A new study by Frank N. Magid Associates shows that 18% of HDTV purchasers in the last year bought one because of their Xbox 360 or PS3. GameDaily reports the study found that 5.5 million households purchased an HDTV for the first time in the last year and that 25% of households now have at least one HDTV set in the home.
Sony could come out a big winner if this trend continues, with the high-def movie format war locked up and the only console with HD movie playback built-in. Then again, we can only imagine the continuing Nintendo profit madness if there ever ended up being a Wii: Blu-ray edition.

First I went and bought myself a nice 20" lcd monitor for my computer. After playing 360 on my 27" SD set, I decided to buy the vga cable just to see what HD looked like (My monitor can support 1600x1050 or something like that so slightly higher then 720p.
Well I was blown away. I loved the widescreen most of all, and the sharpness. Well after gaming like this for 8 months I got pissed off at looking at such a small screen. I wanted to see gears of war in true 1080p on a big screen. Well I went and bought an hdtv just in time for halo 3. Although my set was also justified in the fact that I do watch alot of movies in hd on it so it was sorta purchased for both. I do 0 HDTV watching on my hdtv lol. Well except for smallville which ill grab fromt he torrent sites, which reminds me *goes to torrent site to find tonights episode*

Picked up my Samsung 56" LED DLP 1080p native rear proj a month after I got my PS3 for X-mas '07. So awesome... so awesome. Got my PS3 via HDMI, my media/web PC via VGA, gaming PC via DVI-2-HDMI, gaming laptop docking station via DVI-2-HDMI, DVD via component, and N64/GC/PS2 via composite for good measure. Also plugged a VCR into the 2nd antenna input, because the Pic-in-Pic input options are pretty restrictive, and the VCR gives me audio output and composite inputs for the PnP. Then there's the Dell 20" LCD next to the Samsung for the media PC and all the composite stuff too, just in case (all composites are split three ways for maximum versatility. even have the comp AV cables plugged into the PS3).
Mmmmmmm..... media overload.
P.S. HD programming? Pffft. If it ain't on Comedy Central or Adult Swim, it probably ain't worth watching. The internet is my History/Discovery/etc channel, without the corporate filter.

Yeah, I actually bought a Samsung TV when I got my Wii.
No 360 or PS3 though, I don't give a damn about either one.
But man my Wii games look gorgeous.

We've never had an HD set, just a 32" and 50" SDTVs and will get an HDTV right around getting a PS3 next month. Can't wait to see what everyone else has experienced for so long now! : )

I bought my LCD HDTV rougly two years ago after I bought my xbox360. Pretty much got it for the console itself. I love mine.
Though I can still play regular games with a composite input from my PS2 or GameCube just fine on a standard def TV, I still won't play Xbox360 or PS3 games on one.
I picked out my Samsung 23 (was a great size for my old room) inch LCD hdtv that ended up being the same tv on the Xbox360 kiosks.

Wow. Seems like that entire 25% are at joystiq.
Am I the only one here who doesn't have an HDTV? I don't think I know anyone who does either, though I think my parents are thinking of getting one.

You're not alone! I'd like a HDTV but not yet. I'm still not entirely happy with the quality of them save for the £1500+ models. By the time I get one the same quality will be a more realistic price for a TV.

I love watching console gamers talk about 480, 720, 1080.
My last two monitors easily break 1400.
No, I don't mean an SAT score.

Whoopy doo. My laptop screen goes to 1920x1200, higher than 1080p. So? Any monitor going over 1400 horizontal lines is going to cost about ten times more than a 1080p HDTV of equal size, and the HDTV actually comes with a tuner. And of course the hardware to run any game higher than 1400 horizontal lines at any remotely playable framerate is going to cost probably ten times more than a console.
Hell, how many PC games even support over 1200 horizontal lines? Yeah... kudos on your gaming-irrelevant monitors.

You know 1080 refers to the vertical resolution, right? Unless you have a 30" 2560x1600, you almost certainly don't have a monitor with greater than 1400 lines of vertical resolution. You're probably talking about a 1440x900 widescreen monitor, which is actually significantly less resolution than a 1080p set, which is 1920x1080.
That being said, a 24" 1920x1200 monitor (like I'm looking at right now) does have a slight resolution advantage over a 1080p TV, but not a lot.

I'm still waiting for a good reason to get one. Ie when the BBC give us this free HD service. And by the time that does happen HDTVs will be mega better and mega cheaper. Right now my 32" monitor acts as a kind of HDTV for consoles.
Well. The 1 console with proper VGA output.

This would probably be a lot closer to 100% in the UK, where HD broadcast TV had like one or two channels before the consoles were launched. None before the 360, I think. Maybe a couple of subscription movie channels.

Last June bought myself a PS3 and 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma for my birthday. Best purchase I've made in years. Totally not at all regretful of the purchase. It helps when you also have an HD TiVo.... so much TV is in HD these days, and it just looks so great. Of course, blu-ray looks better than the broadcast TV, but broadcast ain't bad.

I already had a 30'' HD TV in the main room and bought a 19'' HD last Christmas just to have my 360 closer. :-) I got both for the sole purpose of gaming.

I'm one of those 18%. Now that I've seen some Blu-ray DVDs, I appreciate the better quality it gives over standard def DVDs, but the main reason I bought an HDTV was for games.

60" sxrd for gaming and movies...and occasionally HD broadcast tv content ain't bad either...but I bought it 2-3(?) years ago and love it.
use it for my 360 and ps3--I use my Wii on a different EDTV that takes component input--that way I don't end up with an expensive broken screen (y'know--just in case) 'cuz I have the original launch Wii wrist straps and no rubber condom sleeve for the Wiimotes...

I also bought the 480p cords for the wii and i for the life of me can't see the difference. Where am i suppose to notice the improvements?

My 360 and Wii are the reason I bought mine earlier this year. Now that I've gone HD it makes me want to also get a PS3 even more.
