Mario Kart Wii: The Unboxing
47
We got home this afternoon to find a rather large shoebox at our doorstep. Contained within: our very own Mario Kart Wii. We can't simply enjoy our excitement alone, of course, so check out our unboxing gallery. We'll have full impressions of the anticipated racer soon.

Nah, it's all plastic shavings. They had to do something to get those Gamecubes so small after they duct-taped 'em together

Double Dash won't put up much of a struggle. It'll just lie there, waiting to be put out of its misery.

Double Dash is my favorite Mario Kart. Mario Kart 64 is way overrated.
Double Dash is the more professional game in the series... I just love that game.

Yeah... and this is coming from a Mario Kart junkie. It has the best controls... don't know why people didn't like it.
They seem to focus to much in the Two characters per kart thing. That is just aestethics.
The only diference is that instead of having one item, you can have two items at the same time. That was the only change.

I think you made a type Cesaria, didn't you mean:
DD is definitely over rated, and I will never understand why people don't like MK64. It's the best in the series.

Yes, Double Dash. It's his most played game of all time. Every weekend he and his family have tournaments. He challenges everyone to a game of it. He can bring the bluest of sparks.
I don't see why there's all this dislike for Double Dash. I personally loved it, the only qualm I had was the lack of hop.

Please, go play Mario Kart 64 on the VC. Its bad... people didnt like Double Dash because you actually needs extremely good skills to be good at that game.

Well, i've been playing this game for about a week as a privileged European (lawl) and i'll definitely vouch for this being better than DD; for a start it's not so noob friendly in that you can scrape against walls and expect to maintain a half-decent speed like you could in DD. Other than that, controls feel slightly sharper (though the wheel is gonna take some getting used to--if i can be bothered, that is) and the return of hopping and a more robust selection of vehicles makes this game feel like it was simply put together in a better way.
Thank god there's no more character-specific items. Me and my friends almost killed each other over who got to grab a Toad character in DD, as the golden mushroom was clearly a ridiculous item to give as an exclusive where others were laughable in comparison (come on, Mario and Luigi's fireballs were just plain sucky in comparison). Yeah, this game is just plain better. Hope you guys agree.
The only downside is the lack of double-teaming. It might have been nice to include it as a little extra, maybe, as it made for some interesting options when playing co-op. Of course, it's not something i'm distraught over, but if i'm gonna find comparative fault that's pretty much all there is. The map selection could be better, too, but what they've got is nice enough.

Rocker...
I've been playing 64 all week in preparation for the new iteration. Its even better than I remembered!
Meanwhile, Double Dash sits around unused, in corner, slowly dying.

My biggest qualm was the item distribution, it was over the top. Additionally, you couldn't drag shells behind you for protection like in 64. On top of that, the graphics were too bubbly as MK64 had a psuedo rendered look to it.

The item distribution made you think about who you had to race with, my favorite combo was paratrooper and baby bowser.
The lack of shell dragging bugged me at first too, until you realize they show you a little window telling you a red shell is coming, then you just throw the shell/banana back and block it. The game required quicker reflexes and more strategy.

Thats why you have two times... you can change items with the Z button... so, you just save a banana and use it whenever you want.

You are right... I play with Paratropa and Toad... with the Train Car.
It requieres a lot of skill and reflex... more than any other game in the series.

Yeah, that works too. I just thought it was more convenient to drag it behind my butt.
Oh well, enough griping, we can all battle online in a few days! And unlike Smash, no one beats me at MK!!

I'll admit, NOT being able to hold an item behind me on Double Dash threw me off. In fact, everything they changed at first threw me off. But I ADAPTED and learned to like a new game.
That being said, I'm annoyed all over again that changes have been made to MK:wii that I am used to from DD. But then again, if I wanted to simply replay DD, I would.

Who said this was shipped by Nintendo? More likely a game importer who is more used to shifting DVD cases.

DD was really fun to play with my brother. We killed many hours mastering the starts, turns, and the item swaps. I wish it was an option in this game, but I'll take online anyday over that.
Joystiq, can you have another article where we can swap friend codes?

Yo, get on MSN messenger or whatever and IM me, my screen name is FatassofKickassness. I'm willing to organize a tournament between us Joystiq regulars (although I doubt I could handle anything bigger than that).

Even though it's a Nintendo game online works really well on this.
It's a great game. Best in the series I say. I liked the DS one but Slim or Fat DS it would always hurt my thumbs a few tracks in.
Just thought I should say. The game is very good.

Course. IMO it's the 2nd best game in the series. Infact its probably the only game series that continuously gets better with each sequel... Along with Mario Kart and Smash Bros (but thats a new series anyways).
