuses for Sony? They have the power to stop this kind of bullshit from running on their system. Having an "open" system is just a cop-out.
I REALLY hate the whole "simple registration" excuse people are giving. It is two more god damn names and passwords I have to remeber. Why can't they be the same? Why the hell does Konami need TWO?
THE ENTIRE POINT OF PSN IS THE SINGLE LOGIN!
THIS IS BULLSHIT!

You know, having multiple userids for a Konami ID may make sense if there was something more than "MGSO Beta" in their games section. Have ANYTHING been announced besides MGS to use the Konami ID? This seems like they're setting up their own service sort of like Acclaim or NCSoft, but without the games.

kinshadow... the benefit of an open system is that developers are free to do their own systems. For example, you will likely be able to use your NCSoft account on PS3. Likewise, they COULD use the PSN if they choose.
The disadvantage is when some developers try to be unique. Annoying you and once again throwing the blame on Sony instead of the foolish Konami.
No, this is Konami's fuckup. Period. This is not Sony's issue and if Sony wants MGS4, they basically have to go along with it. Just like if Microsoft wants EA games, they have to let EA run, and proceed to shut down, their own servers. They got em by the balls, jack.

There is only one reason for 2 IDs.... 1 to play and the other to buy the other shit. That is why you do your Konami ID first.

@Matt B
Actually James Cameron is doing a different movie named "Avatar" but its not related the cartoon. But M. Night is making an Avatar movie called "The Last Airbender" due July 2010. I love M. Night and I hope it makes a great movie. Oh yeah, its going to be live action and a triology.

My bad, still stoked about it!!! I hope it follows the cartoon to a T personally. I think it is very well done for a kids show. It's much deeper than most cartoon offerings.

You only have to have the game id + password to play. Not the konami id.

For future map pack purchases of MGO do you think this will keep MGO users from sharing map packs like we do in Warhawk over PSN? Ummm.
