Burnout Paradise getting motorcycles, night driving this August
The Burnout franchise, visceral as it is, has always shied away from real carnage by removing the human element altogether, what with cars driving and mangling each other as if channeling Herbie. That looks to be changing, however, with Criterion announcing a planned update to the game this August codenamed "Davis" that will introduce motorcycles -- complete with human drivers -- to the crash-centric streets of Paradise City.
According to the developer, the bikes will get their own modes and challenges, as well as new locations designed to suit their two-wheeled shenanigans, though we hope against hope for the ragdoll hilarity that would be the game's Showtime mode for those riding a bike. In addition, the update will also see the sun setting on Paradise City for the first time with night time racing, no doubt increasing the number of head-on collisions as motorcycle enthusiasts skid along the pavement at record distances.

It's EA, i wouldn't hold your breath.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:48PM
So far, everything has been free so far but truth be told, an addition this big, I'd be willing to fork over $20 at regular intervals rather than getting it simply added to Paradise City and rereleased annually like other EA series.
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:59PM
No kidding. This is gonna be HOT. I'd pay a few bucks for this. Evil Kanevel!!
Anticrawl @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:15PM
So are they going to add people to all the cars now? I kinda wanna see them bounce around all crash dummy style. They could atleast put in crash dummies, how fun would that be? Ejection from acidents and paint all over the steering wheel?
PojoMofo @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:36PM
dude flying off bikes FTW!!!
FOXHOUND @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:39PM
Now I really wish it had a BURNOUT3-style crash mode and offline splitscreen multiplayer...

That was my first thought;
Whats gona happen to the rider in a crash?
Will there be blood?

Good question..
I really hope this is free, I was just contemplating yesterday that to make Burnout Paradise perfect, it was missing bikes nad night time.
Thanks you Criterion (only if its free)

