Earthworm Jim is sort of an anomaly. It's been 13 years since he last starred in a good game, but people still call out for his return. If Kid Icarus had been a good game, he'd be the Pit of the annelid world. Now, after breaking our hearts with the 2007 cancellation of his PSP game, it seems that Jim is finally poised to make his return. Interplay has announced a new deal with original creator Douglas TenNapel to revive Jim.
So far, plans reportedly include "an animated series and feature film to expand the well known brand" and, most importantly, Earthworm Jim 4 for unspecified consoles (which we sort of knew about already). As much as we'd like to be excited, after being strung along on Jim's hook for more than a decade, "cautiously optimistic" is the best we can muster.
If TenNapel goes through with this, I will personally give him a reacharound. I hooked my Genesis back up a while ago just to play EWJ1 and EWJ2, or at least tried too, since I can't find the AC adapter for it. D:
Bungee-jumping with Major Mucus in EWJ1 and the entire series of "Puppy Love" stages from EWJ2 are my favorite moments. Honorable mention goes to the sexy island music from the stage "Flying King" in EWJ2.
Douglas TenNapel once gave me a Boombots t-shirt. In order to get it, I had to scream out, "Sony is a fascist!" He just finished a panel on the dificulties indie developers face creating games, and he talked a lot about how Sony made it near impossible for indie devs to succeed on the PS1 due to the requirement of expensive dev equipment. He said that Boombots would be his last game unless Sony gave some assistance to the indie devs. I'm glad he's getting back into games because he's a talented guy.
Its about time really. Doug TenNaple is a goddamn genius. His art is amazing. I long for the day of a live action animatronic movie with Mr. TenNaple as the production designer and Rob Schrab directing.
We had to write a journal in 5th grade every week and most of it was EWJ fan-fiction.
EWJ the original is my all time favorite game. None of the sequels could touch it, though 2 was a decent romp. Unless we're going back to 2-D I don't give a shit about EWJ4. Also is Dave "Shiny" Perry back on board? I doubt it.
