The Burnout franchise, visceral as it is, has always shied away from real carnage by removing the human element altogether, what with cars driving and mangling each other as if channeling Herbie. That looks to be changing, however, with Criterion announcing a planned update to the game this August codenamed "Davis" that will introduce motorcycles -- complete with human drivers -- to the crash-centric streets of Paradise City.
According to the developer, the bikes will get their own modes and challenges, as well as new locations designed to suit their two-wheeled shenanigans, though we hope against hope for the ragdoll hilarity that would be the game's Showtime mode for those riding a bike. In addition, the update will also see the sun setting on Paradise City for the first time with night time racing, no doubt increasing the number of head-on collisions as motorcycle enthusiasts skid along the pavement at record distances.

So far, everything has been free so far but truth be told, an addition this big, I'd be willing to fork over $20 at regular intervals rather than getting it simply added to Paradise City and rereleased annually like other EA series.

That was my first thought;
Whats gona happen to the rider in a crash?
Will there be blood?

Good question..
I really hope this is free, I was just contemplating yesterday that to make Burnout Paradise perfect, it was missing bikes nad night time.
Thanks you Criterion (only if its free)

I wonder how they're going to pull off motorcycles.
In the Burnout podcasts, the developers have mentioned on more than one occasion that they don't put drivers in the cars because they would have to deal with the ragdoll physics, and that would add complexity to the game.
Now, with motorcycles, they're either going to have to bite the bullet and work on ragdoll physics code, or do something totally unrealistic like have the rider suddenly disappear in the event of a crash.

or just have the guy on the bike totally stationary, like it was part of the bike.
At any rate, to get it to work well, yeah they are going to have to have the dude fly off the bike realistically, i mean this game above all other racing games is about the crashs

I'm really impressed with Criterion and the content they're planning on giving us. It's cool to see a company so on fire about their game to the point where they want to constantly expand it.
On a side note, I read in the latest EGM that GTA IV will be incorporating the online styling that Burnout Paradise recently coined; I couldn't think of a better game to adapt said style to. I'm so stoked!

You need to have one seriously upgraded hard drive to hold all this extra content...
I'm starting to feel bad for my PS3's puny 60GB :(

Developers, pay attention. This is how you recover from Takedown... and series doldrums.

I really doubt it'll be free alot of content is being added to enhance the game itself as apossed to an update, patch or other gimmicky types of dlc that has no afffect on the game what so ever.

If I'm following your sentiments correctly:
Mario Kart + motocycles = bad idea
Burnout + motorcycles = good idea
Is that about right? Did I mess up the math somewhere? I forgot to carry the one, didn't I?

Hey, I AM Nintendo. I know how much things cost. Three bucks doesn't even cover the cost of the toilet paper we use during planning meeting breaks.

So your telling me, that if I fail a 5 min race, and the closest event near me is a stunt run but I'm using a speed car, am i supposed to drive back all the way to the junkyard and change cars? When I played Paradise, i just played it for the events, i didn't want to free roam, i didn't want to explore, i just wanted to do the events!

Do we get ragdolls to fling through the windshields of other vehicles as well? It seems kind of strange to have a drivers on the motorcycles but then still have nobody in the cars.

At least they aren't adding motorcycles and rain and calling it a sequel. (I'm looking at you PGR)

What? EA NOT being moneygrabbing? *dies*
Although that's a pretty good point mind... glad I got this instead of PGR4. :)

Even if it isn't free, I've gotta say this is a pretty monumentous step forward for games.
Why? Most games (Halo 3 + CoD4) are built for the addition of new content as, well, something you'd expect from a FPS.
However, Burnout? And it's not just like they're adding vehicles only, the game is so open to new content that new cities and entire new vehicle types are available. Crazy stuff indeed.
For once, I salute thee, EA.
