Rumor: Bungie making third-person Halo prequel
When Red Storm creative director Christian Allen (of Ghost Recon fame) joined Bungie last year, we speculated that he'd be working on a Halo-themed squad game. Lending further credence to our mutagenically induced prescience, EGM's Quartermann rumor column reports that Bungie's first game post-Microsoft will be a third-person Halo prequel "chronicling early skirmishes between the ODST troops and the Covenant" (read: no Master Chief). They're not sure if this is the same as Peter Jackson's mysterious Halo project, though it would appear that they're hiring a team specifically for that. EGM says that Microsoft will be ready to reveal all once the hype-train for Gears of War 2 has come to a halt.

i could get behind a third person halo game.
Cutty @ Apr 25th 2008 5:25PM
Agreed. Nice to see the Chief's back. =D
We're terrible.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 25th 2008 4:36PM
I'd be interested in a Halo prequel. The early skirmishes between the ODST and Covenant would probably be pretty fun to watch/play. Also it would be great to see all the spartans alive.
NukeAssault @ Apr 25th 2008 4:45PM
Ever heard of Halo Wars?
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 25th 2008 5:00PM
I have. Not interested. The only RTS I've ever liked was Warcraft.
Gehodra @ Apr 25th 2008 6:35PM
What about Starcraft?
Ignatius @ Apr 25th 2008 4:41PM
A Halo I might actually like.
And no more Master Chief.
Raikage (LDF CRAB BATTLE!!!) @ Apr 25th 2008 5:00PM
According to Vegnagun bwf, since he has probably read the books, you can look forward to many more MCs.
Enjoy:D
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 25th 2008 5:03PM
There's only one Master Chief, and he was alive during the time that I'm guessing this prequel would take place. If this prequel does happen, I guarantee a John-117 cameo.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 25th 2008 4:43PM
They need to add a LOT more to this than they did going from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3, otherwise it's just another freakin rehash and cash in of the halo name.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 25th 2008 5:20PM
Oh, so standardizing duel wield and rechargeable health in the industry isn't doing something?
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 25th 2008 5:24PM
Yeah that was nice in halo 1...back in 2001ish
And they didn't standardize dual wielding cause goldeneye did it before them (might be others too but that's the only one I could think of)
goboColossus @ Apr 25th 2008 6:24PM
GoldenEye had Dual Wielding, yes... But Halo 2 had independently controlled Dual Wielding, and Halo 3 further elaborated on their independence.
There's a difference between doing it first and setting the standard.
I only moderately like Halo btw, if it wasn't for the amazing original score and excellent story line / dialog it wouldn't have been worth my time. If this rumor is true, hopefully it will continue those two traditions :D
voodoo_craig @ Apr 25th 2008 4:46PM
Awesome! It's about time we got to kill some more Elites, I'm tired of all this Brute/Grunt malarkey!
Rususeruru @ Apr 25th 2008 6:43PM
I'm with this guy.
Ninjakamster @ Apr 25th 2008 4:53PM
Just curious, where is that pic from?
umm....hello??? @ Apr 25th 2008 4:57PM
from Neil Blomkempt's (sp?) series of Halo, live action shorts...
StrangeBum @ Apr 25th 2008 4:58PM
I believe that is from the Neil Blomkamp (not sure how to spell his name) Halo series that he made. It was just a few short videos of Marines during the time between Halo 2 and Halo 3. Pretty good stuff.
Rami @ Apr 25th 2008 4:58PM
^^^The pic is from the Halo live shorts released by Microsoft on XBL. Just google "live halo shorts" and you should find them. Basically they are a glimpse into what a live action halo movie will be like.
GreyFox @ Apr 25th 2008 5:12PM
All 3 answers are right technically. I just wish they would release the damn live action movie because that short is such a cock tease.
theturtle363 @ Apr 25th 2008 7:43PM
From the Neil Bloekamp shorts entitled "Arms race" i believe. As for the game it would be awesome to have a "Ghost Recon: ODST"
umm....hello??? @ Apr 25th 2008 4:58PM
yeah, I'd be all over another Halo game...I love the storylines from the books and the games. am working on collecting the comics...
Alex @ Apr 25th 2008 4:59PM
Is anybody else wanting some NEW games?
And am I the only one in the world who doesn't like GTA IV?
http://theramblingsofalex.blogspot.com/2008/04/gta-iv.html
That isn't spam, btw.
E.J. @ Apr 25th 2008 5:04PM

And saying it isn't spam is begging for someone to call you out.
Alex @ Apr 27th 2008 4:36PM
Sorry. I should have just copy/pasted the article.
Here:
Grand Theft Auto IV comes out on Tuesday the 29th. It seems like I am the only person in the whole world who really, really doesn't care. Thanks, but I think I'll stick with Condemned or Burnout...Xbox Live is going to be a very lonely place for the next few weeks until people get bored of GTA. *Sigh*...
