Keep on Kartin': A Mario Kart Retrospective
Nintendo has said it considers Mario Kart Wii a "bridge game" -- a title that converts casual, Wii Sports-playing Wii owners into a more hardcore, game-buying type. For those bridge gamers, this quick retrospective will help fill you in on the history that has made the Mario Kart series one of the most beloved in gaming. For everyone else, it's a stroll down memory lane and a starting point for discussion about your hopes and fears for the impending Mario Kart Wii.

I love you, Double Dash =p
A Pissed-off English Gamer @ Apr 25th 2008 11:14AM
This game's better than DD, Fernando. With any luck you'll have a joygasm.
aReEeNeN @ Apr 25th 2008 11:15AM
I wish you told us how you really feel, Fernando! :-P
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 25th 2008 11:18AM
By the reviews: Mario Kart Wii is very easy in the lower classes, 50cc and 100cc, so casuals can get into the game.
But, 150cc is really hard. Now, there's something that every time a Mario Kart is released is always talked: the luck.
If you play any Mario Kart in a casual way, luck can be a very determining factor, because all the weapons... the blue shell has been in every Mario Kart game except the SNES version, so, it's nothing new.
But if you really know how to play, weapons should not be a problem. Any good Mario Kart player can dodge blue shells, red shells, etc.
I can't wait for this game... just two more days =p
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 25th 2008 11:20AM
Same with SSBB... any gamer with experience can beat other casual player, even with all the weapons turned on and with Final Smashes.

If "brige game" means it has nothing in common with Double Dash whatsoever, count me in.
TheHuntIsOn @ Apr 25th 2008 11:28AM
Co, it's more like the DS version than Double Dash.
KeenCommander @ Apr 25th 2008 11:39AM
You mean the best game in the series DS version? Heck yes, that's great news! As long as there's no snaking (or otherwise cheating) that is, anyways. And no perverse icons.
D_Average @ Apr 25th 2008 11:53AM
Anyone know if the new version has "Mirror" mode after beating 150cc?
deaftly @ Apr 25th 2008 12:05PM
From what I've read about this Mario Kart, you're never going to beat 150cc just because of the cheap AI.
D_Average @ Apr 25th 2008 12:08PM
Even w/ cheap AI, I will still beat it, I'm "that good".
A Pissed-off English Gamer @ Apr 25th 2008 12:58PM
There certainly is a mirror mode unlocked after 150cc, and if you find 150cc infuriating for getting itemed up right at the end, then get ready to hate mirror mode for it with a passion. For some reason mirror mode seems even worse for it.
TheHuntIsOn @ Apr 25th 2008 11:21AM
Loves the game.
And yea it's quite easy on 50cc. Haven't tried any others yet, cept online and that wasn't too hard! It's well balanced. It was pretty much the first 30 minutes I had the game and ended up coming 3rd, 4th in races with 9 other people.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 25th 2008 11:25AM
HAIL THE DS VERSION FOREVER!
(and burn all of the snakers... AIN'T THAT RIGHT, FERNANDO?)

DS Version >> Wii Version
But only because of Baby Park: best track ever.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 25th 2008 11:35AM
Baby Park is an original Double Dash track.
Until now: Double Dash > DS and at the end, the 64 version.
Nigeria - MK: 0430-8491-9123 @ Apr 25th 2008 11:42AM
Keep forgetting that. I never had the Gamecube, and I never bothered to buy DD for the Wii.
I kinda suck at the Wii version. But believe me, I'm a beast at MKDS. I've been undefeated for six months...even though I haven't switched the game on in three months.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 25th 2008 11:43AM
Wanna play DS, Nigeria?
Noshino @ Apr 25th 2008 11:46AM
Nigeria,
DD is not exactly the same as the rest, the fact that you are good at MK DS doesn't necessarely mean that you are good on DD...
DD was by far the best one on the series, more depth, more excitement, more chaos...this and Mario Tennis were the best party games amongst my friends
Nigeria - MK: 0430-8491-9123 @ Apr 25th 2008 11:53AM
Fernando, I'll play you, when I get my cartridge of my cousin - if I get it back of my cousin. (I'm not backing down or nothing)
When I get it back I'll race you then. In the mean time, I await you in MKWii.
Markez @ Apr 25th 2008 11:33AM
DS version ruled, such so that I still jump online on occasion for wifi. Snaking is beyond lame, but still manage to find plenty of matches without it.
DK looks like he's going to absentmindedly drive into the stands in this picture...
Tom @ Apr 25th 2008 11:38AM
You know what's awesome? I can play "Mario Kart Arcade GP (Arcade)" anytime I want because it is at the Chuck E Cheese by my house. It is freaking amazing too just so you know.
KeenCommander @ Apr 25th 2008 11:42AM
I played that game once. It cost me a dollar and wasn't worth it at all. Heck, House of The Dead 4 was more worth a dollar a shot than Mario Kart Arcade GP - and I though that was outrageous.
samfish @ Apr 25th 2008 11:49AM
I'm too old to go into Chuck-E-Cheese. They literally tell me to GTFO. Probably think I'm a pedo or something.
I guess I need to have kids now. DAMNIT!
Tom @ Apr 25th 2008 11:56AM
Chuck E Cheese (by me) costs you 25 cents per play, maybe 50; totally worth it.

While I love the Mario Kart series and am looking forward to playing the latest installment, I cant say Im much of a fan of this retrospective. The "snarkiness" level was cranked up a bit too high, and instead of coming across as witty and insightful, it came across (at least to me) as bitter and resentful.
Grimes @ Apr 25th 2008 8:38PM
Hear, hear. Seriously, if of one of your intended audiences, the "bridge" gamer who hasn't played any of the earlier games, were to this retrospective as their sole source of info and impressions on the other games in the series, I think the negative tone of the copy would leave them with very little desire to explore any of the earlier games, except for Aracade GP.
A "rushed" feeling in 64? Wha?
Snotty and negative =/= smart, young man.
(and usually you're one of my favorite writers here)
TheHuntIsOn @ Apr 26th 2008 6:17AM
I dunno about that, I've tried playing the N64 version on the VC and it's just not the same. It's way to slippy and buggy by todays standards, even yesterdays standards.
Wii version is the best one. It's just the most fun all round, the wheel really adds to it. But hey that seems to be a running comment at the moment, "Wii wheel sucks" "Wii board sucks!"... when they've been getting good comments by the people who have actually used them!
alu @ Apr 25th 2008 3:08PM
still love the SNES version the most..