I wonder how they're going to pull off motorcycles.
In the Burnout podcasts, the developers have mentioned on more than one occasion that they don't put drivers in the cars because they would have to deal with the ragdoll physics, and that would add complexity to the game.
Now, with motorcycles, they're either going to have to bite the bullet and work on ragdoll physics code, or do something totally unrealistic like have the rider suddenly disappear in the event of a crash.
PojoMofo @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:27PM
or just have the guy on the bike totally stationary, like it was part of the bike.
At any rate, to get it to work well, yeah they are going to have to have the dude fly off the bike realistically, i mean this game above all other racing games is about the crashs
Lekko @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:33PM
Actually, this just occurred to me. Ragdoll physics INSIDE a car that is crushed flat in a crash. That is kinda an issue.
Britton @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:39PM
I'm really impressed with Criterion and the content they're planning on giving us. It's cool to see a company so on fire about their game to the point where they want to constantly expand it.
On a side note, I read in the latest EGM that GTA IV will be incorporating the online styling that Burnout Paradise recently coined; I couldn't think of a better game to adapt said style to. I'm so stoked!
caustic @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:39PM
awesome. my digital legs still have way to much digital flesh on them. problem solved.
Bad Mojo @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:48PM
You need to have one seriously upgraded hard drive to hold all this extra content...
I'm starting to feel bad for my PS3's puny 60GB :(
FOXHOUND @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:03PM
Well, the price of SATA2.5 drives have been descending. A local store to me sells a 250GB for $135-140; depending on manufacturer.
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:49PM
imagine people with their puny 20 gig drives...
but you shouldn't worry i bought a 250 gig back in January for $105 from geeks.com. My drive is loaded with divx movies.
FOXHOUND @ Apr 24th 2008 10:56AM
That's cheaper than most of the places I've searched... I'll have to check it out after work. Much thanks for the mention. :]
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:49PM
Fuck yes....
Developers, pay attention. This is how you recover from Takedown... and series doldrums.
Britton @ Apr 23rd 2008 6:21PM
Dittoz.
deaftly @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:49PM
Gimme Crash Mode dammit!
Dyost @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:56PM
I really doubt it'll be free alot of content is being added to enhance the game itself as apossed to an update, patch or other gimmicky types of dlc that has no afffect on the game what so ever.
Neil @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:53PM
Promise, promise, promise.
Come back and tell me when I can say deliver, deliver, deliver to anything Criterion Games has done recently.
PojoMofo @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:56PM
You dont think they have supported Burnout Paradise enough?? I think they have been doing a fantastic job.
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:57PM
You sir with your perfect dark avatar are an ass.
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:58PM
You sir with your perfect dark avatar are an uninformed ass.
riggs @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:56PM
i might think of buying this now
theturtle363 @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:18PM
BUT STILL NO CRASH MODE!
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:51PM
When you say no crash mode you mean what showtime isn't good enough for you? It sticks to the open world/no loading principle of the rest of the game just fine.
ToRo @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:49PM
I would buy the game, and that add on... if the damn game had a retry option. Good thing i rented it.
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:54PM
If you fail an event, just go do the nearest one to you. the only time not having a retry becomes an issue is when you complete majority of the events which i doubt you did in your rental period.
... @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:37PM
Burnout Paradise is now an instant purchase.
Free or not free something tells me the support this game is getting is only the tip of the iceburg.
SillyShiggy WSN (if it had one): lovsatan @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:41PM
If I'm following your sentiments correctly:
Mario Kart + motocycles = bad idea
Burnout + motorcycles = good idea
Is that about right? Did I mess up the math somewhere? I forgot to carry the one, didn't I?
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:55PM
"if they aren't hatin on you, you aren't doing it good enough" words to live buy.
PojoMofo @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:00PM
Nintendo didnt want to spend the $3 in R&D to figure out how to make the cheapest possible set of plastic Motorcycle handbars for the wiimote.
SillyShiggy WSN (if it had one): lovsatan @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:14PM
Hey, I AM Nintendo. I know how much things cost. Three bucks doesn't even cover the cost of the toilet paper we use during planning meeting breaks.
TheOverlord#2 SPEAKS: YOU READ IT NOW(Brawl: 1461-5875-9923) @ Apr 23rd 2008 6:34PM
The $100 bill toilet paper is so much better than Charmin!
PojoMofo @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:01PM
I agree Kola, its seems like there was so much to do that the retry option became kinda irrelevent.
ToRo @ Apr 23rd 2008 6:37PM
So your telling me, that if I fail a 5 min race, and the closest event near me is a stunt run but I'm using a speed car, am i supposed to drive back all the way to the junkyard and change cars? When I played Paradise, i just played it for the events, i didn't want to free roam, i didn't want to explore, i just wanted to do the events!
Kola @ Apr 23rd 2008 7:51PM
guy you can never ever ever be good a burnout paradise if you don't have some sort of mental map of the city in your head. you would never survive online.
Deck @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:02PM
Oh this is uber!
Go go Criterion!
arrrgh @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:20PM
+1 FOR YOU ONCE AGAIN CRITERION!!!
man am i glad i bought burnout
J @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:56PM
Do we get ragdolls to fling through the windshields of other vehicles as well? It seems kind of strange to have a drivers on the motorcycles but then still have nobody in the cars.
wes @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:28PM
The drivers in the cars have their seatbelts on...
Vyrtigo @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:53PM
At least they aren't adding motorcycles and rain and calling it a sequel. (I'm looking at you PGR)
Jon2309 @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:04PM
What? EA NOT being moneygrabbing? *dies*
Although that's a pretty good point mind... glad I got this instead of PGR4. :)
Jon2309 @ Apr 23rd 2008 5:02PM
Even if it isn't free, I've gotta say this is a pretty monumentous step forward for games.
Why? Most games (Halo 3 + CoD4) are built for the addition of new content as, well, something you'd expect from a FPS.
However, Burnout? And it's not just like they're adding vehicles only, the game is so open to new content that new cities and entire new vehicle types are available. Crazy stuff indeed.
For once, I salute thee, EA.
