Fanboys, prepare for masochism after the break with this week's NSFW review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Zero Punctuation beats up Smash Bros. Brawl ... you're surprised?
132
This is the Zero Punctuation that'll make the Nintendo Defense Force mobilize and threaten nuclear annihilation. This week Yahtzee takes on one of the Wii's golden cows with his review wholesale bludgeoning of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For those just joining the ZP party, Yahtzee doesn't like Nintendo very much. If you love SSBB, great. If you don't like it, that's great too. Just sit back and enjoy the review for the spectacle in hatred it is.
Fanboys, prepare for masochism after the break with this week's NSFW review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

At this point, I can't imagine many people take Yahtzee's opinions seriously: everyone know's exactly what he's going to say before they press play. That said, we all still watch it for the way he does it.
This week was decent, but last week was much funnier. It was kind of low on jokes, though I lol'd at "My friend Guy's house."

Yahtzee is an individual with his own opinion, Too many times when a genre or franchise that has been shoved out there way past its time, any dissenting remarks are hailed as not being accurate. Its about the same in the US where you say something negative about the current administration your with the terrorist. C'mon people acknowledge that Mario is an important part of Nintendo but other franchises die a dignified death, and we remember them as classics. I Stand behind Yahtzee as a person not afraid to hold back, Yahtzee keep doing what you do.

Ehhh. This was pretty weak. He seems to just hate on fanboys here. The game has it's flaws, but he didn't state any of them. Instead he just sounds misinformed and elitist. But that's why we love 'em.
Posted: Apr 24th 2008 12:01AM (Unverified) said
I think that elitist word is being used way to much now ... If I had a nickel every time Sean Hannity called Barack Obama an elitist ... well ... I would have a shit load of nickels ... Seriously, enough with the word elitist

I like his stuff, but he's reviewing a game he hates, on a system he hates, only because he's pressured into doing the review? Of course it's going to be negative.

There's a big reason why SSB isn't as prone to button mashing as any other fighter.
That reason is that the basic premise is unintuitive. Every other fighter is "Once you beat someone to 0 health, you win." With SSB, it's "It doesn't really matter how many times you beat the other person, the only real objective is to cause them to not be able to get back on to the platform, but oh, half of the fighters can sorta fly, so have fun. Oh, and most of the stages will probably kill you too."
Sure, there's strategy involved, but SSB really needs you to decide to commit to learn its system since the fighters are so ridiculously unbalanced. It is seriously the most unfun game to pick up that Nintendo makes.

Only played the game a little with random people who had it, but I'm pretty sure once you get the other person's % high enough, most of the stronger moves can flat out kill them (send them flying off the screen with no possibility of recovery). So I don't think it's just about knocking/keeping them off the platform.

To me, this is the funniest video this guys done. I like how he's not going after the lameness of the game but also the lameness of the gamers (aka "that guy".)
You people claim Yahtzee's bias because he didn't care to play the game or not. No, that's the lack of bias. For the first time ever, you're noticing a guy that doesn't care about the hype of this game...ho-hum to you guys = negative interest. Pfft... It's every other f'n reviewer that was/is bias.
As a reviewer you shouldn't have ANY predisposed idea about the game. He played the game with a group of people that did not care either way whether they wanted to play the game or not. That's PERFECT for an true critical experiment.
It's EVERYONE ElSE that's bias and he's the first to even TOUCH on the lameness that is SSBB. He just TOUCHED on it and my god are people irrationally pissed about it. The game should be selling itself to you. It needs to impress you and create interest where there wasn't before...not the other way around.
SSBB is about as MEH of a conservative sequel to a conservative sequel can get. Take off your hype-goggles for half a second...those goggles you wore for 24 months before the game was even released.
And unlockable characters are a HORRIBLE idea for a game. There is no point...not everyone goes to gamefaqs for quick answers to unlocking characters...why the hell would you want to? do you actually enjoy playing the same map 10 times in a row?
I've been playing this game for weeks and JUST got toon link and still to get Wolf and Jigglypuff, which I don't think i'll ever get cause i'm pretty much done with this game. The only reason I got toon link is because someone told me how to do it. If you need "something to look forward to" in the game, then the game isn't keeping your interest.
And needless to say Smash bros does NOT have much depth at all. Memorization of hitboxes, mastering needlessly sloppy controls and crap like that is not depth. Sorry.
If you ever watch some of the best Smash Bros players play, they're doing nothing special...but they're awesome because they've essentially overcome horrible controls. Ya know, something that no reviewer has even bothered to mention. This game still handles inputs like an Atari game, C stick still doesn't work...etc.

Ugh. Yahtzee fanboiz. It has more depth and things to do than any other fighting game. It's not hard to go onto a popular website and learn how to unlock some characters. Seriously. In less than an hour you can unlock all the characters, most of the stages, and a lot of music. This takes less than an hour usually.
I could say the same thing about Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Metal Gear Solid as you do about Brawl. There's nothing REALLY new/revolutionary there, just a shiny new coat of paint and some kewl new features. 3D? meh. It's not 4D. How cares. The controls suck.
Complaining about C-sticking not working? lawl lulz lol random XD
Ima go play the Wii's best game, No More Heroes.