Sorry, but I couldn't care less... And the main character looks like an angry Chuckle Brother...
The Sound @ Apr 25th 2008 5:02PM
I wish Bungie would work on something different. This would be their 5th Halo (named) game, and at this point, it's becoming, or is going to become stagnant.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 25th 2008 5:05PM
Bungie has only made 3 Halo games. Halo Wars developer is Ensemble.
samfish @ Apr 25th 2008 5:04PM
So it's looking like it's gonna be Gears/Halo/Gears/Halo/Gears/Halo every year now, 'eh?
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ Apr 25th 2008 5:15PM
Don't forget CoD...and probably RFOM.
PojoMofo @ Apr 25th 2008 5:10PM
Halo: Cash cow edition
Tim The Enchanter @ Apr 25th 2008 5:12PM
*joy-gasm!*
RudyHuxtable @ Apr 25th 2008 5:21PM
The one thing I can say that would be nice would be to abandon, or at least "update" the Halo look. Since this is not QUITE Halo but still is halo, it'll need some of the same art direction, but it's a chance to make it look more natural and less cartoonish/gamey. I would like to see a more Gears of War/Call of Duty type of realism in the graphics this time around. That would be a nice change.
As for a touch of Rainbow Six, that's cool, too.
Co @ Apr 25th 2008 6:22PM
"I would like to see a more Gears of War/Call of Duty type of realism in the graphics this time around."
Yea because there's certainly not enough next-gen games adopting that sort of look as it is.
/sarcasm for sho
RudyHuxtable @ Apr 25th 2008 6:24PM
Well, if not more realistic, then I want Halo Pinata. Where I can have a garden to grow my own grunts and Elites, but I gotta feed em gems from a gem tree.
Hyams @ Apr 25th 2008 7:37PM
You want them to add more brown?
RudyHuxtable @ Apr 25th 2008 7:41PM
No. I would like them to add more cowbell. I gotta have more cowbell.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 25th 2008 8:20PM
I know what you are saying abandon the matel look and stop throwing lights at peoples faces.
If you ask me the way the camera moves in halo is awkward and the multiplayer maps are pretty meh.
chispito @ Apr 25th 2008 5:22PM
If Gears 2 is as good as the first, I'm not entirely sure the hype train will come to much of a halt.
Arteen @ Apr 25th 2008 5:31PM
If it's anything like the pre-Xbox versions of Halo, them I'm all for it. The pre-Xbox Halo looked like it would make for a very fun game.
Jeff @ Apr 25th 2008 5:47PM
The vision they originally had for Halo looked pretty fucking awesome. Hopefully this will play more along those lines.
Sun-Wukong @ Apr 25th 2008 6:33PM
Oh joy. Another squad-based shooter.
rruss79 @ Apr 25th 2008 6:38PM
The original Halo was a RTS so I am thinking you guys are looking for that game. The one mentioned in the rumor is more along of the lines of Ghost Recon with power ranger *cough* I mean Spartans
StuScotsLazyEye @ Apr 25th 2008 6:58PM
RTS? No no no...Halo was originally a third person adventure game that transitioned from third to first person perspectives based on what weapons you were holding and certain situations. It was planned (and was going to be) much MUCH better than what the trilogy of video games has brought to the world (nothing).
Oh Halo, what you once were... *sniff*
PS: I still have the PC Gamer from 1998/1999 that showcases Halo from it's earliest stages. Believe me, it was epic.
Einhanderkiller @ Apr 25th 2008 6:53PM
I (generally) hate third-person shooters.
SoulBlade @ Apr 25th 2008 7:43PM
When devs find a franchise that sells like hotcakes, they milk it for everything its got. Look at Mario, Zelda, Megaman, etc. I'm not saying Halo will be as bad as them in terms of milking it... at least not yet... but there's definitely a lot more Halo to come after this.
SharpBlade @ Apr 25th 2008 8:13PM
When is it coming to the PC? No need to put this under the 360 section only.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 25th 2008 8:24PM
Hey it's Halo :D
I'm not falling for that one again.Rot in hell Bungie.
M @ Apr 25th 2008 8:34PM
I want to be happy about these, love TPSs and Halo, and a good team can make a good game.
But ...
What about Master Chief?...No master chief.
StarKiller @ Apr 25th 2008 8:44PM
This game will do well in sells but poorly with gamers, you do not play as Spartans but as normal soldiers. In my opinion normals humans in the Haloverse seem to be pointless, and as far as the games went they were on the special side.
F1 @ Apr 25th 2008 10:44PM
Must... Buy... Game...
Need... More... Halo...
Hoping... for... more... advertising... on... Mountain... Dew...
