And the Madden 09 cover goes to ... Brett Favre?
Well, one way to dodge the "Madden Curse" is to just not play. Indeed, recent retiree Brett Favre will be drafted onto the cover of Madden NFL 09, reports GameDaily. While the choice seems somewhat peculiar, it's possible Favre was chosen to represent the 20th Anniversary edition of the game because of his iconic status. The long-time Packers QB is one of, if not the most familiar and celebrated player in recent NFL history (heck, he even starred in that Farrelley brothers flick some years back -- what was it ... something about a Mary?). So, what's it gonna take to get Old #4 to lace 'em up one last season and test his record streak against the mighty curse?

Lets hope the gameplay is like quarterback club if Farve is coming back to video games.
In fact I just wish Acclaim Sports was still around.
Bleu @ Apr 24th 2008 4:38PM
FUCK EA and FUCK MADDEN!
JS Beckerist @ Apr 24th 2008 4:46PM
Forget Acclaim! We still have Midway...where's my BLITZ FIX?!
And while I'm on this particular topic, I'm hearing that Blitz: The League 2 details are coming soon. No news on a new Hitz game though!
Myke @ Apr 24th 2008 8:04PM
2K sports on Dreamcast was the best!!! Nobody was touching that NFL 2K series. The good ol days....
el serpiente @ Apr 24th 2008 8:29PM
Yeah, 2K really was the shit on Dreamcast. The gameplay was TIGHT. It's a shame they got squeezed out by EA. Weren't they selling it for $19.99?
Never buying Madden again (not too difficult, I'm not a huge football junkie), nor any EA sports games. They are a pit of mediocrity.
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ Apr 24th 2008 3:59PM
If he does come back, he is absolutely assured in getting a debilitating injury.
NATO_Duke @ Apr 24th 2008 4:01PM
Seems to me they could have a blank cover that just says:
"Madden 09
Buy this now."
That would still sell way too many copies.
[.sm0ke.] @ Apr 24th 2008 4:39PM
They could put goatse on the cover and sell a bajillion copies.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 24th 2008 5:14PM
"They could put goatse on the cover and sell a bajillion copies".
I wonder if that would grant it a M for mature. If they put Goatse in the cover they should also place a Stadium shaped like Goatse but they proably charge for it and people would still buy it.
343 Guilty Fart @ Apr 24th 2008 5:29PM
Why don't they just put John Madden eating a cheeseburger??
guttertalk @ Apr 24th 2008 5:37PM
Well, if they're going to put Favre on the cover, we can look forward to Y.A. Tittle, Sammy Baugh, and Bobby Lane. None of them have to worry about a curse.
Orionsaint @ Apr 24th 2008 4:02PM
He still may not dodge the curse. It could come out that he bet on football or drug possesion and he's kicked outta the hall of fame.
CGamble20 @ Apr 24th 2008 5:24PM
Of which he isn't yet a part of...but I got the joke.
Yuccadude @ Apr 24th 2008 4:06PM
I saw his second-to-last game last season when they blew the Seahawks out of the water, and when I went to vote to see who would be the cover man, I was thinking he would be perfect for it, so no one else would be "cursed".
vidGuy @ Apr 24th 2008 4:09PM
I bumped that game from my Tivo to DVD the next day. The Pack played like crap against the Giants, but the Seahawks game was truly one to remember. Coming from behind, in the snow at Lambeau, crazy passes and plays... that game will be known throughout football history.
Mr Khan @ Apr 24th 2008 4:49PM
It would have been much more poetic if they had beaten the Giants, then the Patriots
Gewurztraminer says: R.O.B. is the last Cylon! @ Apr 25th 2008 10:47AM
@ Mr. Kahn -
I agree yet have mixed feelings about that as I'm a Giants AND Packers fan. As satisfying as it was to see the Giants come back and beat the Patriots so soon after their loss to them, it would have been even better to see Favre come out with another Superbowl win. Especially since it turned out to be his last season :(
But hey, Favre on the cover? Perhaps i'll actually buy a Madden game?
vidGuy @ Apr 24th 2008 4:07PM
Well, last I heard Favre hadn't officially done all of the paperwork to get out of his contracts with the Packers, so he's not retired yet. The Packers need to make a clean break from him in order to build the franchise around its new stars, but I see a long road of product endorsements, TV spots, and some guest commentating in Favre's future.
I wonder at the wisdom of this though. Favre is certainly a well-known player and deserves the HOF, but does he really sit well with the Madden crowd nowadays? But Nato's probably right, the cover athlete doesn't really matter anyhow.
vidGuy @ Apr 24th 2008 4:11PM
Guess I'm behind on the Pack news, they are retiring Favre's jersey in the season opener, so he's gotta be officially done. Bout time, I say.
Fox318 @ Apr 24th 2008 4:14PM
The Packers are retiring his number at the begining of the season so I don't think Farve would come back after that.
Then again Jordan came back.