Yeah, it's a translation thing, so Mars=Marth. Same thing with Aeris=Aerith. Fun fact: his name is Marth in the games but Mars in the anime =/

This man speaks the truth. Seriously whose wise idea was it to advertise Snake and Sonic in all forms of media, on the back of the bloody box, then make it so you have to play through a 7hr long solo game and deal with the awful fanfic story line to unlock'em?
The icing on the cake though was Nintendo telling reviewers that they where not allowed to mention those two in anyway, it would be considered spoilers. Heaven forbid turning the box around.

This guy needs some perspective. Or at the very least pick up the manual and read it. This "review" is nothing short of fanservice and flamebait.

Have you actually read the instruction manual? I've played brawl games since the 64 version and the explanations to how to play the game confused me.
English version was obviously hurried...much like everything else that was implemented for the english version...cough cough *voice acting*

Smash Bros brawl is just a dated excuse for fighting game that doesn't get the party style or the fighter style right. I have no idea why people are attracted to it.

Button Mashing...
SSBB is an ARENA STYLE game. There is no such thing as button mashing when it comes to movement and timed attacks you retards.
Button mashing is for games like DoA or Tekken, where you are set on a stage where you cant turn or run or basically move other than left and right and always 100% look at your opponent. THAT is a game you can button mash on because all you do is look at your opponent and press whatever the hell you like.. ok admittedly there is SOME coordination and timing.. but to say SSBB is a button masher to any other fighter is retarded.
SSBB on the other hand, as said above is an arena style game.. for you retards that don't even own a Wii and try to bash the game, allow me to explain how SSBB works.
You are set in a large arena match, you can move; LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN ACCROSS/HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL. you can FACE AWAY from your opponent, you can TRAVEL, DODGE, MENUVER, FLY, TELEPORT ETC ETC ETC...
Every move is very fast or timed attacks, like a smash attacks. You CANT button mash these because they are all about timing and speed.. you will either fumble all your attacks or your opponent will dodge you or move away or counter attack EASILY.
How could this be a button masher if you have to move away or follow your opponent and time attacks or use the environment etc... a button masher IS and ALWAYS will be a 1v1/2v2 fighting game like Streetfighter, Tekken etc..
I hope one day all you retards get to play SSBB, I cant wait to see your priceless faces of getting owned by a Nintendo fan whom is doing the opposite of "button mashing"
And no i'm not a fanboy of any kind, I own ps3/360/wii/PC and enjoy them all in different ways.

t this point I think the topic is sorta dead, but regardless I have my two cent to put in. For example why has it become accepted that to like a popular game you must be a fan boy? Has the video game scene reached the point where you must only like the obscure titles or else you are a poser? Brawl was a hyped game, it sold obscene numbers in the first week. Obviously some people liked it, as I doubt people like to pay $50 for a game just because they like to burn money, yet if you defend the game at all you are immediately labeled as a slack-jawed, close-minded (insert parent company name) fan boy.
Also, I kind of felt this was a fairly weak episode, as Yahtzee was kinda vague towards Brawl and seemed to be criticizing the fighting genre in general(ie. button mashing, locked characters, the guy). At least with the other Nintendo franchises he reviewed the focus was on the games themselves.
But in closing the whole review/ game can be summed up as this: Some people like it, some people hate it and the Earth continues to turn.

Oh and for this review, incorrect and retarded.
Yahtzee is FUNNY, and only funny... he shouldn't or be listened to for a game review because 90% of the time he is wrong/biased/nofacts.
In this review, he said so many incorrect facts.. he practically admitted he was biased.
He hated the game before he even played it, inc his friends.. so basically its OBVIOUS he wouldn't like it till the end, people like him don't change their mind. You CANNOT review a game if you don't have a clear open mind and not even going to attempt to look at the good sides of the game or compare it to what's on today's market...
Sorry to sound like a fanboy, but its fucking unbelievable how many retarded fanboys are in this thread absolutely crying in happiness because Yahtzee shares their hate for Mario.

Anyone here ever heard of the saying "The one who makes you laugh is always right"? Because it's incredibly true with Yathzee. He has a very charismatic voice, and one thing that charismatic people do is make you believe everything they say without even realizing it.
I find Yahtzee hilarious, been watching him since I found his Fable review on Youtube, but I almost never agree with him on anything (expcet for Turok, game was shit). Just, be aware that he is more or less hypnotizing you when you watch his movies.
Also, this was probably his weakest review. He spent like, 45 seconds talking about the game itself, and the rest of it talking about being that guy, fanservice and GAME TRADERS ROBINA.

I love how fashionable it is to bash on Brawl, the truth is its a fun game, whether youre THAT GUY or not. Simply because THAT GUY can die in a flash amoungst the madness of multiplayer Brawl. Anyways ill admit it im a N fanboy, so by blood im bound to defend this game, well thats my two cents, count it!
