No Nintendo Wii or DS price cuts this year
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told analysts today the company has no plans to cut the price of the Wii or DS this year. What, you're surprised? Reuters reports he stated the company's earnings projection didn't take a price cut into account and the continued demand for the company's products don't require one.
With demand outstripping supply on the Wii -- particularly in the North American market -- it's really no shock that Nintendo doesn't need a price cut on its hardware to keep stockholders happy. Nintendo expects to make $5.14 billion in fiscal year '09, which analysts believe is the company being conservative.

They don't need a price cut. That simple.
redneckvampire @ Apr 25th 2008 11:38AM
You mean they don't have to have a price cut to keep up sales. Like some other consoles I won't mention here.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 25th 2008 11:38AM
But I do want a black Wii... if they release a Wii in black color, I will give my current white console to my brother and buy the new version.
Black Wii with blue light would look amazing.
=p
Arttemis @ Apr 25th 2008 11:54AM
I would buy a black Wii the day they release it. Until then, I'll not ever bother - unless they dropped the price... but clearly that's never happening.
religiousjedi @ Apr 25th 2008 11:57AM
Color hunting: waste 'o money.
And you deprive a poor kid of his or her new Wii.
Shame on you...
Kenology @ Apr 25th 2008 12:28PM
I want a black Wii too.
SKI @ Apr 25th 2008 1:59PM
I wonder if the black Wii is any bigger? I'm actually serious because I think the new colors will have DVD-playback capabilities.
deaftly @ Apr 25th 2008 11:33AM
Duct tape prices must have went up.
Co @ Apr 25th 2008 11:37AM
ZZZZIIIINNNGGGG!!!!
Co @ Apr 25th 2008 11:38AM
And they have, actually.
religiousjedi @ Apr 25th 2008 11:48AM
Dammit! I needed some duct tape!
Oh well...guess I gotta peel it off me ol' Wii...
Markez @ Apr 25th 2008 11:59AM
Didn't know that bit was still funny.
SoulBlade @ Apr 25th 2008 12:04PM
God, I wish joystiq would implement a per user ignore system. Most comments of yours I read makes me dumber. I'd rather kill my brain cells by boozin or blazin.
Oh Markez - it's not.
Alex @ Apr 25th 2008 3:58PM
I used to think it was called 'Duck Tape', because a company called Duck used to make it.
DS OR Wii price cuts? Why not both?
Sora267 @ Apr 25th 2008 11:37AM
I better invest my $80 in Nintendo stock....

Uhhh duh...its not like its the ps3 or sony we're talking about here...with their overpriced pos and bad reputation....
Wheres the real news and/or juicy rumors...?
driven2sin @ Apr 25th 2008 11:51AM
they should raise the price
vgxtremist @ Apr 25th 2008 11:55AM
My mind is still with the Phattie...the Electric Blue one.
Ninjakamster @ Apr 25th 2008 11:56AM
:After price cut:
It prints less money? : (
Slayer @ Apr 25th 2008 11:57AM
The pricing is perfect where it is. Theres no need to change it.
Yourself @ Apr 25th 2008 12:01PM
Not that anyone was expecting it, but I would've been all over a DS Lite price cut. I'm still wielding my bulky grey launch DS because I can't justify buying a new one when that money could be better spent on 3 new DS games.
deaftly @ Apr 25th 2008 12:04PM
The brighter screens are worth the money alone
Ninjakamster @ Apr 25th 2008 12:06PM
deaftly is right, the screen difference on the fatty and lite is HUGE.
I think even that the Lite's lowest brightness setting is the same as the fat's highest.
343 Guilty Fart @ Apr 25th 2008 12:57PM
Does the phat even have brightness settings? I should know, but I don't want to bother to go check.
Yourself @ Apr 25th 2008 1:00PM
Yeah my dilemma is: do I want to replay my current games with a brighter screen, or do I want Phantom Hourglass and Ninja Gaiden? I was waiting for a relative lull in good DS games but apparently that's not coming, and now there are rumors of a new handheld so I'll hold off til E3. If E3 passes and no new DS announced, Cobalt & Black, here I come.
asurroca @ Apr 25th 2008 12:29PM
Screw price cuts... Just release a DS 2.0 (or whatever fanciful name Nintnedo dreams up). I want to spend my hard earned money on a new DS ASAP...preferably with a bigger screen, HDD, built-in Opera mobile browser, and hey, why not some of the gyro parts from the Wii ;)
FSK405K @ Apr 25th 2008 12:45PM
How about a price cut on The Orange Box? It was released in October, the games are on sale separately, and I...wait for it...finally played through Half-life 1 for the FIRST TIME this week. I'll buy it when it's no longer $50.
modified @ Apr 25th 2008 1:05PM
I don't think they will drop the price, but even if they are planning on doing so they wouldn't tell anyone ahead of time anyway.
Sietepestes @ Apr 25th 2008 1:07PM
We dont need a price dump on the wii... maybe on the DS... what the wii needs to do is BECOME AVAILABLE!!!
Jesus F'in Christ... I want my Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

They might not need a price cut, considering the profit per sale is a big part of their overal profit they shouldnt ,yet i wouldnt be suprised if they suddenly got "new plants"
Yeah im still wondering why they didnt release em in other colours, black would have been awsome and N probably chosed to save that as"sale boost" for later.
But still.I can tell ya,i would have gotten a Wii way back if it was in black, even at launch lol.Just got it for SSBB later lol and because i found a black case to change it.
Cesaria (SSBB: 3136-6466-5083) @ Apr 25th 2008 11:47PM
Can't wait to play this game!
gst @ Apr 26th 2008 12:26AM
I keep on wondering what Nintendo is doing with all of this money. At least in comparison to other gaming companies, they are making money hand over fist, and they produce some big ambitious projects that are surely big-budget, but not huge-budget, incredibly graphically detailed and over-produced stuff. They have made good money on silly mini-game collections and established franchises that, comparatively, I wouldn't expect it has cost them that much to make.
With that in mind, I am wondering how they are leveraged as a company and where the most money is going. I would think they would be buying up devs or developing a new game once a week or building a giant golden mario statue to worship...something. Or maybe the stockholders have been getting 100% dividend returns.
Mayhaps I am overestimating the levels of their profits but with a console that is relatively cheap to produce (hence, profitable on its own) and profitable franchises that sell like hotcakes, and handhelds that are becoming globally ubiquitous, there has to be a lot of profit on the bottom line.