Mr Khan @ Apr 24th 2008 4:50PM
And then he came back again...
FOXHOUND @ Apr 25th 2008 7:57AM
I don't think he'll follow those footsteps. Besides, I wouldn't want him playing for the Brewers... weird sausage racing masc-- anyway, Go Pack', Go! XD
Anthony @ Apr 28th 2008 2:32AM
vidGuy - Bears or Vikings?
vidGuy @ Apr 28th 2008 11:49AM
@Anthony,
Easy: Vikings. They've been floundering lately so they aren't a huge threat and I like a lot of their players, especially Adrian Peterson. My roommate's a Bears fan and I never heard the end of it from the Packers-Bears games this season. Getting a die-hard Packers fan to say anything nice about the Bears is probably as hard as getting the poster of Brett Favre off of John Madden's bedroom wall.
It's going to be hell living in Chicago next year.
Cole Mullenbach @ Apr 24th 2008 4:13PM
I think EA is trying to give Favre a heart attack... The curse will never be broken and Favre is no exception... even if he doesnt play
nyro519 @ Apr 24th 2008 4:14PM
wow i was almost certain that adrian peterson(from the vikings not the bears) was going to be on the cover
Donald @ Apr 24th 2008 4:27PM
They learned their lesson after Vince Young, no more rookies.
Ringo @ Apr 24th 2008 4:18PM
Handball! Oh wait its rugby?
The Fuzz 53 @ Apr 24th 2008 4:23PM
I guarantee he falls off his tractor or wrecks his truck sometime in the next year.
Jansperus @ Apr 24th 2008 4:45PM
Call me skeptical, but I doubt Brett Favre will be able to escape the evil curse. Satan is quite the persistent pecker.
pandlcg @ Apr 24th 2008 4:54PM
Madden's man-crush on Favre is now complete
deft @ Apr 24th 2008 5:12PM
Only one man is going to break the curse, and that man is FARVE.
4AW.
Now I have a good reason to buy this year's edition.
Autopsy15 @ Apr 24th 2008 5:35PM
His daughter went to the same school as me. I think she graduated last year. And another funny thing is that Brett does local commercials for some car dealership around here.
Matt @ Apr 24th 2008 11:39PM
Bergstrom Automotive.
Try going to www.bergstromauto.com and NOT seeing him.
The damned advertisements must work... I've purchased two new cars from them in the past year and a half. :P
I live just outside of Green Bay, and the local frenzy over his retirement is ridiculous. Poor guy is lucky he isn't shot by an overzealous fan, angry over his retirement, on his way to the grocery store.
Autopsy15 @ Apr 26th 2008 2:09AM
Brett Farve doesn't actually live in Green Bay, he may own a home there, but he has a huge ranch here in Mississippi. Still not sure what car dealership it was though.
cold school @ Apr 24th 2008 5:47PM
Old, prone to mistakes, over-rated, and gushed over by the media.
Perfect!
vidGuy @ Apr 24th 2008 5:49PM
Compared to the flash-in-the-pan players or the felons and sex offenders on the recent covers?
Donald @ Apr 24th 2008 7:28PM
Don't forget the murderer.
John @ Apr 25th 2008 1:06AM
Well take out the old part and you could be talking about peyton manning too, maybe he'll get it next year
Keiichi @ Apr 24th 2008 5:48PM
At least this will show whether the curse is against the player or the team. If the Pack bomb out this year, we'll know why.
Shoulda put a Dolphin on the cover - hell, we need another #1 pick just to get back on our feet...
mr nimblewick @ Apr 24th 2008 9:52PM
I think were doomed to bomb by the "brett favre is retiring" curse.
Gewurztraminer says: R.O.B. is the last Cylon! @ Apr 25th 2008 10:52AM
Ricky Williams on the cover?
cold school @ Apr 24th 2008 5:49PM
Acheivement Unlocked!
Addicted to Vicodin.
CynicalStrike @ Apr 24th 2008 6:03PM
Screw the cover, what dumb gameplay gimmicks and blatant product placement are we gonna get this year? Maybe a mini-game before each quarter where you have to feed your players as many Whoppers as you can to max out their stamina? ESPN NFL 2K5 is still the best football game out, sucks EA has the NFL license till 2015 or whatever.
Johnny Socko @ Apr 24th 2008 6:26PM
"But what about Brett Favvv...re...?"
Best line in that movie.
takamaru @ Apr 24th 2008 7:24PM
High damn time!
D @ Apr 24th 2008 7:42PM
If the pack do badly this year, it'll be the curse of "Jeff Tedford" on Aaron Rodgers.
Neebs @ Apr 24th 2008 8:46PM
He'll get hit in a freak accident by a football related thing. Calling it.
Robert @ Apr 25th 2008 12:46AM
yup... just watched it.. cool. He deserves it.
Cerfer @ Apr 25th 2008 11:48AM
John Madden has had a man crush on Farve for the past ten years--that's the reason why he's finally on the cover.
